Default Washington Times Ranks The Broncos 23 Outta 32

23. Denver Broncos

Coach: Josh McDaniels (first season)

Last year: 8-8 (lost last three games to miss playoffs – Mike Shanahan was fired).

NFL rankings: Offense – second in yards and 16th in points; Defense – 29th in yards, 30th in points.

Additions: As of this week, there are 38 new faces on the roster, including QB Kyle Orton, WR Jabar Gaffney, CB Renaldo Hill, S Brian Dawkins, RB Correll Buckhalter, RB LaMont Jordan, CB Andre Goodman, LB Nick Griesen and five first- or second-round draft picks – RB Knowshon Moreno, LB Robert Ayres, CB Alphonso Smith, CB Darcel McBath and TE Richard Quinn.

Subtractions: More than 20 players, including QB Jay Cutler, C Tom Nalen, CB Dre Bly, DE Ebenezer Dkuban, RB Tatum Bell, RB Michael Pittman, S Marquand Manuel, DT Dewayne Robertson.

Fantasy pick: WR Brandon Marshall. He could be traded before opening day but he caught 104 passes for 1,265 yards and six touchdowns. He’s a reception machine so put him down for at least 90 catches.

Outlook: It is hard to find a team that’s undergone more changes than the previously-cohesive Broncos. Shanahan’s firing was a shocker, followed by McDaniels’ decision to deal Cutler to Chicago. With Orton, the Broncos should be able to score points – Marshall/Royal are a solid combo and Moreno should be able to fit right in. Defense will be an issue. New coordinator Mike Nolan is switching to a 3-4 alignment and as many as three rookies could start. The pressure is on veterans Dawkins and Champ Bailey to get the kids caught up to speed. The Broncos couldn’t stop the run (27th) or the pass (25th) and couldn’t get to the quarterback (26th) or intercept passes (31st). For all the changes, it’s likely the Broncos will take a step back this year – even in the AFC West -- before taking a couple steps forward with the draft picks acquired for Cutler.

Projected starters

Offense: QB Kyle Orton, FB Peyton Hillis, RB Knowshon Moreno, WR Brandon Marshall, WR Eddie Royal, TE Daniel Graham, LT Ryan Clady, LG Ben Hamilton, C Casey Wiegmann, RG Chris Kuper, RT Ryan Harris.

Defense: LE Tim Crowder, DT Marcus Thomas, RE Robert Ayres, OLB Louis Green, ILB D.J. Williams, ILB Andra Davis, OLB Elvis Dumervil, CB Champ Bailey, RB Josh Bell, SS Darcel McBath, FS Brian Dawkins.

Specialists: K Matt Prater, P Brett Kern, KR/PR Eddie Royal.

Projected record: 6-10 (second in the AFC West). The Broncos should start fast (first three games are against Cincinnati, Cleveland and Oakland) but check out their next eight games: Dallas, New England, at San Diego, at Baltimore, Pittsburgh, at Washington, San Diego, New York Giants. The Broncos will be better than their record but a schedule that also included December road trips to Indianapolis and Philadelphia will be too much to overcome.

What a strange starting defense they have for us. One guy we cut, he seems to have forgotten about andre goodman, and a curious take on our D-line.

He pretty much whiffed on the projected starters on D, particularly on the line.

Aside from that it's a pretty fair assesment to be honest.

Agree, it's not that far off. It's obviously going to come down to Orton on offense, but the other starting 10 and backups that will see a ton of time (Scheffler, Stokley, and Gaffney) are better than what at least 75% of the league can put out there.

On defense it'll depend on how quickly the new staff can make impact, if any, with what's there.

I find this season so difficult to predict.

If Orton catches on to the system at a reasonable pace and Moreno plays to the sort of level you'd expect a # 10-15 overall RB pick to play at (Jonathan Stewart and Marshawn Lynch are two guys in recent years picked at a similiar spot) then there's no reason whatsoever that we shouldn't still have one of the better offenses in the league.

If that happens, we won't need a really top defense to be competitive. Just a D that can make a play now and again. With improved coaching and some better players in the secondary, that's not an impossible thing to achieve.

On the other hand, there could be teething problems with the system on O and the D could suck again.

I don't understand the projected defensive starters, but I'm not complaining about the #23 ranking.

They also forgot Renaldo Hill. The Washington Times usefulness ends with politics if you're a conservative (or a liberal looking for a different view).

We're really screwed if we're starting a RB opposite Champ at corner...

We were basically a 7-9 team last year. So, considering we're having to rebuild a horrible defense and we're installing a new offensive system, 23rd isn't a surprising ranking.

I do think by season's end, we'll be seen stronger than that, though.

Completely random side-note, I don't think Crowder will wind up a starter at LB. I think Ayers will probably wind up listed as an OLB starter, but will play a lot of DE, as well.

I hope Crowder surprises me, though. Again, what a huge boost if we can salvage anything out of Moss/Crowder/Powell.

I holding out hope that our DL could feature Powell/Reid/Thomas. I don't like the idea of Thomas as a NT, but then again... we haven't seen anything from these guys, yet. Who knows, maybe he could bulk up and do very well there.

Honest to God, at the end of the season pre Shanny and pre Cutler drama and thinking at that time that Slowick would return, combined with the projected schedule that was out...I gave us 6 wins as it was with the ****ty defense we were sure to see rolled out.

I just don't get why people are so upset with the idea of going 6 - 10 with the status quo.

Is it because it feels better to have a cannon-armed QB leading the 6 - 10 team versus a viable option at starter that will do just fine, sans the "holy **** how did that throw make it in there/not get picked off?" moments?

This year will be about how I thought it would after the schedule came out and before the drama, the thing I am excited about honestly is watching the team grow as the season goes along and the improvement in 2010. You never know, this team might surprise some people too, but I am optimistic and excited so what do I know.

All I know is, we weren't world beaters at the last whistle of the last game, and our defense would about have to try and be as bad as it was last year.

Phenomenal post.

Dead on the money about the QB position, too. Some people just can't see beyond it. There is a troop of posters here who were MISERABLE when we were playing in an AFCCG with Plummer, but were thrilled going .500, missing playoffs with Quitler.

I say... who cares?

Get a QB in there who can do his job and build a complete team around him. We don't need John Elway to win another SB. But, some people just can't see beyond the QB position. Yes, it's crucial... but it's one position.

You're not wrong to be optimistic and excited, and don't let the widows around here convince you that you are.

Well by all accounts we have upgraded our coaching staff (all but HC) and brought in more talent for the most part (not at the QB position and believing we keep Marshall) SO by thinking we will still go 6-10 with a much more improved team over a ****ty team we all thought would go 6-10 with that joke of a DC would in-fact really be a epic failure.

so other than the cutler thing, you agree this offseason has been great. now, realize that mcd did not order the cutler trade, pat bowlen did. the only reason pat bowlen did is because cutlers immaturity and personality forced the broncos to trade him, they did not WANT to trade him. if they did, mcd wouldnt have had to go on national tv and say he wants to talk to the QB, seeing as that is the only way he coudl have gotten a hold of cutler since cutler wouldnt answer phone calls or text messages from the team, much less talk to them without bus cook in the room.

I thought about that also but I believe our offense will be fine, that isn't my worry (assuming BM stays)

the D will also be fine IMO with better players and a coach that understands defense and how not to give 10 yard cushions, it is the new system and staff that makes me think it will take at least a season to get up to speed

not to mention we really do have a ****er of a schedule this year
