McDaniels in no hurry to name No. 1 QB

The Denver Post
Posted: 06/13/2009 01:00:00 AM MDT

.................................................. ......

In reality, McDaniels seems in no rush to name a leader in the quest to replace Jay Cutler.

Orton and Simms each took repetitions with the first-team offense Friday, though it was Orton who took the first snaps in 11-on-11 drills.

"I haven't worried about it. I figure if I get better every day and improve, I'll be the guy when it comes time to play," Orton said.

Coaches have installed "just about everything," leaving McDaniels hopeful that the worst practices might be behind them.

"We're kind of at the tip of iceberg, so everything else, hopefully, will get better, and we'll streamline it to training camp these next two days here," McDaniels said. "I couldn't ask any more from two guys in terms of what they're putting in off the field and in the meeting room. They're working very hard and competing with each other, so I think they're making each other better, and that's making the Broncos better."

New-look linebackers.

Converted defensive end Tim Crowder and rookie Robert Ayers were the outside linebackers with the first-team base defense throughout Friday's practice.
Crowder on run downs (if he can really play this year) and Doom in on 3rd down with Ayers on the other side has some possibilities ...

Will be interesting to see if Crowder can blossom as an OLB. That's one of the fun parts of all these changes as well some guys are going to step up either from having enough growing time in the league and/or being put in a position that fits them better and their skills. There are sure to be at least a few surprises come September with all this turn over.

That left Elvis Dumervil and Darrell Reid playing on the second unit.

"It's really not a first-team, second-team or whatever, it's just putting guys up and seeing who they fit with the best," Crowder said. "We'll see when the pads come on. This is sandlot football right now. When the pads come on, that's when the real football starts, and that's when the depth chart and all that stuff will figure itself out."

(good advice for the Nervous Nellys who are hand -wringing so early over who's going to start where.)

Footnotes.

Starting right guard Chris Kuper was excused from practice Friday to get married. "He might be nervous, but he's not holding out," McDaniels joked. . . . Running back Ryan Torain participated in the full practice wearing a brace on his left knee and an orange jersey. Torain, who had surgery to repair a torn ACL last November, participated in individual drills. . . . Linebackers Wesley Woodyard and Boss Bailey and wide receiver David Grimes were held out of practice because of injuries. . . . The team signed center Blake Schlueter, selected in the seventh round (225th overall) from TCU.

Surprised to see Crowder getting any ink at all.

To me, that guy even sticking as a back-up is a major victory, at this point.
Same for Moss. If they're not total wash-outs, that's a big win for us.

Can't wait to see Powell get some reps. Haven't heard much about him thus far.

Yep, me too, am curious how he will do, but we're not going to have any clue really on the D-line until the pads come on. Like Crowder said, its mostly sandlot at the moment and coaches just mixing and matching guys and see which combination click.

But I agree, seeing Crowder running with the ones now is interesting and perhaps indicates we may yet get some good value from those picks a few years ago after all .. we'll see. He has shown flashes of being able to play and maybe the OLB spot is a better niche for him at this level than a pure 4-3 DE?

Even converting a handful of these guys who were considered former busts into solid players now would be a big plus for this team.

I really do think their struggles were the result of horrible coaching all the way from their DL coach to friggin Slowik.

Both these guys have worlds of talent and now with proper coaching, I think they'll come around.

When the options are Orton and Simms, who would be in a hurry to anoint a #1?

i find it ironic that this comment came from a guy that couldn't find a uniform on game day last year despite being behind some historically poor competition . . . let's hope his potential finally becomes potent

All McDaniels said was that the competition was making them both better, not taht he wasn't going to name a starter.

No no, he said more than that: "We're kind of at the tip of iceberg, so everything else, hopefully, will get better, and we'll streamline it to training camp these next two days here," McDaniels said.

And too, the headline of the story, "McDaniels in no hurry to name starting quarterback," while presumably not a direct quote, was undoubtedly prompted in part by the context of the interview/discussion.

Exactly, I really can't see why people are getting upset that he named a starter!

Its not like the competition is over just because he named a starter!

I mean geeze! Crowder is also technically a starter at this point! And I'm going to go out on a limb and say that his posistion as starting OLB is still open to competition!

I took that quote as in how the players are digesting the offensive system. McDaniels just threw the brunt of his complex system at the players and now he's hoping to really emphasize what he's really gonna use when camp starts. I think that's just part of the process when everyone on the team is brand new to the playbook. It's the way I read it anyway.

And the second part... you know reporters jump to conclusions without facts and sensationalize headlines all the time. I'm willing to bet she wrote the story basing off a question or two she asked rather then an entire sit down interview.
