Computers are banned and an empire rules over everything. Human computers develop secretly. Interstellar travel is possible through a miracle substance called spice which is essentially giant sand worm poop found only on Arrakis. The empire controls this planet because of the resource. The Freman tribe, native to Arrakis are waiting for a messiah to rise up and save them from the empire. He does by harnessing the power of spice uniting the tribes to defeat the empire. That's what the movie is about.

No, I did not get it either.

If you watched it and came away with what I explained on your own, I think they immediately accept you to MIT.

It was a stupid ass flick. It had no plot worth speaking of and had horrible segues into anything else. One minute they are on a flying ship to check out a spice miner, next a fat man is raping a dude after tearing out a heart plug. The only saving grace was Patrick Stewart and he is in 3 scenes.

Reception
In his review, critic Roger Ebert gave Dune one star out of four and wrote "This movie is a real mess, an incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of all time."[9] Ebert added that "The movie's plot will no doubt mean more to people who've read Herbert than to those who are walking in cold," and later named it "the worst movie of the year."[10] On At The Movies with Gene Siskel and Ebert, Siskel began his review by saying "it's physically ugly, it contains at least a dozen gory gross-out scenes, some of its special effects are cheap — surprisingly cheap because this film cost a reported 40 to 45 million dollars — and its story is confusing beyond belief. In case I haven't made myself clear, I hated watching this film."[11] The film was later listed as the worst film of 1984 in their "Stinkers of 1984" episode.[12] Other negative reviews focused on the same issues as well as on the length of the film.[13]

Janet Maslin of The New York Times also gave Dune a negative review of one star out of five. She said that, "Several of the characters in Dune are psychic, which puts them in the unique position of being able to understand what goes on in the movie" and explained that the plot was "perilously overloaded, as is virtually everything else about it."

Dune is one of my favorite novels of all time, I highly recommend reading it.

It was a dumb idea to ever try to make a movie out of it.

Watch the Sci-Fi Channel remake. It's both more faithful to the book and better made. And it has a great soundtrack.

The sequel, Children of Dune, is also fantastic. Also made by Sci-Fi Channel.

The guy who plays Paul is one of my favorite actors.

Really? Made-for sci-fi isn't exactly a gold standard (beyond BSG).

I didn't say it was. But they nailed Dune. Maybe the special effects weren't perfect but everything else was, IMO. They certainly didn't have any ****ing "weirding modules."

Yeah. He comes out of a squealing steam bath in a blue diaper and his uncle gives him "the eyes"...****ing sick. When I thought I got a handle on what was happening, things would change. Bald women and men with a scorching case of herpes. Its like HS all over...

Read the books. Absolutely pointless to watch the movie if you never read the books. Movie will never make any sense to you.

The books are freakin fantastic.

Extremely dumb.

There are too many factions that need too much explaining to put into any two hour movie.

The Bene Tlielax, Bene Gesserit, Mentats, Fremen, Sardaukar, Great Houses, Ix, Lansraad, Guild, the backstory of Atreides and Harkonnen fued, way too much for a movie.

If you like epic sci-fi though, the novels are among the best out there. Its the future version of Lord of the Rings in its complexity, scope, and language.

The first three are good. I particularly love Children of Dune. Paul coming back as The Prophet is such a ****ing cool storyline.

I couldn't get halfway into the fourth. Frank started smoking herb or something.

I read the books. I absolutely love Frank Herbert's writing, and love the Dune series.

The movie sucked donkey balls. Absolutely terrible. The movie even changed the story. It never did rain at the end of the first book.

The last three are difficult to read and there's not much payoff, but if you're a fan you owe it to yourself to finish them.

Don't bother reading the more recent novels written by Herbert's kid and Kevin Anderson. He might as well have taken a giant deuce on his father's grave.
