Default McDaniels big hit at Fan Fair event

Josh McDaniels spotted him from 50 feet away. Well, so did everyone else, for that matter. You don't show up at the Broncos' annual Fan Fair in head-to-toe Chiefs garb and not get noticed.

So when Doug Beneke arrived Saturday at the table in search of an autograph, McDaniels was ready and waiting, Sharpie in hand and smirk on his face.

"Go Broncos! Beat the Chiefs! Josh McDaniels," the autograph read.

And Beneke, who drove in from Salina, Kan., with his Broncos fan wife, couldn't have been happier.

"It's what it's all about," Beneke said. "We're just having fun. I was going to ask him about Matt Cassel, but I didn't have time."

Cassel might have been the Broncos' quarterback if the Jay Cutler trade talks hadn't blown up in McDaniels' face. But this wasn't a time for questions about quarterbacks, not on a bright, sunny day in June. This was all about meeting and greeting. It was about min-gling with fans, many of whom had never known a Broncos coach not named Mike Shanahan.

For McDaniels, the event, which drew a crowd of 5,900, marked a first in the infancy of his career in Denver. An NFL head coach has to wear many hats: disciplinarian, personnel evaluator and keeper of the X's and O's, just to name a few. On this day, when McDan-iels made his first-ever public appearance as the Broncos' coach, he was the face of the franchise.

And let the record show he had a blast.

"This is their first opportunity and my first opportunity to be out there with them," McDaniels said. "All the hats you have to wear, those are things that, as a head coach, you look forward to. I'm telling you, there's been nothing I've done since I've been here that I didn't enjoy, including today.

"This is great. I'm a football coach. I didn't save the world or anything. But these people are excited and eager to get an autograph from me. We're all fortunate to have this opportunity to work in a business and an environment where people really want to be around you. I don't know what else I'd want to do."

McDaniels signed more than 1,000 autographs. Nothing unusual there except that, before all those lines converged on him at Invesco Field at Mile High, he hadn't signed that many in his entire NFL career.

"No doubt about it, that's way more," he said. "The only time I've ever signed autographs was at training camp in New England for a couple of days, and at the Super Bowl, where you've got to sign all those footballs for everybody."

McDaniels, who turned 33 in April, didn't just sign. He worked the crowd, posing for pictures and engaging in conversations with fans. Take the woman who reminded him to drink some water to stay hydrated in the heat. Said McDaniels, "It took me a couple of migraines to catch on."

Or the woman who challenged him to get the franchise back on its feet after three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance. "Are you going to be a good coach?" the woman asked. "Are you going to be a good fan?" responded McDaniels.

"Yes," the woman said.

"Good," McDaniels said. "I'll be a good coach, you be a good fan, and we'll have a happy ending."

Everyone was happy on this day. And why not? McDaniels has yet to lose a game or light up the talk-show phone lines after a bad call on Sunday. He has, however, created a controversy, the likes of which had never been witnessed in Broncos Nation. For the record, he's well-aware many fans are viewing him with skepticism after he traded Cutler during his first few weeks on the job.

"I think the fans are a little uncertain about what they're going to see, but that's the fun of this time of year," McDaniels said. "I'm not a bad guy, I'm a nice guy. Hopefully, they will get to know my personality and how I interact with them and the players and with you people (the media). I know that's a big part of this game, being able to send fans the proper message, telling them what you're all about.

"Hopefully, the more they get to see me and the more I'm out there being able to shake hands and sign autographs, they'll get the right sense of what I'm all about."

Montrose sent me a text yesterday and said he was able to talk with McD. I gave him a buzz and asked to what extent. They were able to talk about their old college football days and what not. Sounds like a really engaging and likable head coach. I think what makes me the most happy at this point is the fact that he is opening up to the media finally. Apa will attest to this, my biggest frustration during the Cutler fiasco was McD's inability to understand the importance of having the local media in his corner, and by shunning them out and granting the national media the only access, he was only making his life more difficult in Denver. Looks like he figured that out.

a VERY pompous response---how about "I'll do my best to restore the luster to the Denver Broncos Organization" or " I can't promise 16-0, but we will fight for every yard this season"....Hopefully his arrogance translates into more W's than L's this year..........

I didn't read it that way. I'm sure he was trying to be funny/coy. Tone matters here and we really don't have insight into it given that it's written.

Tjesus, easy now ... lighten up there Bf7, don't read too much into a partial quote from a fan day fair!

McD was just playing off what the lady said in a lighthearted manner. He wasn't being 'serious' as if challenging her to be a good fan and then he'll be a good coach for Pete's sake! Nor was he looking down on or be-belittling her at all. It was simply a good-natured retort in the moment to her comment and I'm sure she took it that was as well .

Yeah, kind of. Not only that but she made the effort to show up to this event and even with that in mind he's still going to challenge her? And speaking of which, like you said, he should be earning their support and not asking for it upfront before he is willing to acknowledge he is going to be a good coach. WTH.

Are you ****ing crybabies for real? The guy was joking around with the fans and followed it up with a very humble statement that the team would simply try their best.

Honestly, you ****ers are embarrassing. Just a bunch of bitter old ladies looking for mole-hills to turn into mountains.

Love it!

If Shanny said it all the nut huggers would be drop'n to their knees. But again when a person has a beef with an individual, the person looks hard to find a reason to find fault.

Jesus ****ing christ!!!!! Give me a break man you can't go taking a lighthearted 5 second meeting with a fan this serious.

By all accounts dude was smiling having a good time with the fans. Honestly you are just grasping at straws trying to find things you can not like the guy over.

Give it up and get excited about Broncos football. We are fans not a bunch of pussies with a hidden agenda because you are mad at the new coach.

Support the coach = supporting the team

It's tht simple. Until the guy proves otherwise he doesn't deserve all the nitpicking.

wow...

way to disregard all the obvious positive from that entire experience, and instead try and find a sliver of reaction, that if spun correctly, could come off as negative...

stop trying to find ways to hate the guy...you're embarrassing yourself...

I see it more like until he loses a bunch of games for us he is undefeated.

I would be more worried if Broncos weren't total crap the last 3 yrs. Shanny had us all broken in, we are like a new pair of shoes for the new guy.

Hopefully he wins some early because you can already see how many people ready to label him a loser and call for his firing.

Wow...that's unreasonable optimism.

He has struck out on nearly every at bat leading into the season. I'm not sure where the line between optimism and stupidity is blurred regarding this guy. We all hope that he does well, but he has do first prove that he can do anything well.
