Default Little breathing room in Broncos' bloated backfield

By Dan Parr
May 22, 2009

In a crowded field of Broncos’ running backs, which runs eight deep when counting RB-FB Peyton Hillis, the only thing that seems certain is rookie Knowshon Moreno will make the roster and at least a few of his colleagues at the position will not. Third-year veteran Darius Walker, injury-prone second-year player Ryan Torain and undrafted free agent Kestahn Moore are long shots to make the team and could end up on the practice squad, but that still leaves the club with five ballcarriers. Sources say the next most likely victim of a roster paring would be LaMont Jordan, who isn’t a special-teams contributor, unless head coach Josh McDaniels decides Hillis doesn’t fit in his scheme. Jordan played in McDaniels’ offense last season in New England and was signed early in the free-agent signing period this offseason. However, in the RB pecking order he’s behind Moreno, Correll Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington and perhaps the versatile Hillis and could be used sparingly if he survives the cutdowns. The Broncos likely will keep all of their backs through training camp in case injuries sap their depth, as was the case last season.

5 RB's sounds right to start the season. Hillis, Moreno, Buck, Arrington, Jordan/Walker. Torain to PUP possibly, I'm not clear on the PUP rules. If not he'll probably be the 5th.

just get off the Torain bus now, because he is good as gone, just a matter of when.

Well, they have to keep him until he's healed, or make an injury settlement, or put him on PUP that's how I understand the rules. 'Good as gone' pretty much covers all that.

I disagree. The kid has alot of talent, he's just been a little snake bitten over the last year. If he can stay healthy, he'd be a great weapon for us.

Torain has an ACL. He's on PUP, Hillis will probably be traded for the TE heavy McDummy offense.

Hillis stays...

If he's gone, blame it "on those meddlin' kids" or "Old Man Withers"...

Drafting Quinn means either Scheff or Hillis are gone. Why we needed a 2nd round blocking 'TE when we have 1 paid 10 million is anyones guess.

Graham certainly is not the seam breaker nor is Quinn.

And why do you think hillis stays? Probably more because Mcdummy will be scared to go to his car than anything.

I think Quinn was selected because the Broncos don't plan on paying Graham what he makes right now. Quinn will be leverage when that time comes.

Or if Quinn performs really well Graham could be gone sooner then you think.

Or Mcdaniels may not want Scheffler around.

I really don't see a connection with Hillis though.

I think Hillis proves he is healthy, powerful, ready to bust heads, he get's the 3rd RB spot behind Moreno and Buck. Hillis would be the short yardage guy, then I see arrington more the 3rd down guy. But if Moreno shows he can catch really well arrington IMO would go before Jordan.

My thinking is that Mcdaniels will feel big backs get banged up, and he might want both Jordan and Hillis available.

No doubt Broncos can throw a really big team out.

2 TE Quinn and Graham, with Marshal at one wr, royal at the other, and Hillis as a single back could pose some problems.

You can pound with 2 big blocking TE and a huge steamrolling RB, or go max protect and try and send Royal deep.

Marshall, quinn, Graham, Hillis all very physical players and could pose matchup problems for teams with smaller LBERS and Dbacks.

Fine...we use the 3 TE/4RB set.,

Why even bring Marshall or Royal onthe field?

Things might be prety cheerfull if we beat da bears and go 3-0 in sept....

I see 1-7 for the midseason.

Considering McDaniels acknowledgment of both the Broncos and Pats RB troubles last year, and his statement that "you can't have enough backs," I think we'll keep five with Hillis doubling as a FB (Knowshon, Buck, JJ, Jordan and Hillis). I figure Torain could be headed to the PuP list if his ACL isn't recovered, or snuck onto the practice squad, if they don't just cut him all together.

After last season's experience, are five RBs enough?

How about this: Quinn was drafted to help improve the red zone and short yardage sitches (clearly a problem area), where he can bookend w/Graham.

And oh yeah... Moreno will help there too. Like the kid's desire/drive.

It's a move-the-chains thing.

How is that when he'd be on the bench?

I agree, unless this rotation of running backs nonsense starts to catch on in the NFL then I don't see Torain having any chance to get carries, even should he stay healthy.

All the talent in the world does zero good if he can't stay on the field. PUP or cut out right.

With the way Bronco RB's went down last year, there's nothing wrong at all having many RB's in camp.

Quinn was brought in to help the running game and to possibly replace Graham in a year or so. Believing Quinn has any effect on Hillis' playing time or roster spot is stretching things to say the least.

the guy has been nicked up since college. there is a point where injuries aren't just some fluke occurance and become a guy just not built to handle the beatings of the NFL. and i don't think Torain can, he has talent but not the body to do anything with it.

Not if they're going to a one back system it's not. Hllis would be the perfect complement to Moreno as a power back who can slide into an H-back spot and catch the ball. With Quinn in the lineup that won't happen.

Keep in mind that both Correll Buckhalter and JJ Arrington received $1.8 million signing bonuses while LaMont Jordan received a $500k signing bonus.

He suffered two injuries in college, and then the broken elbow and torn ACL last year. None of his injuries were related, nor have they been recurring. All of the injuries now have completely healed except for his ACL.

He might start the year on PUP, but I find it extremely doubtful that he's not given another chance this year with the talent he has and the low cost rookie contract he's on.

Well there has only been one year that he didn't miss time. Some guys have a knack for getting hurt and this guy is one of them.
