Default Draft Grades from multiple sources

Before it goes to far, let me say this article http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/...-draft-grades/ pretty much sums up my opinion on early draft grades, they are meaningless and devoid of any useful information. They do however serve as a measure of public opinion about the team, which is why I am interested in them. As a bonus the links http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=538191 and http://www.boston.com/sports/footbal...r_class_of_06/ focus on the 2006 draft and have some nice little blurbs about our Broncos.

Now on to the grades -

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=542934 A-

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9501382 B (The second most positive of all of the grades, some good bits about McKinley)

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/footb...t-grades_N.htm B-

http://challengegames.nfl.com/fanballot B- (Fan poll on NFL.com)

http://draftdaddy.com/teams/DEN.htm (breaks it down by individual player averages to a low B, but is very positive on several picks, also lists all UDFA acquisitions but does not grade them.)

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/sports...ory?id=4100979 C

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09...s&confirm=true C

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...2-teams/page/6 C-

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/story/11683687 D

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_yl...yhoo&type=lgns D

Several of those links have the Raiders at an F.

Denver Broncos: D
Without Mike Shanahan's magic touch for finding late-round running backs or a certain franchise quarterback in which to build their offense around, the Broncos shifted their attention to a new star runner with Knowshon Moreno in the first round. Selecting pass rusher Robert Ayers a few picks later gave the team a rush linebacker to build their 3-4 defense around. From there, however, a series of solid defensive backs (Alphonso Smith, Darcel McBath, David Bruton) was lost a bit in a shuffle of trades with Seattle that essentially gave the Broncos third- and fourth-round picks in a weak 2009 draft for a first-round pick in next year's draft. The decision is one of several in a mystifying offseason in Denver.

Link? I was not at all trying to selectively pick here and would love to edit it into the original post. I personally think this draft may turn out very well. Not at all happy about the lack off D-line help, but the picks we did get look good. I would give it a strong B at this point without an eye toward areas of need, and I have a suspicion that it will go to an A after a year or three seeing these guys on the field.

I can't find a link to it, but the magazine gave draft grades a few weeks ago. They didn't give a description about every player but here is what they wrote about our draft.
They gave...

Knowshon... A
Ayers... A.... Robert Ayers has an explosive first step and is very aggressive to the ball; he could play a stand-up outside linebacker or as a defensive end to pressure opposing QBs.
Alphonso Smith... A+
McBath... B+
Quinn... C
Bruton... C
Seth Olsen... C-
Kenny McKinley... B-
Tom Brandstater... C+... There's no doubting QB Tom Brandstater's mental acumen. His height and arm strength are solid, too. The Broncos' goals are to smooth out his mechanics and improve his footwork.
Blake Schluetler... B-

The only other teams they gave an "A" to was the Jets and the Eagles.

Solid additional information, thanks. I couldn't find a link to it either, there are just too many damned blogs with draft grades on them.

Considering we spent THREE FIRST ROUNDERS, shouldn't we get a good grade unless we make a really dumb mistake, like trading our own '10 first that likely will be around 10 considering our schedule?

WTF?

The way I am looking at this is that we need an increased number of starters/solid contributors for it to be considered a good draft. In a normal draft year one or two starters and one or two rotational contributors is generally considered good. With the number of draft picks we had, and the trades we made to get more and move up for targeted players, it has raised my expectations. I would consider two starters and two or three rotational guys to be a succesful draft in this case. With Moreno, Ayers, and Smith I see this as a strong possibility. Additionally any draft where you get a superstar could be considered succesful. If Moreno turns into the next LT/Peterson it would be very difficult to argue this as an unsuccesful draft.

Yeah, I got that response on the Post-draft power rankings too. Can you look up last years to provide some contrast here? I tried in the Post draft but only got one source that had adequate archives. If you don't I will try and get some of last years grades, but it might take a bit. Thanks.

WTF?
Seriously take a step back and look at this trade. We took a CB who as of right now would be the #1 CB in next years draft. But since the draft is horribly thin at CB next year lets say he goes in the 18-25 range. So we just saved our selves a ton of money. Speaking of money have you seen champs numbers for next year? I will promise you we wont pay him. he will either re-structure or he will get cut. which makes CB our biggest need. Could we have waited and tried to re-structure champ or go after a FA? sure but why if we could get a guy the coaching staff loves at a fraction of the price. So esentially we got next years first for a second round price tag. Now if he busts we are hosed but I can see why they made the move. and my guess is our pick is around 15 or so. I think we go 8-8 or 9-7 at best. or schedual is rough but not all of thoes teams that were good last season will remain at that level.

Rob Rang's analysis apparently got lost in the shuffle as well--our first round pick next year to Seattle for a third and fourth this year? I don't think so.

How about our first round pick next year to Seattle for their second round pick this year. And with Pittsburgh we traded our two third round picks this year for their second and fouth round picks this year.

The only think Mystifying here is the numb-scullery of the writer that thinks we gave up our next years 1st to Seattle for just 3rd and 4th round picks, totally ignoring that Alphonzo Smith was the prime focus of the trade!

As McD said in his interview on NFL.com: "We don't care in the slightest what anyone else thinks about a player. We do a very careful examination and and evaluation in creating our draft board and know just what we want from the players at each position and their relative value to US." That is all that matters not at all what someone else might think or where another team or analyst might value that player".

In other words, they have a specific plan they are trying to implement that plan for the benefit of the immediate and long term future of Bronocos success.

They are NOT beholding to or kowtowed the Mel Kiper's or Mike Mayock ... nor even Mocks of this world, when putting together a team, thank heavens! They actually spent a few more hours examining the issue than any one here .

That being the case , why not give them the benefit of the doubt and wait and at Least SEE, how this first draft turns out over the course of this year and the next few before tar and feathering the guys solely because they lacked the piercing vision possessed by any number of keyboard jockeys on these fan boards?

I mean at least let them ***** up a couple drafts .. or at least one .. and prove so when most of the picks prove to be busts before canceling your season tickets?

These guys might turn out to be sterling geniuses for all we know now, or hapless morons (not likely), but since no one on this planet has ever SEEN the results of a McD/Xanders draft, we just don't yet know.

I don't have a big problem with the draft. Moreno looks like he's a 15 TD/yr guy. Ayers looks like he's a solid pick. Al Smith looks like a playmaker. McBath looks like a playmaker. Quinn looks like he'll be a chainmover.

That's the first 5 picks, I'll say B- overall.

Sorry it took a day, 60 hour work weeks, a fiancee with a kidney transplant, and a soon to be step child in another state are intense too.

http://www.nfl-draft-site.com/2008/0...esthe-afc.html B+ (05/10/08)

http://footballjabber.com/2008/04/29...-draft-grades/ B (4/29/08)

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/footb...t-grades_N.htm D+ (04/27/08)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...roundup/1.html (no grade given, but not at all positive, I would say D is what Z was shooting for, and that is optimistic, we were the last team listed) (4/28/08)

Additionally Mile High Report has several others listed, the links didn't work for me so I didn't bring them over, but they were all negative (C- to D- from the excerpts I saw). Overall we recieved pretty low grades last year, I would say about the same as we recieved this year. I hope we hit gold twice in a row and prove the pundits wrong.

Ayers being talked about as rookie of the year, Smith nearly matching Champs output from game 1 on, and Moreno as a top 5 RB next year would be required to match that 2008 draft. Just Clady and Royal made that an A+ class, assuming they continue to produce at the same level. I doubt we will get that kinda of success, but even 1 of those three plus another solid starter and a rotational player or two would get this class a B or better in my book.
