What would this mean for our O-line? He's left-handed, therefore his blind side is the right side. Does this mean Clady and Harris would switch positions? If not, what adjustments must the line make to accomodate Simms?

Harris is a good RT, and since the majority of pass rushing DEs in the league line up over the LT regardless of which arm the QB throws with, it is basically guaranteed no changes would be made because of Simms being left handed.

Wouldn't mean a thing, Harris is a LT who has been switched, he is a not mauling runblocker who gets abused on passing downs.

I know you are talking about the O-line. However, if Simms wins the starting job, then that means we are in dire straits and our QB position is so bad that it really doesnt matter who is guarding his blind side.
I would hope we wouldnt change Clady up. And this is why: 1. Clady is good where he is. Very good. 2. Clady is young. Lets not run the risk of screwing up a good thing by puttin him on the other side, because - 3. If Simms does win the starting job, then I figure we will be looking for a new QB soon - as in immediately. And most likely, that new QB will be right-handed and will be well served by having Clady remain exactly where he is. |

bear in mind, I think our o-line is in for a rough year. Jay was pretty phenomenally difficult to tackle in the backfield. Orton and Simms are both fairly static, which means if the O-line messes up, then Jay's not there to save them.

Jay is not Ben Rothlesberger. Take a look at the 07 games. He looks bad when the heat gets turned up.

Simms only wins the spot if Orton gets hurt.
The o-line would not make any switches just because of a lefty thrower. If Orton got hurt during a game and Simms came in, you really believe they'd switch Clady and Harris in the middle of a game? |

That he lacks the skillz to win the starting job is something else. In my hypothetical little world, he wins by surprising coaches and then the world with heretofore unseen talent. Then throws six interception in the superbowl. |

Yes, don't let Jay get any compliments on here. Gimme a break. I don't know if Elway could've done anything with the 07 line towards the last half of the year. I wonder if people even watch the games.

This is an interesting question though, BombQ ... I honestly think Simms has a better than 50-50 chance to win this job. Fewer lefties than we thought: Quote:

It's a good question. The biggest problem for Simms being lefthanded may not be the o-line but the receivers. The pass-catchers are taught to grab with their hands and that pass will now be coming with the opposite spin from which the receivers are used to so there could be more drops by the receivers. Particularly in a mid-game QB switch, that could create problems.
I also think Simms has a stronger arm than Orton so the pass may arrive a split-second sooner than an Orton-trained receiver is expecting. Having watched a lot of Simms in college, I think he has starting NFL QB talent but he doesn't have it between the ears. In the end, he's a rich kid who just doesn't have the extra gear to push himself when the going gets tough. |
