Default An open letter to Orangemane (health update)

Hello all.

There have been many that have expressed interest in my health, and where I am in my progression of Pulmonary Fibrosis. So I am here to answer those questions and also to say a couple things that I feel now is the time to say them.

But before I go into all that, I wanted to say again what it meant to my wife and I that you guys sent us on that vacation last year. Fact is, I would not be able to make that trip now. It was given to us at a time when we could enjoy it. It was important, and it left an impact on us that we will never forget. Thank you again for that.

For those that have asked about my health and how I am doing, I have been telling you that I feel I am half way through my progression. Being diagnosed back in May of last year, that would leave what one would estimate as a year left to live. I haven't been entirely honest. I'm in my final stages. I figure 2 months or so. I have spent the last week in St. Louis being evaluated for lung transplant. It's the evaluation process you go through when you are in the final stages of your disease. The good news is, I was put on the transplant list. The bad news is that any time you are faced with this type of surgery there is always a chance you dont get off the table. Even though I feel like I will be one of the lucky ones, the times dictate that anything I want to say to my friends and family, I need to get it said.

I am guessing that with the recent speed of progression, the true time I have left is 2 months tops. If a lung comes available that time could be considerably longer. The reason I wasn't up front about my health and how much time I thought I had was because I didn't want to put the pressure on others to say something profound, or for them to feel uncomfortable. I know how I feel when faced with a freinds struggles and how much I want to help. I hope you understand why I haven't been honest.

The other thing that needs to be said is what you have meant to me. Orangemane has always been really good for me. Even back in my trolling days. I cant tell you how much I laughed, poking at you guys, watching you go off the deep end. It was a lot of fun. But I always wanted to be the poster that even though I was ribbing you, I was still a guy you could count on when you needed a neighbor. I always felt like when one of you were down, I wanted to be one that help raise you back up. Very much like you guys did for me. I wanted to be known as someone that had a heart when it was appropriate, but cut you like a razor when challenged. I hope that is what I have been here. If you have any other impression, then it was not my intention.

Now, I just try to be the opposing fan with a reasonable point of view. just one of the guys. Just another Orangemaner. All in all the OM has played a mjor role in my football experience, and it has always been a positive one. After all, isn't that the true purpose of this place anyway? Thank you Taco.

In closing I want to say, no matter what happens my experience here has been exceptional. The people have been exceptional.

You've been real good to me.

I love ya.

Man there are no words anyone could say to try to lighten the burden. So I will just say I hope its not 2 months and I hope you have the chance to see many many KC Chiefs games and for YOUR sake a SB. But more importantly I hope you get many more years with your family.

Stay strong and enjoy your time.

All I can say is that you're a bigger man than most of us. In fact... all of us.

God bless you and your family and I'll continue to assume you'll buck any odds that face you.

It is difficult to know what to say. I agree with the other posters of course. And I hope maybe there's another miracle out there for you and the least you get to spend some more time with the people who love you most. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers and I truly hope things will turn around for you.

Hang tough, Crazy. You've shown us all what a humble and yet determined fighter looks like. Thanks for giving a lesson in candidness, for demonstrating what real strength is, and for giving us a glimpse of your life. I pray these lessons won't be wasted and that all here might gain a healthy dose of charity and fellowship toward each other from your post.

Dan it was a pleasure meeting you several years ago. You aren't so bad for a chiefs fan.

I wish you the best.

You'll get a donor ... and then you'll floor that 428 cubic inches off the table to your family and your Chiefs.

(And to continue tweaking all of us ... )

Keep your spirits up!

I hope for the best and the transplant is successful and gives you more life than 2 months. If it does, make sure you come back (or your wife) to let us know you made it through the surgery. Then we all know that we can start razzing you on your pathetic Chiefs during training camp.

I'll echo what Meck said. It was a pleasure meeting you a few years ago in KC. You have the strength I aspire to have if I'm ever faced with a terminal illness. You may think you have 2 months, but I'm praying for a miracle. The world can't afford to lose good people like you...
