Canadian extreme skier and base jumper, Shane McConkey, died Thursday following a ski-base accident that ocurred while filming his latest movie in Italy, the Inquisitr reported. McConkey, 39, experienced problems in the air after jumping off of a cliff in the expectation that he would be able to detach his skis and deploy his parachute, thus enabling him to glide safely to the ground, according to the Inquisitr. According to a witness, one of McConkey's skis failed to detach causing him to spin out of control and ultimately prevented him from deploying his parachute, the Inquisitr reported. McConkey is survived by his wife, Sherry, and their 3½-year-old daughter Ayla. Shane McConkey in Claim from Phil Herbert on Vimeo. Last edited by Needa Pass Rush; 04-07-2009 at 08:58 PM.. |

The winged suit is worth a watch if you've never seen it before.

When your obit casually says, "experienced problems in the air after jumping off of a cliff" you've probably done some nutty sh#t. Yeah, I'd experience some problems too, starting with the soiling of the trousers and crying like a little girl but that would be before the ACTUAL part where I jump off the cliff. After that Gravity, my old nemisis, becomes my problem.

I can't help but think that this is a stupid way to go. When you have a child it isn't about just you anymore. Now that little girl has to grow up without her father.

Hopefully he had life insurance and I agree with your post 100 percent. When you have kids, your life is no longer just yours and you need to compensate for that. Otherwise you might as well have just been a dead beat dad.

I'm sure the guy probably lived enough for 2 or 3 lifetimes and it was a hell of alot more thrilling than what I am doing in corporate America. But I have a 4 month old daughter and I can't help but think the guy was very selfish and he is not only going to miss out on a lot, but so is his daughter. And for what, really?

It's tempting to write that hopefully his death plus that of Jeremy Lusk in Feb. will open some naive eyes to just how very dangerous these adrenaline "sports" really are. But sadly, it won't make much difference.
Just look at how many people line up to climb Mt. Everest despite the odds of death. |
