Default Jets Kerry Rhodes Not a Cutler Fan

Kerry Not a Cutler Fan
March 26, 2009
If the Jets trade for disgruntled Broncos QB Jay Cutler, it'll create an interesting dynamic in the locker room. S Kerry Rhodes, one of the most respected players on the team, made it quite clear today that he doesn't like Cutler.

Rhodes' initial dislike for Cutler surfaced after last November's loss to the Broncos, when the affable Rhodes refused to discuss Cutler in a post-game interview -- a rare display of snippiness by Rhodes. Today, the Jets opened their locker room to the media (something Eric Mangini never did during the offseason), giving Rhodes another chance to address Cutler.

"Me and Jay just don't get along too well right now," Rhodes said. "We'll talk about that later if we play them somewhere. I'll be happy to talk about it then."

I reminded Rhodes that the Jets are interested in Cutler, and that he could be sharing a locker room with him.

"If he's in my locker room, he's going to be a teammate," Rhodes said. "I'm not going to go and fight him when he gets in the locker room. We'll see what happens."

Rhodes was reluctant to get into specifics, but he said his feud with Cutler has been going on "since we've been in the NFL." It escalated in last year's blowout loss to the Broncos, when Cutler did some trash talking to some of Rhodes' teammates.

"I took some (offense) to that," Rhodes said.

Asked if he's bothered by Cutler's well-documented cockiness, Rhodes said, "You can be confident, but when you're too confident for your own self, that can be a little tough."

Rhodes was in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl -- as a guest, not a participant -- when Cutler was thrown in a swimming pool by a couple of AFC teammates, including Jets C Nick Mangold. Rhodes was asked if he was involved in the dunking. He laughed.

"Yeah, I was one of the guys tipping him over," Rhodes said.

Only kidding, Rhodes said. But you got the feeling he wished he wasn't kidding.

I asked Rhodes to evaluate Cutler strictly from a football standpoint.

"He's a good player," he said. "He can make a lot of things happen on the field. We know that. We saw him do it against us. He's a good player. I don't know if I said I want him, but he's a good player. I'm not the whole decision on this."

After talking to several players, I got the distinct feeling that the veterans would like to see Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff and Erik Ainge get first dibs on the starting job. There wasn't a whole lot of Cutler love.

On one hand, trash talk is part of the game. Although, with Cutler I get the impression that this stuff consumes him on the field.

That game showed what a healthy Peyton Hillis meant to this team... and what a butthurt looser Kerry Rhodes apparently is.

I have the same feeling. I thought it would have happened by now. Outside of some outlandish offer from some other team, I think Cutler will be the Broncos QB this season.

After the way Cutler carved him up (in horrible weather no less) I'd be a little pissed too.

I would be bitter too if the Denver Broncos broke your 5 game winning streak.

Jay Cutler torched them that day, in the rain.

I feel pretty much the same, however, I won't be 100% confident until after the draft.

... which would be fine if he backed it up on the field. But, with the playoffs on the line against Buffalo, he didn't.

But, he's young. He DOES have the physical talent to be a Hall of Fame QB, in my opinion.

It's a total crap-shoot as to this kid's career. Hall of fame, or a career of this kind of nonsense.

Neither would surprise me too much.

It is becoming clear why McDaniels is looking to dump him and I'm gonna chose to believe in McDaniels so I'm good either way.

I have a feeling that Rivers will talk smack about what he is doing to you or about to do and Cutler makes it personal. He may talk about the other player. I could be wrong, but there seems to be strong feelings towards Cutler.

I don't know Popps. Eventually his teammates will tire of his antics and the BS pouty crap he pulls will not be accepted just b/c he is Jay Cutler. I look forward to McD changing that and making him aware that his body language says as much as words and both should be chosen carefully.

It's okay to get mad when your receiver misses a pass or runs a bad route. It is okay to get fired up and talk a little trash during the game.

Smacking your kicker after missing a FG or screaming at your TE when he misses an on target pass (after you've missed him several times yourself) is not what we look for in a leader. Body language. Cutler's teammates are professionals as well. When they miss a pass or a FG or any assignment...THEY KNOW! They don't need their pouty QB showing them up on the field.

I hope that McD can point those things out and that will be part of his "coaching" him up to his system (and team first philosophy). I think it is probably obvious that Jay Cutler's physical abilities are enough to make any OC or QB coach drool over. I'd also guess that McD knew about some of the behaviors that were less than desirable, but probably didn't know the extent of those behaviors. He obviously has a pretty good idea now! lol

The million dollar question now is, Will McD get his message to sink in to Jay Cutler? That will be his biggest challenge as a HC. Get Cutler on board and to understand that the perception must be that they are all equal (even if Cutler is more important on the field) and therefore the only one to critique on the field or off will be the coaches... and McD will have a lot of success in Denver and Jay Cutler could very well blossom into a HOF QB. If Jay doesn't get that message, he likely does get traded in the future where he'll go off and learn in his time, become a good QB, but probably never a HOF caliber QB.

No I agree that Trash Talk is part of the game. When it becomes unnecessary is when the game is over. If you're up by 20 points in the 4th quarter and still talking trash, you're probably an a-hole. If you're down by 20 points in the 4th quarter and still talking trash, you're probably a dummy!

I think the biggest problem with Cutler is that he doesn't have that mountain man, porn-stache moxy with the half crazed hobo look in his eye.

When Plummer yelled at his OL and they yelled back at him, it was all moxy, all the great competitor Plummer was etc etc.

When Cutler yells at team mates or trash talks, it's because he's a mopey, emo headed whining crybaby, all because he's missing that moxy!!
