Spider, check out this earth mover used for coal mining...

------------------------------------------------------------------
Specifications:

* 311 feet tall
* 705 feet long
* Weighs 45,500 tons
* Removes 100,000 cubic yards per day
* It moves on 8 front tracks and 4 back tracks
* Each track is 12' wide, 8' high, and 46' long, about the size of a school bus
* Cost: $100 million each
* Took 5 years to design and manufacture plus another 5 years to assemble
* Requires 5 operators
* Maximum speed 1/3 mile per hour

That behemoth is in Germany, IIRC. Saw a show about it on History Channel once.

Here's the kind they use in WY for coal mining. Saw it on "Modern Marvels" last night - one of the largest, if not the largest, in the world.



Bucket Capabilities: 76 to 116m3 (100 to 152yd3)
Boom Lengths: 109.7 to 132.5m (360 to 435ft)
Rated Suspended Load: 226,800 to 344,736kg (500,000 to 760,000lbs)
Approx. Working Weight: 7,620,480kg (16,800,000lbs)

Draglines are cost friendly to mining companies when it comes to eating mountains.

take a year just to tear that thing down to haul it

Big Bertha , she was first constructed to help build Yellow tail damn , then she went to Black Thunder coal for awhile , I dont know where she is now though
