Default Broncos must spend $20 million in cap space

A point of clarification for those wondering how active the Broncos will be in free agency. The CBA requires that teams meet a minimum team salary that is 86.7% of the salary cap. With the salary cap moving up to $127 million in 2009, that minimum amount sits at just over $110 million. Adam Schefter reports the Broncos are approximately $37 million under the salary cap. A quick look at the math tell us the Broncos (currently at a $90 million payroll) need to allocate $20 million in salary cap space to satisfy the minimum salary requirements set forth by the CBA.

Sign me, sign me!

I'll do kick returns for 2 mil per year. I don't mind long snapping if Leach goes down either. Is there an application, or do I just send a photo?

That's only 3 new players which isn't nearly enough, so not done.

The topic was the 20 mil...not filling the roster.

This should put to rest the idea that we won't be (at least a little) active in free agency.

That means that several above average sized contracts will need to be signed for the hit to equal the minimum.

The good news is we have some young people to sign to extensions to so that means we can spend some of it on our sure things.

Not only are half of those guys NOT FAs, but that's one of the most talentless lists I've ever come across.

and to add to that...Shanny's last few defensive drafts comprise the most talentless list that I have seen in a while.

We have a LOT of holes and we can't afford to pay big money to fill them all. Burnett can come in and compete at ILB. He covers well and can get to the QB. He's added 15 pounds n the past few years. He's had some injuries, bnut nothing too serious and that also keeps his cost own.

Mike Wright is experienced depth as a 3-4 DE. Adding him to Canty gives the DE spot some stability.

Boley excelled when Atlanta ran the 3-4. Down year as a 4-3 OLB in 08, but that will drive the cost down.

I like Rhodes. Some don't. I get if yer not feling him.

Bryant Johnson as a 3rd option would be very strong. He creates mismatches w/ his size. Besides, he'll be cheap and Royal is apparently going to the slot. Bash if ya want, but all are better than what we had in 2007 and won't hurt our long term cap numbers.

Side note NFL channel stated that cap went up additional 4M next season (i think, the woman report butchered the story) . Stated Denver had 37Million in cap room this year.

With free agency set to begin near the end of this month, SFI takes a look at some of the top veterans on the San Francisco roster that will become free agents if they are not signed to deals with the team by Feb. 27. Should the 49ers make an effort to bring them back or let them go? We take a look at both sides. Today: The case of wide receiver Bryant Johnson, who’s a tough call for the 49ers.

He wasn’t going to be a complement with the 49ers. Johnson signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the team last year with an opportunity to vie for status as the team’s top receiving target as a starter.

49ers seek WR with experience, right-tackle help
Sacramento Bee

"The NFL's free-agency period begins tonight at 9:01 with the 49ers insisting they will not make a big splash but needing help at a number of positions. Some players who might pique their interest:
Moran Norris, fullback: Norris was the team's fullback in 2006 and 2007, but he didn't fit Mike Martz's system and was released. New offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye is looking for a powerful, sledge-hammer-style lead blocker, and that's Norris' profile. Norris is also friends with tailback Frank Gore. Raye would be interested in former pupil Tony Richardson, but Richardson is expected to remain with the Jets.
Nate Washington, wide receiver: The 49ers are not expected to re-sign Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce's return is "50-50," according to general manager Scot McCloughan. That means there will be a dearth of experience in the wide receiver corps. Washington is someone who not only can stretch the field, but who can block downfield in the running game. T.J. Houshmandzadeh is everything the 49ers want in a receiver but he'll likely end up elsewhere.
Takeo Spikes, linebacker: Spikes has said he wants to return and the 49ers certainly don't have anyone else to play the "ted" linebacker spot. As he did last year, look for Spikes to take his time in signing his contract but to ultimately return. The 49ers also could use a young, inexpensive backup at the position."

Good post, and you're 100% right about the fact that we're not going to go out and sign 5 Pro Bowlers like some of these dopes seem to think.

Oh, I'm sure he's just in hysterics watching Javon Walker march out the door with his millions after talking him out of retiring and giving all the money back last year.

Yeah, life is a real scream for Al Davis these days.
