Default Gibril Wilson Headed to Miami

WILSON LANDS WITH FINS
Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 8:37 a.m.

At a time when we here at PFT are looking for a few good hamsters to power the servers, the Dolphins have landed a Gibril to enhance the defense.

Free-agent safety Gibril Wilson, a member of the Giants’ Super Bowl XLII championship team who was cut by the Raiders less than a year after signing a big-money deal, has agreed to terms with the Fins, according to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com.

The addition of Wilson gives Miami some protection against the fact that both starting safeties from 2008, Renaldo Hill and Yeremiah Bell, will become unrestricted free agents at midnight.

I want Bell. I've seen him play a lot and he'd be the safety we're looking for.

I don't understand how this is possible. How can they have a deal in place? Free agency hasn't even started. Isn't that illegal?

Yeah I watched a lot of Dolphins last year - Bell would be a very welcomed addition to the team.

You still haven't convinced your brother to root for the right team?

I believe once he is cut he can speak with teams but FA signing doesn't occur until the "New Season" starts marking the beginning of FA. Since he is already officially cut its not tampering.

Kind of like the first pick of the draft. They have a deal in place before the draft.

Interesting, I didn't realize that. Does that also include UFAs?

No I don't think so. They become FA when the new season starts tonight at midnight. When they are cut the contract is null and void at that point.

Nope. And last year was pretty much the first time he had the right to talk smack.

Bell had 120 tackles this season! I could definitely live with he and James Sanders in the secondary.

A player who is cut can negotiate and sign any deal once he clears waivers.

Wilson also got $16.5m over the first 3 years with $8m guaranteed. That certainly isn't cheap for a safety and is a measuring stick as the likes of Bell/Jones etc will be looking more.

No, once a player is cut, he is free game to anyone. He's not a free agent, he's just a player released from his contract. UFA's cannot sign till free agency period which is tomorrow

Nope, as it was already stated, if someone is cut they are free to sign with a new team immediately.

UFA players are STILL part of their team until midnight tonight. he was cut, he is not part of any team and thus can sign anywhere.

Gibril Wilson is actually a good player, though. Miami is supposedly trying to keep Bell too, at least according to the Schefter blog on NFL.com.

I was answering his other question about UFA's. I am not talking about Cut players.

Only players with less than 4 years of accrued experience have to clear waivers. Veterans like Wilson are free agents as soon as they are cut, they do not go through waivers.

Guess this means the current staff has high expectations for Josh Barrett.

How so? There are still several good options available at the position.

No don't you get it. If the Broncos don't sign the first FA in an area of need they aren't allowed to sign that position. Its in the CBA and specific only to the Broncos!

One thing we should keep in mind is that all bets are off for any players. Guys we thought were good might struggle in this scheme and be unsuccessful. There's always at least a few of those guys during any regime change. The good news is guys that seem like a bust can suddenly thrive under new coaching that has better ways to teach and use them. Jerry Porter is a good example in Miami.

I'm not saying Barrett is going to be as good as Jerry Porter, but its possible that guys like him could suddenly rind a role they do well and become contributors on this team. Likewise there will be guys we thought were productive who might get washed out.

Not necessarily, there are a lot of other safety options including James Sanders, Mike Brown, Yeremiah Bell, Jermaine Phillips and Sean Jones.

doesn't mean that at all. It could be Wilson had no interest in playing for a crappy defense and see's miami as a better spot to play.
