It's one of the best ever, but I'd be hesitent to call it the best ever. It is pretty varied in style, so to label it just a punk album is kinda misleading (Sandinista! the album that came after Calling, is even more varied, but not everything worked on it as often as things worked on Calling).
I loved The Clash, but there are many albums in the genre that are Calling's equal IMHO and maybe even more important historically than it. My recommendations for classic pure punk albums (off the top of my head) are as follows: The Damned - Damned, Damned, Damned The Damned - Machine Gun Ettiquette The Clash - The Clash (US Version) The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bullocks Black Flag - Damaged Circle Jerks - Group Sex The Saints - (I'm) Stranded The Saints - Eternally Yours Fear - The Record Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables Dead Kennedys - Frankenchrist Husker Du - Flip Your Wig D.O.A. - Bloodied But Unbowed Stiff Little Fingers - All The Best The Stooges - The Stooges The Stooges - Fun House The Stooges - Raw Power Flipper - Generic Flipper Ramones - Ramones Ramones - Leave Home Those are just the ones I consider 100% solid from first cut to last. My March is pretty much booked solid or I'd be happy to burn a few of these for you. Get back to me in April if you like and we'll set something up. Hope that helps. I'm not sure what's considered "punk", but I have been recently listening to some Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys...
