Default Jim Calhoun (UCONN Coach) vs. "Reporter"

So an "activist" got into a post game press conference and started asking Jim Calhoun about his gigantic salary. Personally, I think both people came out looking like idiots. The activist should have put a lot more thought into what he was going to say, and probably SHOULD have gotten more facts. Although i do agree with the principle of his argument, i just think he was too quick to do it for shock factor and for the sake of making noise than for the actual "cause" of his efforts, and probably could have done more homework.

Calhoun, on the other hand, looked very defensive and once he found the one thing that couldn't be argued he decided to start shouting the same phrase over and over. Not very articulate, and so what if they turn over 12M to the university? That's the university. How much of that goes to the state?

I understand that sports sort of transcend the regular population in that they live in a financial bubble of sorts, but when it is COLLEGE sports and the coaches ARE state employees, well then what?

The sound is pretty low so i advise turning way up.

Good for him. He's been a damn fine coach for a long time. He's earned his money. It's not like he's directly responsible for the economic crisis. But I believe Home Depot gave a $210 million dollar severance package to their CEO, this is a problem. America has lacked common sense at the top for too long.

The refs in college sports are pretty bad. Anyone watch my Cougars squeak one out against UCLA the other day? We rose to the occaision and were 30 points better than UCLA and the refs could only bring UCLA within 1 in the end.

PAC 10 refs are ****ing terrible thats for sure.

You missed the point.

He earns his salary. See, he is a damn fine coach and has been a damn fine coach for a very long time. In his tenure, the basketball team has probably averaged around 10 million a year in revenue for the school, of which his salary comes out of that. It doesnt cost the tax payers a dime to pay his salary at all and he is absolutely worth it with the ratio of revenue he brings the university.

The activist is an idiot. Just because times are tough for some people in this country (and lets be honest here, 90% of the American work force still is employed and paying their bills), does not mean that all people who make 7 figures should forfeit their salaries.

Its quickly becoming a crime to be a hard working person who earns a large salary in this country and understood to be equitable and fair to be a person who takes government handouts. Calhoun worked for years and years to get to the position he's in financially, good for him!

As soon as Congress and the Senate give up their lifetime salary (if you are not aware, once elected, they receive their salary for the REST OF THEIR LIFE, AND IF THEIR SPOUSE OUTLIVES THEM, THEY GET THE SALARY, besides other benefits)
Then I will worry about someone who is earning their salary while working.

This reporter should be tar and feathered in the media, but I am sure that will not happen.

Other than paying taxes, what does Calhoun owe to the state of Connecticut? Calhoun has built a program that more than pays for his salary. This media hack has earned a lifetime ban on press passes.

The reporter needs to realize the money Calhoun pays in taxes supports 3 or 4 welfare families. Also, who gives a **** how much he gets paid? His job is to maintain a prestigious basketball program and win championships...if he is doing that, he earns his dough. Never understand the impulse some people have to penalize successful people.

That young prick asking the question in the interview comes across as a young person who has done nothing his whole life, yet still looks cross eyed at a guy who clawed his way through the coaching ranks and generates millions of dollars to the University. Just like Calhoun I give a ton in taxes and since this administration seems hell bent on giving handouts maybe Pelosi will stimulate your cupcake sale the next go around of bailouts...your cause seems just as good as any of the other crap they seem happy to throw money at.

Hopefully that is a joke, name one CEO of a company who has 10 million a year revenue who could get away with a 1.7 million a year salary.

If the CEO of a company or the coach of a team takes home 20% of the revenue plus benefits, you are in some serious trouble.

Josh Mcdaniels take home about twice that amount and he is the HC of a team that revenues well into the 9 digits per year.

If it wasnt for Calhoun, you wouldnt have a division one football program at Conneticut. He earns enough money for the basketball program, football and TITLE 9 girl water polo or whatever they offer. The wouldnt pay it if he wasnt worth it.

So whatever a company pays an employee that employee has earned? I think a lot of people would disagree with you on that one, but maybe you don't mind that your tax dollars are being used to pay bonuses and salaries to bankers and wall street people?

Maybe, maybe not, but in this case yes I think Jim earns every penny.

Maybe, maybe not, but that doesn't apply here. You have to understand what a coach like Jom pulls for an athletic program like UCONN's. We're talking scholarship money, student admission, Title 9 funding, and a profitable basket ball program.
