Default Broncos will be aggressive in free agency

Broncos will be aggressive in free agency
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post

Denver Head Coach Josh McDainels gives the "McStare" while biting his "McLip"

INDIANAPOLIS There are indications Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is going to give new head coach Josh McDaniels every chance to succeed.

Cut through the pep talks and pats on the back and there's really only one way an owner can help a coach by opening his pocket book.

Nowhere is money more necessary than in the free-agent market. And come Feb. 27, when free agency begins, the Broncos will be aggressive.

"As aggressive as we need to be," McDaniels said today at his NFL scouting combine press conference. "We're interested in a lot of things. We have areas that we can improve on. We have, like every team does, needs and holes to fills. If there's a player out there that we feel is going to fill that, then we're going to be aggressive and pursue him."

Cash was an issue for the Broncos when they entered the free-agent market last offseason. Even with a sagging economy, there appears to be fewer cash restrictions this year.

"Just the salary cap," McDaniels said. "We're looking to bring in players that can help us. We do have cap room available so we'll see how it goes in the next few weeks."

After slashing nearly $30 million in cap dollars by releasing seven high-profile players last week, the Broncos are nearly $40 million below this season's salary cap figure of $123 million.

Among the team's needs: Up to eight defensive starters, a running back and possibly another receiver and kicker.

As for the defense, McDaniels publicly acknowledged for the first time what had been suspected all along.

"You're going to see some 3-4 from us," McDaniels said. "I'm not going to say we're going to be all 3-4, but it's going to be some combination thereof."

McDaniels also said he and quarterback Jay Cutler have become acquainted to the point their relationship is about the coach wanting to make the quarterback better and the quarterback willing to listen.

For Cutler, getting better means cutting down on mistakes.

"Quarterbacks, that's always the goal," McDaniels said. "Making good decisions. He's certainly made plenty of them. I don't think there's any quarterback that goes through a season that doesn't make some mistakes."

McDaniels also said one of his early challenges as a first-time head coach was deciding was whether to institute yoga into his team's strength and conditioning program. The decision?

"I think it's a no," he said, smiling. "I said no."

i agree we will be agressive, been saying it all offseason. the cash cutting was to get player McDaniels and staff want, and to begin extending our own guys.

I wish we would have gone with yes on the yoga. I'm getting pretty sick and tired of all the ****ing hamstring problems we've had lately.

I think this trumps any idea that the Broncos were going to be passive and frugal about the team this offseason. I hope they spend every penny they have rebuilding the defense the way it should be. But then again, it's not me footing the bill, so...

He never said they were gonna sign a bunch of dudes. he they would if the fit is good. He was being very evasive, pretty saavy. Notice he didnt say "there are guys out there and we'll be aggressive." He said "if"

No doubt, some of you have heard the story about Kareem Abdul Jabbar (formerly Lou Alcinder), who always raved about yoga.

Kareem swore it was the reason for his mostly injury-free career in the NBA.

Maybe -- in time -- our new coach will see the light. Why not use every possible means to help the Bronco players reach their potential?

Why couldn't yoga be one of them?

The beauty of yoga is that it's free. It's not some high tech gadget oriented fad.

It's a proven system -- has been around for thousands of years. Why not make it an option for those who are interested??

Are you listening, coach?

i agree, if we weren't going to dump our S&C coaches we should have instituted Yoga. Every game it seemed like someone was limping off the field or pulling up lame with a pulled muscle, and as far as i am concerned that falls on the S&C coaches.

The stretching would be good. Maybe not the spiritual portion.

Nope...just stating facts. Shanny tried this and we all know where it landed us. This team needs a scouting department comparable to the Steelers and Pats and a commitment to using homegrown talent. I hate the idea of spending huge money on FA's that rarely live up to their billing.

Call that pessimism if you want, but it's true.

Aggressive means they'll go aggressively after the people they think can work here. It doesn't mean they'll go after every free agent available.

Sure hope you're right, but wasn't that Shanny's philosophy too? Everybody goes after players they think will work in their system. I'm more interested in what we do in the draft.

One thing is different. The DC.

Nolan hopefully will bring his 'A' game....unlike Ray Rhodes....Bates....and god help us, Slo-wick.
