Lower Round "Wish List"

We all know there are some players that seem obvious, and others we would like to see on the team because we think they could bring something special. This thread would hope to look for players you see going in rounds 3-7 that might not be the top of the team's priority list, but are great football players.

I'll start.

My player comes at a position where I think we already have our starters, but I just love watching this kid play.

Chase Coffman, TE Mizzou. Watching a lot of Big 12, I saw Coffman as the "go to guy" for Chase Daniels. Maclin is a great receiver, but I think Coffman may be even more special at his position. At 6'6"., he has the frame to add much more weight. On the right team, he could be the next Jason Witten.

I don't know if he goes in the second or third, but I think he might be the best TE of this entire draft. A real weapon.

Lee Robinson, OLB.

He plays at a tiny little school, but he is super productive (44 tackles for loss over 4 years). He is a good sized outside linebacker with excellent downhill speed, experience as a blitzing OLB, good strength, has covered tight ends.

I really like him as a prospect SOLB, who blitzes, covers, tackles and does everything.

I have to pimp Vaughn Martin, he is a 325 lb DT who runs a sub 5 second 40 yard dash and is a bit of a physical specimen. If you never heard of him that is fine, if you never hear of him you are missing out.

I had never heard of him before. Nfldraftscout.com has him ranked as DT #999 out of 163. Did he get invited to the combine? Do you think he'll get drafted?

DE/OLB Brandon Swain, 6' 4" 255 lbs. West Texas A&M 4.69:
He is one of the most athletic defensive ends coming into the 2009 NFL Draft. He had 14 sacks and five forced fumbles last year. He is a quarterbacks nightmare. He has good speed off the edge and a desire to get in the backfield and make plays. His 40 yard dash time of 4.69 is quite impressive for a lineman. He should be a steal in the middle rounds.

How is he "more polished?" Was he responsible for getting any starting NFL CB's cut from their team (see DeAngelo Hall)?

Unlike Royal, Thomas is better at running routes and has more experience in spread offense. Thomas is a little quicker out of the slot, works the middle far better then Royal coming out VT and might have better hands. Prime example Thomas ended his career as the leading Pac-10 Conference's career reception maker and was routinely double team by PAC-10 defense.

The only knock on Thomas is his height. But someone is going to get a heck of player that going to make difference from both the slot position and return kicks and punts.

Thomas may be shorter than scouts would like, but he has everything else to buck the odds as an undersized NFL receiver. Thomas' reliable hands, crisp routes, agility and straight-line speed make him a legitimate playmaker as a receiver and return specialist.


The Pac-10's all-time leader with 259 receptions, Thomas twice earned first-team all-conference accolades, registering 157 catches and 15 touchdowns over his final two seasons. Wanting to show scouts that he could contribute on special teams as well, Thomas moved to punt returner as a senior, scoring two touchdowns and garnering first-team All-Pac-10 accolades.


Sure, he lacks size, but a slot receiver with Thomas' return ability will find his way into the middle of teams' draft boards.

1/10/09: The "other" USC linebacker, Kaluka Maiava qualified for the All-Pac 10 Second Team, thanks to 66 tackles, 7.5 TFL and five passes broken up.

12/6/08: Just what we need - another Jason Williams to confuse us all. This one had 107 tackles, 16.5 TFL and eight sacks as a junior.

Im very high on Thomas too, but more polished than Royal?

Maybe in college, but the way Royal transferred right into his rookie season is something I dont see Thomas doing at the level Royal did.

I really hope we take a look at him tho, he would be an instant slot for us for sure.

I highly doubt he will be drafted, I am not even sure he gets signed as a UDFA. I have seen him play and he is very athletic for a big man, but very raw and I think he probably stands out as much because of the weak competition as his own merits.

He is not at the combine, but will be at 2 pro days in late March and has had preliminary talks with the Jets and Browns, as well as phone interviews with a number of teams.

Well, given the number of NTs on the roster right now, my view is if someone weighs 320+ and can last a game of football without passing out, we should probably be looking at him.

Everette Pedescleaux, DE, Northern Iowa - 6'6 - 305

Overview

Pedescleaux, a one-time finalist for Minnesota’s “Mr. Basketball” award, has certainly found his way on the football field. After three years developing his game as defensive lineman, Pedescleaux finally had his breakout campaign as a senior. He recorded 62 tackles, 11½ TFL (tackles for loss) and 6½ sacks, good enough to earn him AP Football Championship Series third-team All-America honors.

Scout’s Take

A tall (6-6), long-armed lineman who displays excellent overall athleticism for his size. He’s a gifted physical specimen with a quick first step and rare straight-line speed (4.9) at the position. Plays with natural flexibility and has a lot of tools to work with. Works hard in pursuit and has the toughness to line up inside at DT and work against the double-team. Is very competitive and doesn’t take plays off. Is still very raw and has a lot of work to do from a technical standpoint. Lacks great overall strength but has the frame and natural skill set to develop.

Rundown

With more NFL teams searching for potential five-technique defensive linemen, Pedescleaux’s name will certainly be a topic of conversation in draft rooms around the NFL. Although he played predominantly as the three-technique at Northern Iowa, his skill set, size and length scream 3-4 DE. He is still raw and will need some time to develop his strength and overall technique. But the guy has one of the most intriguing skill sets of any defensive lineman in the draft, and I can’t imagine a team not taking a flier on him in the later rounds. He simply possesses too much upside and potential.


How about a 338 lb NT, and two 300+ lb DEs, one on each side?

Rashard Jennings. i think he is one of the top RB's in this draft and he might be available as late as the 4th round. i would pick him up in the 3rd personally, just to be safe and actually get him if we don't go after a RB in the 1st 2 rounds.

his size and strength would be awesome for us, and unlike Torain no injury history that is worrisome.

plug this guy into our running game and our offense explodes.

Ryan Walters, FS, Colorado. Very smart safety, a team leader and quarterback of the defsense. Only reason his stock is so low is his injury history which is admittedly large. Also highly underrated as an athlete. Did I mention this dude hits like Atwater? We can likely pick him up as an undrafted free agent.

Lawrence Sidbury DE (Richmond)

2008: Selected one of four senior captains.

2007: First Team All-CAA Football... VaSID All-State First Team... Finished second on the team and 15th in the conference in sacks (5.0), while his 8.5 tackles for loss was third on the squad... Played a key role on the defensive line that limited opponents to just 152.5 yards rushing per game... Played and started in 13 games... Missed all of the Appalachian State game and much of the Wofford game with an ankle injury... The opposition rushed for just 130 yards per game with Sidbury on the field... Recorded a season-high six tackles in back-to-back wins over Villanova and Delaware... Was in on five tackles, a sack and forced a fumble in the win over Eastern Kentucky in the NCAA First Round, helping the Spiders limit the ninth-ranked Colonels to just 54 yards rushing.

2006: Played in nine games... Was in on 17 tackles (5.5 for loss) and one sack... Helped a Richmond defense that ranked 21st nationally against the run (115.9 yards/game), 36th against the pass (117.3 yards/game) and 22nd in points allowed (18.09 points/game).

2005: Helped the Spider defense rank fourth in the conference and 38th in the country in total defense (339.3 yd/game)... Was part of a Spider defensive squad which also ranked fourth in the conference and 22nd in the nation against the rush (120.1 yd/game)... Nice call on this one, wayyyyy ahead of time. I read he recently ran a 4.42 on what had been previously considered a "slow track". Blazing for an LB. Maybe he's a good candidate for being converted to safety (a la Lynch)? I'm pulling that out of my ass, b/c I have no idea how his coverage skills, football intelligence, etc. are. But he has amazing measurables.

Unless he slingshotted up a bunch of boards, I was pretty sure he was around 3-5 to begin with. I don't follow all the moves and ****, draft position is like dollar value, whatever someone will pay for it is their position. Mel Kiper is a ****ass.
