Default Gross Signs Shortly

Panthers finalizing deal with Gross

The Carolina Panthers are close to a record-setting agreement with Jordan Gross that would allow them to place their franchise tag on defensive end Julius Peppers.

According to sources, the Panthers and Gross’s representatives are close to finalizing a frontloaded, six-year agreement with Gross that would pay him $30.5 million over the first three years of the deal – the biggest three-year payout ever to an offensive lineman.

Provided that deal gets completed, the Panthers are expected to put their franchise tag on defensive end Julius Peppers later today.

Gross is a good player. It's weird that they front loaded his deal, though.

Why not? Now's the time to do it.....get as much on the books for next year in particular, given that the cap won't be an issue.

It's like I said, Peppers will get tagged. Teams don't let good players go for nothing anymore because the cap is so high. There is no "free agency period" like there used to be anymore. It's all bargain-bin hunting.

I was interested in Peppers if he was a free agent, but I am in no way interested in trading two first round picks for him.

2 first rounders is too steep for pretty much everyone except maybe 1 or 2 players...That is a kings ransom and with as many holes as we have on defense, we can't afford to get rid of our picks...Socal would agree

I would swap them a 1 for a 2 and Peppers. They get a first they are missing and we are still one player heavy. Plus it would offset some of the cash Peppers would require.

It won't be a deal for two first round picks. Likely we could get him for our first and third. I'm a huge Julius Peppers fan, but I wouldn't be willing to give up our 3rd for him, knowing that we'll have to pay him $10m per year. Too bad if they tag him, I really wanted to see him in Denver!

Brown, Maybin, Orakpo, English, and Mathews will get a bump on the Broncos draft board if Peppers gets tagged. Glad we'll find out today so they can focus on those guys during the combine... which they will do either way, but now with the thought process of, "we're probably going to draft one of these guys."

I wouldnt. I think they'll find their asking price is too high if they are looking for two 1's. After all, he's a 29 year old pass rusher who has expressed no desire to play there any more. I think they'd be satisfied with just a number one. If he were the missing piece to a good defense, then id pull the trigger, but not now

Yes, let's go get our own guys. If he's tagged, it would just cost too much.

This is another example of how important it is to find the right players in the draft, it is more important than ever. Remember when the draft had 12 rounds there are good football players that go undrafted every year and the teams that consistently find them and chose wisely with their regular picks will be the perennial winners.

Maybe you should get take over Merrill Hodges spot on ESPN, because that was truly brilliant speculation on your part...

had to probably or he wouldn't sign. Without him signing they lose Peppers for nothing.

Just posted on Rotoworld:

Panthers LT Jordan Gross revealed Thursday that he has completed a multi-year contract to stay in Carolina.
"We're done," he said. Gross' deal is expected to make him the NFL's second highest paid offensive lineman, behind only Dolphins left tackle Jake Long. Gross made his first Pro Bowl last season and was voted first-team All Pro.
