What will it cost us to get Watson from Arizona?

If the team thinks he can be a passable nose for a couple of years, I'd happily give up a mid round pick to get him. Next year's draft should be really nice for DT'S, but you don't want to throw one in as a rookie and expect him to be good.

Get Watson and sign Grady Jackson on a one year deal, they should be passable for a year. Next year draft someone like Cody and allow them to be back-up to Watson for a year or so and then hopefully take over as our long term solution at the position.

I know NT is a massive need, but honestly it doesn't look a good year in the draft. Maybe take a run at a late round guy, but Brace in the 2nd as has been suggested wouldn't be good value IMO when there should be some quality RB's or OLB's available that are far more likely to work out and would also fulfill a need.

When can teams start signing RFA's?

I think its the 27th that FA begins. Next FRI!??!
I am hoping DEN gets Watson too. Hopefully a 3rd and a 5th would work, but i think ARI will ask for a 2nd straight up.

2nd seems a lot to give up, but then with NT such a need maybe Den will bite the bullet.

Maybe a 3rd and then a 2010 3rd on top of that?

We have extra mid-round picks both years anyway so we'd still have the ammo to get things done.

Signing a big name FA would help, but with Suggs off the market only Peppers really makes a whole lot sense and Peppers is surely bound to be tagged today.

Yeah, maybe two 3rds would work. He would be the best bet considering next years class at NT is much stronger than this years. Theres really no true NTs for DEN in the 1st.

why couldn't watson be the long-term answer at NT? he's only 25 and seems to me to be developing into a nice player...if we are going to give up first day picks for a guy I want him to be contributing for more than a year or two

i wouldn't mind bringing in Lorenzo Neal to be our pure blocking FB with Hillis being our primary RB. or Neal as our FB, Hillis as an H-Back and Shonn Greene as our RB.

can you imagine how much pain and damage a backfield like that would inflict on opposing defenses.

If we pickup a FB, it's going to be on the cheap because McDaniels doesn't use them a ton. His old FB from the Pats, Heath Evans, is a FA. Neal would be intriguing as I don't think he'd get anything over the minimum. They may like what they see from Andrew Pinnock as well, and he's already on the roster.

true, but i would love to get back to being really physical in the running game. that was when we were the best. Howard Griffith cracking LB's skulls open and then TD tearing out the souls of the ones Griffith didn't get around to.

instead we have gotten into the finesse running style, trying to use speed instead of strength, which is why i would love to get Neal and have a RB like Hillis or Shonn Greene with size and strength.

Hard to believe but Neal is only a year younger than Griffith.

Maybe we could get Ward without breaking the bank?

WARD READY TO HIT THE MARKET
Posted by Mike Florio on February 19, 2009, 5:02 p.m. EST
With the Giants using the franchise tag on running back Brandon Jacobs, running back Derrick Ward will hit the market.

And hes ready to explore his options elsewhere.

Right now I think Im anxious to see whats out there, Ward said on Wednesdays Jim Rome Is Burning on ESPN (via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News). I feel that I accomplished a lot of my goals this year. I feel that Im a quality starter. I can be a starter on a team. I can help a team win.

And he knows that he wont be the starter in New York.

They just franchised Brandon Jacobs, Ward said. Hes the starter there. Hes their workhorse. Hes the one that sets the tone on the team. I was able to come in after him and do my thing. But I think Im ready to take over that starting role for a team and help a team win.

As the understudy to Jacobs, Ward rushed for 1,025 yards on only 182 carries, for an average of 5.6 yards per carry.

Ward identified the Cardinals, Browns, and Texans as potential destinations because, as he contended, each of those three teams need a running back. (Steve Slaton just called, Derrick. He said you suck. Roasted.)

The Giants have yet to make an offer.

While Ward might envision himself as this years Michael Turner, the reality is that hes going to be 29 later this year. Teams are reluctant to cough up huge money to guys who are pushing 30 especially when they play a position that often results in parts falling off not long into their fourth decade on the planet.

I still expect him to sign for the same team. They'll need to pay him, but I don't think they'll be willing to just let him walk without trying really really hard.

On the other hand, there is probably a team out there that is ready to throw carzy money at him that he just can't turn down.

You haven't seen him play much then because there is no way he lands a 4th or better let alone a 2nd. He had a decent rookie year and has been a lazy underachieveing POS since.

Don't be surprised if Denver tries hard to sign Igor Olshansky, DE, San Diego right out of the gate.

Just a hunch.

I know Olshansky has a history with Denver and talking smack, but this defense needs some prickishness, and he would fill a major hole at one of the defensive end positions....plus stealing from your rivals is just how the AFC West rolls.

You can piss on that whole "he has a bad attitude against our team" or "history this and history that". Players change their tunes as soon as they go to the next team. I remember everybody saying the same thing about Neil Smith. He only came in here and helped us win 2 Superbowls and got along great with everybody on the team.

John Elway "Welcome to the good side"
Neil Smith "Got that right"

see what I mean?
