Denver Broncos' Brian Xanders talks to the media about his new role as the new general manager for the team at Dove Valley in Englewood, Colo. Monday, Feb. 16, 2009. Related LinksVIDEO: Broncos introduce new GM Xadners More Denver BroncosKRIEGER: Bowlen takes back the Broncos LEGWOLD: NFL housecleaning begins Xanders secures Broncos' GM reins More stories » ENGLEWOOD — In his first public comments since being named Broncos general manager, Brian Xanders promised a unified front office that can set the team on a playoff course. And he made it clear he had already taken a hard look at the team's salary cap situation for the upcoming season. Asked Monday if the Broncos could have one player set to count $16 million against the $123 million salary cap as defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson will once the new league year begins Feb. 27, Xanders responded: "No. It's a team sport and one person can't take a huge burden against the existing framework of the salary cap. So we'll try to spread it around and figure it out that way.'' The Broncos will be under the league-mandated cap when free agency opens, but the team looks poised to address some of the bigger cap figures. Players can be asked to renegotiate and often are released if they refuse. The Broncos currently have 18 players slated to count at least $1 million each against the '09 salary cap and 10 of those players are on defense where the Broncos finished at or near the bottom in every major defensive category in 2008. Robertson's bonus-heavy contract leads the way. The next two highest cap figures on the team belong to cornerback Champ Bailey ($13.669 million) and linebacker D.J. Williams ($11.635 million), who are both starters and defensive captains. However, linebacker Niko Koutouvides ($3.062 million), linebacker Jamie Winborn ($2.25 million) and defensive end John Engelberger ($2.185 million) also could face renegotiation or potential release. In a wide-ranging session Xanders also said Broncos owner Pat Bowlen approached him about a potential promotion to general manager only last Thursday. Xanders was formally announced as the team's general manager last Friday. Xanders, who came to the Broncos last season after 14 years with the Falcons, added he had quickly found a kindred spirit in first-year head coach Josh McDaniels in the vision to repair a team that has won just one playoff game since the start of the 1999 season and has missed the postseason in each of the last three years. "We're both competitive, we both have high passion to win football games, we both love this franchise and we both want to do everything we can to help us win,'' Xanders said. "We both realize we have great opportunities and we both want to fulfill those opportunities and do what Mr. Bowlen wants and that's win football games and get him back to the Super Bowl and get the Super Bowl back to the fans |

I am cautiously optimistic about the Colonel's secret recipe for this team.

Not trying to piss anybody off, but I have an honest question. Do you folks feel like Bailey would be worth 13+ million this coming season?

I hate to say it...but Xanders sounds like an idiot! Let's hope he is alot better player evaluater than he is public speaker. Duh, uh...I just want to win games! Why the Hell we didn't go after a real GM when we had the chance is amazing!

Now this is a number that concerns me alot more than Champs does. |

I would love to see what type of value Champ could bring--I do hope that we at least put some feelers out.......as I have written before--having a top tier CB on this defense is like having $15K rims and a $250 Ford Escort to put them on--We need big guys up front desperately.

I think i read somewhere dont quote me on it that says most of the money is from his extension or bonus. so i am sure we are not gonna see the crazy number at the end of his contract. so basically i think its front loaded

I am sure their hearts broke a little during SB XII, XXI, XXII, XXIV, and their love of the Broncos was confirmed with the Back to back SB wins of SB's XXXII and XXXIII! These guys really love the Broncos. I am sure of it not because they draw paychecks but because they really do! I am sure that they wouldn't say the same thing if they worked for KFC or Chuggers or that other team in that hole in either LA or Oakland or where ever. SUPERBOWLS are coming back to the fans! |

i agree, but i would still like to renegotiate his deal and convert some of that into bonus money so we have a little more to work with in the cap.

Leave him be, Keep Bly, coach up the young guys for their replacements down the road. We will need good players somewhere on the D. It is not like we have a lot of guys that can play on this D. |

No. I've been on the trade Champ bandwagon all off-season. However, you're always going to have those guys on a team that have just flat out earned a giant payday through past performance. Even if they can no longer play at a level worthy of that #.
