Default 27atwater's 3-4 WISH LIST MOCK

Athough it's no guarantee, many signs point to Denver switching to a 3-4 defense. With that in mind, here is what I'd like to see happen. This is not prediction, but my personal view of a best case scenario.

First off, I'd like to avoid overspending in FA. I like Chris Canty of Dallas as a 3-4 DE, but there have been reports that he is overvaluing himself. If so, then the Pats have a FA DE as well who could fit the bill in Mike Wright.

Next, I think we should build the D from front to back. I think Barrett and Woodyard at Safety (w/ maybe a FA addition for support) deserve a chance to see what they can do while we build the front 7. I hink Barrett has worlds of potential and Woodyard should be on the field.

So here goes...

ROUND 1
BJ Raji, DT, Boston College
6'1" 323
Experts say the 3-4 starts at the nose an there is none better this year. He may be gone to GB or SF, so I'm listing my contingency plan.

OR
Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
6'5" 290
Still LOVE this guy, even if we do have to "reach a bit". If Raji is gone, Jackson is my guy. Perfect size for a 3-4 DE. Does not have to get to the QB, but can. Big enough to take up blockers.

ROUND 2
LeSean McCoy, RB, Pitt
5'1" 210

Not a certainty to be here for us, but I'd be more than willing to send a late pick in 09 and/or a mid pick in 2010 for the chance to grab him earlier. Kid is the real deal.

ROUND 3
Robert Ayers, DE/OLB, Tennessee
6'3" 270

This guy has made an unexpected jump up the charts, but I still think he lasts til round 3. Round 1 gets us DLine help and round 2 gets us our RB of the future. Round 3 gives us some flexibility. At 6'3", 270, Ayers can play 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB. It appears our current 3-4 OLB options will be projects (Elvis and Moss) and I also believe we have nothing else on the current roster to play 3-4 OLB. A body like Ayers is a must. Again, even if we stay 4-3 for now, he is still a nice fit.

ROUND 4
Worrell Williams, ILB, California
6'0" 250

I like Larsen, but insurance is still needed on the inside. Who better than DJ's 250 pound brother to be that policy? I'm partial to Jasper Brinkley, but he does have an injury history and his availability in round 4 is just not as likely. Worrell does not have DJ's skillset, but he is bulky enough to handle the middle in the NFL.

ROUND 5a
Dorell Scott, DT, Clemson
6'4" 320

I just can't see Terrance Taylor makig it to round 5 and Scott is actually bigger. I'm going w/ the assumption that Raji isn't there for us at 12, but eve if he is, Scott could be depth or try his hand at 3-4 DE.

ROUND 5b
Quan Cosby, WR, Texas
5'11" 205

Older than most rookies (26), but to me tht means he's likely more mature. Had a HUGE game in the Fiesta Bowl vs Ohio State so his stock may rise.

ROUND 6
A.Q. Shipley, C, Penn State
6'1" 297

Since Nalen has retired and our current Center is on the wrong side of 35, this position is a definite need. I know we have the kid from BGU, but he would still need a backup or used as depth at OG. AQ has a nasty streak that this OLine could use. He held down the middle of the PSU line for 4 years and rarely had a bad game. Another late round OLine gem for the Broncos.

ROUND 7
Sammie Lee Hill, DT, Stillman
6'4" 328

NT depth and a project w/ some potential.

Robert Ayers is not a good fit at 3-4 OLB I think, if you think Moss and Dumervil are projects, Ayers is no less of a project.

Both Dumervil and Moss have some experience lining up wide from the Bates experiment, Ayers have none.

But whoever we draft as a 3-4 OLB likely won't have experience either. Eerette Brown looks to be the best suited, but he'll be gone by 12. We will need to take somebody for depth/competition. In addition, he can play 4-3 DE better than Moss if we aren't ready to change over.

lol, Everette Brown seems to be a board favorite, and after watching his video I can see why. At least partially.

However, for everyone down about how Moss has turned out for us, you should know that there are reports that E. Brown is down to 230ish lbs right now. He doesn't project any better to 4-3 end than Moss did/does. Brown certainly has the look of being a productive 3-4 OLB coming into the league, but he will have very little to no utility in the 4-3 his rookie year, I think.

I expect our actual draft will look quite a bit like this one, except hopefully it will involve a trade down to get Tyson Jackson.
I have little hope of Raji or Brown or anyone worthy of our 12th will be there at 12.

Probably true for just about every other 4-3 team in the league, but as smooth as Brown is at that shoulder dip outside rush/spinning inside rush combo, I can see him stepping right into a Colts DE role.

Very nice thread, nicely done.

I agree with the NTs, but I don't think we need 3-4 DEs that badly, we have 3 or 4 decent ones now in Thomas, Ekuban and Peterson.

One of Raji/Brown/Orakpo should be available at 12...if not trading back for Jackson (if those three were gone some solid OTs would still be on the board for a team in need) would by great.
