Default Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman...was this a joke or what?

Anyone see this? Was he serious or was he just sticking it to Letterman by being a dead interview? (I know he quit to do hip hop and all.)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1356864/

more then likely all of this is attempt to make a borat type movie but on a much grander scale....that being said i don't think mr Phoenix is the most "normal" guy out there

Letterman was awesome. Isn't Joaquin trying to destroy his career so his brother can film it? I thought I read that somewhere.

This reminds me of an Andy Kaufman type thing...trying to fool the audience into thinking this guy has lost it.

Whatever it is, it extends beyond the Letterman interview. Read this Q&A:

The reason he always plays the part of ass-holes is because he can't act.

Yes. That's what I had heard. His buddy let it slip about filming a "documentary" about an actor thinking he can just change careers and become a rapper...and it becoming a total disaster. So he's in "character" 24/7 while they are doing this.

Half the time I thought it was serious and the other half I thought it was a joke. At the end of the clip, Joaquin takes of his glasses and begins talking to Letterman. His body language suggested a friendly manner so I'm guessing this is a joke.

I suppose you probably want him arrested on suspicion of being stoned.

That was hilarious.

Always found Joaquin a bit unappealing for some reason, but whatever this is he's up to looks like it has potential.

He was awesome in Walk the Line. IMO that was one of the funniest Letterman interviews I have seen in a long time. Cracked me up what ever it was.
