Default Leigh Bodden or Mike Furrey anyone?

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/...five-starters/

LIONS RELEASE FIVE STARTERS
Posted by Mike Florio on February 9, 2009, 4:45 p.m. EST
The on-field accountability for the worst single season in NFL history has begun, despite the irony that the moves are being made by a front office containing folks who have kept their jobs or received promotions despite the presence of their fingerprints on the sunken hull.

Per Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com, the 0-16 Lions have dumped five starters: cornerback Leigh Bodden, safety Dwight Smith, guard Edwin Mulitalo, receiver Mike Furrey, and tight end Dan Campbell.

The Lions also cut tackle Jon Dunn.

The moves put the Lions $35 million under the salary cap, which will give G.M. Martin Mayhew and team president Tom Lewand an opportunity to show what they’ve learned from their front-row seats to the Matt Millen morass.

So when we joke about the Lions possibly drafting receiver Michael Crabtree with the first overall pick, why do we have a weird feeling that the move isn’t nearly as implausible at it might seem?

both would provide decent depth but we'd be in trouble if we were counting on consistent production from either.

Furrey would be a good pickup, a very Stokely-like player.

Furrey in 2006 had 98 receptions for 1086 yards and 6 tds, In 2007 61 receptions for 664 yards 1 td, and in 2008 18 rec for 181 yards and 0 td, but missed a big chunk of the season. Considering the lack of consistency in Detroit, his stats are not that bad.

Leigh Bodden is a very solid #2 CB--younger than Bly and if he would come cheaper I would relish the opportunity to replace Dre' with Leigh.

Regarding Furrey, Stokley is one hit/awkward fall on his head away from retirement. While Furrey certainly isn't a long term solution for our slot WR, he certainly would be excellent depth--adding experience and solid production to our WR corp. He also can play ST's

Yes, please. Both, please, for all of the reasons listed above!

Hidden in all of this... isn't Dwight Smith a decent cover safety? Could he be any worse than what we already have? And yes, that includes Barrett..

Smith is a lil' older and flourished in the cover 2. He's not a priority IMHO but to be honest, who wouldn't be an upgrade to our current roster at Safety?

Dwight smith is not anything more than average and can be a pain in the ass off the field...i'd say pass on him. we can do better in the draft or other FA options

I guarantee there will be at least a half dozen corners of Bodden quality or better, and probably 8-10 WRs as good or better than Furrey once training camp cuts start happening.

We need two new safeties, that's all i know. And i don't care who they are, they better keep their nose clean.. that goes for anyone we pick up. We need to NOT bring in any thugs, clowns, or a-holes.

By the way, i remember a couple years ago when we played the Browns during the regular season.. i went over to a Browns forum and they were claiming that Leigh Bodden was better than Champ Bailey and that it was just a matter of time before everyone else knew it too..

heheh

Pick up Furrey, whether he wants to ply WR or go back to Safety, we'll see what happens in pre-season, either way he's a VERY useful/versatile guy to have playing on your team!!!
