VERY STRANGE: Dan Reeves and Jerry Jones part ways because of time clock

Didn't see a thread on this, but it's worthy of one ...

Very strange .... Dan Reeves and Jerry Jones could not come to an agreement, and Dan Reeves'
place in the Cowboys front office - a match seemingly made in football heaven - is over before it
could really begin.

What was the sticking point? Job duties ... authority ... job title ... pay? None of the above.
The sticking point was that Reeves didn't want to punch a time clock!

Dan Reeves said he objected to having a clause put in his contract about the amount of hours he was
to work at Valley Ranch. Thus, his employment with the Cowboys was short-lived.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones and Reeves agreed in principle to a multi-year
deal that was supposed to start Monday, but the former Cowboys assistant coach and player did not
know about the clause.

"Oh, definitely, big-time," Reeves said when asked if he was surprised by the clause. "For someone to
question how I've done [my time] for a lot of years, I've never been questioned. Plus, as a coach,
how can you verify that? Nobody punches a clock."

When Reeves said he couldn't sign such a contract, he and Jones declined to work together. Each
expressed respect, a fondness for one another and a desire to work together in the future if an
opportunity arises.

Jones said he and Reeves were on the same page about commitment hours-wise, but the Cowboys owner
wanted it in writing. "You don't work 23 years in this business whatsoever with some kind of work ethic,"
Reeves said. "To me, why would you want it in there? A contract should be like a handshake anyway."

Reeves said he was going to work with all aspects of the organization – specifically with Jones,
Phillips and the offensive coaches. Reeves started work Monday, attended meetings and was in the
process of looking at the passing game. "It didn't work out," Jones said. "It's a sticking point for both
of us and we both regret it, but it just didn't work out."

This is TOO BAD! I had this crazy idea that Reeves would be GM, Jason Garrett
would get hired elsewhere, and they'd be compelled to demote Wade to Assistant
HC/Defense, and bring Mike Shanahan in as head coach. That way, when the Cowboys
come to Invesco this year, it would be Reeves/Wade/Shanahan in charge

That must be a typo - it's 43 years since hge was a Cowboys rookie, not 23.

That is a huge insult to Reeves. I cant blame him for voiding any dealings with Jones. I would want Jones to pay me overtime if he insist to use a timeclock!

Reality though, I dont' see what Reeve's issue is. Is he so special that he doesn't need to punch a clock? What's the harm? Millions of people punch a clock in and out every day.

They were saying on the local radio here (they interviewed Reeves last night on the same station) that Wade was excited to bring in Reeves because he doesn't trust Jason Garrett. Ruh roh.

I've mentioned that scenario to every Cowboys fan I know here. You know, it used to be the other way around where former Cowboys were easily found on the Broncos staff/squad.

Management does not punch a clock. Not in any place I have ever seen. I have not had anyone look at my hours for over 10 years. I wish they would though, Maybe I could get out of work on time for once.

i would have told Jones the same thing ..........pound sand baby I am out of here ...........HC isnt an hourly wage pay , it is Salary , what Jones is saying is , I dont trust you to be honest enough about the hours you will be putting in

I hear ya, but there is a real difference between a written contract/understanding and micromanaging someone. Jones is a idiot for this crap. Good for Reeves.

He must be obsessing over the Dan Snyder/Steve Spurrier situation a few years back in Washington. If there were ever a coach that needed such a clause in his contract, it was that guy.

I still think this is so very strange, it must be a smokescreen. Reeves did comment that there was strife within about TO, whether to keep him or not, and Reeves voted to waive the guy. My guess is that is a more likely reason for this not working than a time clock ...

You're joking right? Reeves is a professional. I'm sure he would have worked 60-100 hours a week for the Cowboys. This is a huge disrespect issue.

No coaches or GMs in the NFL punch a clock. That is ridiculous.

That's a low ball move for Reeves to share that kind of detail. He must have been very upset over the parting.
