On October 1, 1993, Hicks was scheduled to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman for the twelfth time, but his entire performance was removed from the broadcast -- the only occasion, up to that point, in which a comedian's entire routine had been cut after taping. Both the show's producers and CBS denied responsibility. Hicks expressed his feelings of betrayal in a hand-written, 39-page letter to John Lahr of The New Yorker.[8] Although Letterman later expressed regret at the way Hicks had been handled, he never appeared on the show again. The full account of this incident was featured in a New Yorker profile by Lahr. This profile was later published as a chapter in John Lahr's book, Light Fantastic.[9]

Mary Hicks is scheduled to appear on "The Late Show" on Friday, January 30, 2009, with ads for the show indicating Letterman will show at least some of the censored Hicks appearance.[10]

Bill Hicks wasnt funny. I dont know what people saw in him. Dennis Leary is better and even if its true that Leary stole Hicks' bit, Leary does it better than Hicks did.

Thank you for posting this. Hicks truly was ahead of his time, and I feel bad for anyone who just doesn't get him. It's amazing to listen to his stuff now, still so relevant after 15 years.

ps, in case anyone cares... I discovered Bill after buying Tool's Anemia album. There is a painting of him in the liner notes titles "Another dead hero" Several of the songs on that album are based on Bill's routines.

Ahh, a Bill follower.

Hix fanboys are among the most cultish of any entertainment cultish followers. They adamantly refuse to acknowledge the fact that Hicks wasnt funny, that he only appealed to left wing nutjobs and far left socialists, which is why he failed as a comedian to get national attention and only has a small, albeit dedicated following of groupies.

And Leary does do it better. Leary does the angry comic routine better than Hix ever could dream of doing.

I always thought Hicks was great, but it's certainly edgy stuff. I'm actually suprised that Alec doesn't like him. He seems to share a lot of personality traits with Bill.

The weakness of Bill's comedy (if you can really call it comedy) was how hate filled it was. Bill wasn't just annoyed - he seemed to genuinely hate other people. It put a damper on some of his bits.

Hicks to me was one way i always kinda how i judged people .
If you was into history , current events and real life issues that you understand the jokes and are smart enough to know what he is talking about , then you are the kinda person I want to talk to ... IF you like weak ass comics , dick jokes , typical sap bit humor you are most likely to stupid for me to hang out with .

They pulled that bit in the 90s do to the fact the same night a Pro life group was paying for ads on that nights show ... It was money ... and most likely NBC's call not Dave to pull the bit ....

Meh, that was some of Hicks' weaker stuff. I know you can't put some of his stuff on TV but I was expecting better than that.

I didn't think it was too bad for TV fare. He certainly has better stuff though.

He softened a lot of it for TV at nbc's request and then they still F'ed him over and cut it from the show ....

During the joke about Jesus not coming back cause we are still wearing crosses he removed part of it . He didn't do the actual punch line to the whole bit which is Do you think Jesus wants to ever see a cross again ? It's like going up to Jackie Onassis wearing a sniper rifle pendant. ... and saying just thinking of John .. which is way funnier ...

the truth, you don't agree with his politics, so you react way off base and ignore his talent because of this.
