Default McDaniels adds receivers coach, closing in on offensive coordinator

McDaniels adds receivers coach, closing in on offensive coordinator
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post

Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels continued to fill out his first staff Saturday by adding receivers coach Adam Gase, and continuing to work toward hiring Mike McCoy as his new offensive coordinator and Ed Donatell as secondary coach, according to NFL sources.

Gase, 30, replaces Jedd Fisch as mentor to Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall, who gave the Broncos one of the NFL's top receiving duos in 2008. Gase was groomed the past two years by renowned offensive guru Mike Martz. This past season, Gase and Martz were offensive coaches for the San Francisco 49ers and head coach Mike Nolan, who is now the Broncos' defensive coordinator.

Donatell, 51, is expected to coach the Broncos' secondary. It's the same position Donatell coached here from 1995-99 on Mike Shanahan's staff. He spent the next seven seasons (2000-06) as defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons. Last season, Donatell was defensive coordinator for the University of Washington.

To date, Broncos assistant coaches are Nolan, Donatell, Mike Priefer (special teams), Rick Dennison (offensive line), Bobby Turner (running backs), Gase and Rich Tuten (strength and conditioning).

With Dennison moving from run-game offensive coordinator to offensive line coach, and the Broncos not retaining quarterbacks coach and passing-game coordinator Jeremy Bates, McDaniels needs an offensive coordinator.

According to an NFL source, McDaniels, who will call the plays as he did the previous two years with the New England Patriots, has zeroed in on McCoy, the Carolina Panthers' passing-game coordinator/quarterbacks coach. McDaniels has interviewed McCoy, a former Broncos' undrafted free-agent quarterback, who has spent his entire nine-year NFL coaching career with the Panthers.

I'm surprised to see Tuten on the staff after a horrible season of injuries....many of which could be argued as conditioning and flexibility issues.

mcdaniels is running the offense in full, he will basically be an assistant to him in that department, whereas the defense will likely be in control of teh DC. we dont need a bluechip OC, we need someone who can assist in running everything.

the redskins exploded twice as badly as the broncos did this year. we sucked from week 4 on, barely escaping in nearly every one of the wins this year. redskins started good until they decided to have jason campbell throw 35 times a game.

GET TUTEN OUT OF HERE!

For God's sake, fire that guy. We have the worst strength and conditioning in the league.

Why did we get rid of Jedd Fisch? He was doing a brilliant job.

Why would you say that?

On a side note I like the signing on Donatell. I mean he made Ray "pull my hammy after giving up a big play" Crockett and Darren Gorden.

The Broncos had a Yoga Instructor on staff last year for the first time (or maybe it was the dude's first season). I met him last year at camp. Can't remember his name, but he is also the Yoga Instructor for the CU Buffs. So we can blame Yoga for all the injuries last year!!!

Really? How many WRs have we seen develop under Fisch? Counting Marshall and Royal, I count two.

Well you can argue anything that doesn't mean it's a good argument.

Rich came on in 1995 and seemed no one complained when we had almost no injuries during the 96-98 seasons when we were very good.

Other NFL teams have copied Tutens offseason regimen and he is well respected in his field.

People blaming these injuries on Tuten is a total joke.

Tuten is a good strength coach, has credentials and a very successful record of getting players into shape.

Too many dropped balls I would say to say brilliant job. We have to understand there are certain coaches McDaniels want's and he is going to get them.

Just be happy he kept turner and dennisson.

I agree here. We've had a few bad injury years but also a few where we had almost no injuries. I think the soft practices had more to do with it than Tuten.

both the eagles and cards are passing first type teams and they are doing alright. Not saying we won't pass more, but i think we will play to our strengths and this is becoming a passing league. (i think we still need a strong running game to win games)

True. Kind of like blaming the receiver's coach for dropped balls.
