Default Share your vision for the 3-4

I have to admit that I kind of like the move to the 3-4. I would have rather had Spags. But having said that, I like the different advantages that the 3-4 offers. And its kind of fun to think about what the roster will look like on opening day. So, I thought it would be kind of entertaining for people to share their vision by filling in the lineup. Fill in the name of the person you would like to see at each position:

RDE -
NT -
LDE -
OLB -
ILB -
ILB -
OLB -
CB -
CB -
FS -
SS -

Feel free to include draft prospects and free agents.

That's pretty scary. But how does Jarvis Moss get on the field?

Fun fun:
In my universe we couldn't afford Suggs

RDE - Crowder (if the new staff deemed him worth keeping); if not, then Shaun Cody
NT - Gabe Watson; backed up by Ron Brace who we got in the second, and a newly fatter Carlton Powell
LDE - Thomas, backed up by Nic Clemons
OLB - Everette Brown; Jarvis Moss rotating until a clear leader emerges
ILB - Larsen
ILB - Woodyard! (can you believe it? he beat out our mid round rookie Jasper Brinkley, it was intense)
OLB - DJ
CB - Champ
CB - Josh Bell (we're not totally comfortable with this, but Dre Bly was let go because he wouldn't take a pay cut)
FS - OJ Atogwe
SS - David Bruton (drafted him mid round, and he beat out Barrett in training camp)

Crowder is a big if.
I hate to act like a crazy person, but that might be what I'm about to do:

Assuming his problems are coaching and not simply being useless, what about Crowder at one of the OLB spots? Also, would Dumervil be worth considering at one of the ILB spots? I have no idea if either have the skill set necessary.

I think that the more positions we can fill with players currently on the roster, the more flexible we can be in FA and the draft, which, I think, will result in a better overall team next season.

Dumervil inside seems like a big waste of some quality edge pass rusher skills, plus it demands more of his weak points (coverage and the like) than OLB in a 3-4 does.

Crowder at OLB though, I'm honestly betting on it at this point. Mike Nolan was the DC when Adalius Thomas came up through the ranks in Baltimore, wouldn't be surprised at all if he turns Crowder into a poor man's Thomas.

Physically, Crowder is pretty much right between Adalius Thomas and Willie McGinest.

I have rationale for this in the draft forum, but here is my group (including draft picks).

So, my starting lineup on defense in 2009 would be:

DE - Tyson Jackson, LSU
NT - Terrance Taylor, Michigan
DE - Kenny Peterson

OLB - Michael Johnson, Georgia Tech
ILB - Dannell Ellerbe, Alabama
ILB - DJ or Larsen (let them compete)
OLB - Suggs

FS - Atogwe
SS - Barrett

CB - Bailey
CB - Bly

RDE - Thomas
NT - Colin Cole/Gabe Watson/Shaun Cody
LDE - Peterson
OLB - Crowder/Moss/Dumervil
ILB - Larsen
ILB - DJ
OLB - Crowder/Moss/Dumervil
CB - Champ
CB - Bly
FS - Oshiomogho Atogwe
SS - Barrett

I figure like this, we sign Atogwe and one or two of the DTs I have listed. That way, we have all the positions filled before the draft, allowing us to go BPA. I'd hate for us to go into the draft knowing that we have to fill a position. For instance, say Curry falls to #12. I'd hate to miss him because we feel that we must take Raji to field a halfway competent defense.

Who is Ziggy Hood? As for the rest of your lineup... AMAZING! Really like the idea of Atogwe roaming in our defensive backfield. I suggested Brinkley, and Raji as well!

Who are you targeting in round 2 in this scenario? Shonn Greene? What about Fili Moala, considering his size, he might be an ideal fit for a 3-4 DE?

They could try Crowder at OLB, but I'm afraid he isn't fast enough to play there. Adalius Thomas he isn't. Thomas has the speed to even play some safety, which at times the Ravens did and had coverage ability. I'm not seeing Crowder with that skill.

But whatever they do, the players on defense need whatever skills they have maximized and that hasn't happened for years.

His combine numbers are very close and he showed good speed in the open field for us and for UT in college.

His combine numbers are also pretty much dead on with Suggs' and he's nearly 20 pounds heavier, FYI.

He's got the athleticism and the speed. The chances he has Thomas' awareness where he can play OLB, ILB, DE, and even occasionally drop in coverage like a safety are basically zero, but Nolan has shown he can turn raw talent into a good LB before, its entirely possible he can do the same with Crowder.

I'm not saying he's a slam dunk, but don't be surprised if come OTAs Crowder is lining up at ILB or OLB instead of DE.
