What numbers are you looking at? Nolan's defensive rankings go down almost every year.

I love the way McDaniels saved this past year for the NE defense after Brady went down, though .... wow.

Seems solid enough, barring the 49ers years!

Maybe showing a great D coordinator does not a head coach make... Spags.

thats what ive been trying to say for all the spags-or-doom people. everyone we picked is a question mark, mcdaniels at age 32 seems to have all his cards together, its pretty amazing we got him so young. some writer said bowlen is willing to give him some down years in order to get teh job down, so if it takes 2-3 years to get it together, so be it.

Didn't they switch from 4-3 to 3-4 as well that year?

Exactly what I was going to point out... It's all about personnel, which we don't have. The right guys would have made Slowik look like a genius this year.

This still may indicate the role they have in evaluating talent, but I think an absolute miracle maker gives us a ~15 ranked D next year.

While its been addressed in fragments here, what basically happened was that in '02 Nolan took over as DC, they dropped a lot of the core veterans for salary cap reasons, and then proceeded to get hit with a lot of pretty bad injuries.

It was basically a perfect storm of suck, the fact that they managed to mount a ~20th defense in the league is honestly more impressive to me than the two ~6th ranked D's they had the following years. That team could've packed it in like our D basically did this year and that never happened. To me that speaks very highly for how Nolan coached them.

As for his other stops that people will question, he was in Washington at the height of Dan Snyder's meddling douche baggery and he ran a pretty straight 4-3 there because Snyder never gave him the talent to legitimately transition to the 3-4 or an effective hybrid.

In SF, what can you say? The guy sucks at being a GM. He's recognized some good defensive talent but he made arguably the worst offensive selection of this decade (Alex Smith #1 overall) and he basically kept trying to find an OC he could turn the offense over to completely.

I don't think Nolan makes a good HC at this point at least. He definitely doesn't make a good HC/GM double duty guy. But as a DC? He's shown some good success and he's very knowledgeable about that side of the ball in all phases. Especially at bringing along linebackers, he's helped develop some real studs. From his time here under Reeves/Collier, to Baltimore where he coached up Terrell Suggs from a 4-3 DE into a great OLB and Adalius Thomas from a 6th round pick to a do everything superman, and most recently in SF with how quickly he didn't just get solid play out of Patrick Willis, but instead made him into a perennial pro-bowl contender.

As for McDaniels, I know people like to rag on his age, but he's actually been a coordinator longer than Spagnuolo has, and if you figure in '05 when by all accounts he was calling the plays for the Pats on game day you could make the argument that he's got twice as much time in that level of coaching.

Probably something similar to his job in NE. Asst. Head Coach - Defense with a focus on the secondary.

Goose retired after 2000 I think. Seems like Ray Lewis had a down year or was injured or something. I know that is when the talk about the big guys up front making it possible for him b/c such a big issue.

And guys like Woodson retired.

In 1995 the Giants also had the worst offense in their history. They scored 20 TD's on the year and Brown was sacked 40+ times his two seasons as a starter. They were awful.

Also, Nolan wasn't defensive coordinator in 2001, he was the receivers coach. Nolan helped retool the team after their super bowl and got them back in shape. That doesn't trend down, either.

The good news is, we get to test out our theory.

A Cutler lead offense (top 3) with an "at least average" (ranked 10-15) defense should make us a really strong, playoff worthy team.

Nolan has proven he can create an above average, if not really good, defense.

A 15th ranked defense that gets Phillip Rivers off the field on third down would have me howling for joy. It's been a long time since we could rush the passer and close the deal on third downs.
