Default New Coach Would Be Wise To Leave Offense Alone

Word came out that the Broncos are going to 'urge' the new Head Coach to keep 6 existing assistant coaches from the current staff. This is not entirely a financial decision since all the Broncos assistants were under contract for 2009 and most have been shown the door. What it is, however, is wise thinking by Pat Bowlen, and whoever does finally win the Broncos sweepstakes would be wise to take Bowlen's urging under advisement.

There is nothing wise about hamstringing a brand new head coach by telling him he has to play with the guys the owner want to coach. Very poor decision by Pat to do this. If you say you believe in a guy to coach your team, then let HIM coach your team.

It's very Al Davis-esque.

Can't think of any other owner ever doing that (although it's p'bly happened).

"Word came out that the Broncos are going to 'urge' the new Head Coach to keep 6 existing assistant coaches from the current staff."

Word came out? WTF does that mean? That is so vague that it's hard to take this news seriously.

Who said this?

The Broncos' new head coach will be encouraged to keep six assistant coaches left over from Shanahan's staff. According to two NFL sources, the Broncos have sent termination notices to the league office for all assistants except Dennison, Jeremy Bates (quarterbacks), Jedd Fisch (receivers), Bobby Turner (running backs), Bill Johnson (defensive line) and Rich Tuten (strength and conditioning).

I think it's highly likely that at least Tuner will follow Shanahan to wherever he lands next. I would say Dennison as well, but assuming he remains our OC in title, I'm not sure how Mike promotes him.... assistant HC maybe.

hasn't Turner turned down promotions from other teams before? I wonder if that was becasue of Shanahan, or that he is comfortable in Colorado.

That is the interesting question in all of this....If Shanny stays out for 2009, which it appears he will, these guys will likely be back and then will have an interesting decision once Shanny gets another gig.

Only Bates is signed past 2009, so the others will be free to leave anyway.

That's the problem with your blog entry. The writer of your piece assumed the reader already knew what was going on.

I hadn't seen the Denver Post story regarding the assistants until after I read yours.

Thanks for the kind words. I have permission to link to some articles as well as to when MHR Radio is on. There is no negative intent. I donate to OM and participate in the Survivor during the offseason(actually won a couple years ago). I'm not in competition with OM, more like a partner in Broncos Fandom.

I think that writting is on the wall. We are hiring a defensive coach. We even left him someone to fire, Bill Johnson. That should get people in line. I hope they chose soon, or at least narrow it down to 2 or 3 guys.

So its my fault you aren't up to speed? Listen, you can choose to trust what I say or not, that is ok and I completely understand that MHR isn't the DP or RMN. All I can say is I'm not a rumor monger, nor am I looking for attention. I am just an avid Broncos fan that has a Fan Site.

The Bill Johnson part was curious to say the least. There are rumors out there that he is going to Seattle and other places and the only thing I can think of is the Broncos want to have some say on when and where he leaves.

Another possibility is some of the candidates want him retained. I'd have to look at their backgrounds to see if any of these guys crossed paths before.

I don't have a problem so much with the content or even the spamming, just the poster's participation on this site. If Sports Guru was more involved in the discussions here, it wouldn't even be considered spamming.

Go back and look at his post history, Sports Guru doesn't post on any thread, other than the ones he started himself regarding his own blog.

That's because I run my own site. It takes alot of time. I just share my opinions here from time to time and like I said, play survivor. Guys like you are the reason. My 'POST COUNT' dictates my Broncos Intelligence? My 'POST COUNT' dictates how knowledgeable of a fan I am? My 'POST COUNT' determines my validity here?

Come on.

Again, I have permission, I don't abuse it, and if anyone doesn't like it they don't have to click through.

Up to speed? That story broke this morning! It would have been nice if your writer did a better job of clarifying the circumstances regarding "the assistant" situation.

He barely touches on the assistant situation, just dives right into a two-page rant on why he thinks it's a good idea.

Just constructive criticism. If you want to improve your material or not, it's up to you.

Thanks for the criticism. I do a "breaking news" piece every morning with links which is why I didn't dive deeper on that specific point. My focus was simply that the Broncos had a pretty damn good offense, and there are examples in the recent past(Pittsburgh and Baltimore) of coaches that came in and left incumbent coaches stay on the job with positive results.
