Good options but I'm still stuck in the middle. Part of me knows that we need change and that change could either be a good thing or really implode on us. I think I would have been fine giving Shanny this year to improve the defense and see what he got out of it. No or little improvement and he was gone. On the other hand, I think this speeds up the process a little bit. Bowlen had lost faith in Shanny the personnel man. That hurt us last year in free agency as much as anything. Mistakes like Travis Henry and Javon Walker prevented us from making moves for players like Kris Jenkins and Shaun Rogers. With a new regime in place it increases our odds of a player like Peppers, Haynesworth, or Suggs.

Worse. Hearing about how the Cards were hosting their first playoff game since 1947 made me realize how rare good teams are.

14 seasons, 7 playoff appearances. That's rare.

Let's see: The home field advantage of Mile High is dead. The Broncos just made NFL history by being the first team to flush a three game lead in their division and drop out of the playoffs. We watched a horrible Chefs team put an 11 minute, 90 yard drive on our asses for a TD, oh, and the Faders, one of the worst teams in football, came into our house and kicked our asses. Mike? Here's your hat. What's your hurry?

I can totally understand where the owner is coming from, I just think this is something he should have down 3 seasons ago, or two seasons from now.

I don't think we'll be able to do too much in FA. Carolina isn't going to let Peppers get away. Haynesworth will be out of the park in terms of ROI, and I don't see Suggs leaving Baltimore either. I just hope we get a coach that takes it on the chin and goes to a 3-4. If you look at our opponents next season, it's obviously going to be near impossible to get into the playoffs again. I say switch to the 3-4 and cut our teeth on an already difficult LOOKING season

Well. On a long enough time line, everybody is right. I mean heck, getting rid of Chuck Knoll was a great decision....16 years later.

I was pissed when it happened, but maybe it was time for a change.
Losing to two of the worst teams in football (KC and OAK) couldn't have helped.
If Shanahan lost his job over retaining Slowik, then he deserved to go.

My ''gut'' tells me that we'll have our next coach for 32 games (and ''gut'' decisions so totally rock).

QFT! Add our usual late season swoons and redzone troubles to the list.

I'd rather wait until I see the complete coaching set up, then make an initial judgement.

Maybe after 2 seasons I'll tell you my complete thoughts, after 2 drafts, 2 free agencies and 32 or more games.

Afterall Shanahan got 14 each of those did he not

Its been a week, and i still am not 100% sure why shanny was truly fired.
Was there a final verdict?
Was it because he wanted to retain Slowdick?
Was it because he just lost the respect of the players and staff?
Was it because he lost so many damn games to horrid teams?
What was it really?
IF! The main decision was because Shanny told Bowlen to pound sand when Bowlen told him to fire Slowdick, i cannot blame Bowlen. I just cant. If thats the case, then Shanny deserves whatever Bolwen decided. Then this whole thing is on Shanny. I cant blame Bowlen then. Cant do it. Its all on Mike and Mike has no one to blame but himself 100% for his firing.
If its not this issue then i am still on the fence.

It depends on who Bowlen hires. While I had my concerns and greivances with Shanahan, Im starting to question Bowlen.

It's a decision that had to be made. Could you guys imagine seeing another pathetic attempt by Shanny/Slowick to improve this sad defense?

As far as feelings for the future I'd imagine we'll win a playoff game and have a real shot at the SB in the next 10 years. That really is the sad bench mark we're dealing with.

Until the new coach is selected we're all in the dark though. I still think Cowher may surface. The guy just didn't go fishing after he was talking to the Jets.

I don't think moving to a 3-4 necessarily requires the next regime to "take it on the chin" really.

Our front seven has one good linebacker (DJ), one pass rushing specialist DE who is too small for every down duty (Dumervil) and one promising but inconsistent DT (Thomas). Other than that its a couple of rookies and second year guys who might be good some day and a bunch of scrubs. We were the 30th defense in the league last year. We got basically no place to go but up.

I would hate to see Cowher spitting and drooling on the Broncos' sidelines. I've never liked that guy.

I was kinda on the fence before, but have changed into the "a change had to be made" catagory. If they hire Spagoo or Morris I'll be happy....if it's McDaniels or Dennison, then I won't be. Someone defensively minded must be brought in or there's gonna be very lean years ahead methinks.

Absolutely, positively the correct think to do. As Pat said, 14 years was a long time and over the last 10 seasons--1 division title, 1 playoff win--this isn't KC or SD. That is not acceptable. We are BETTER than that. We WERE the envy of our division for almost 30 years..both Shanny and Dan Reeves had the largest part in that and I am very thankful for both. But it was time.

I was on a cruise for the last 7 days trying to relax. My first day on was the loss in SD and then I found out a couple days later shanny was canned. ARGH. I was pissed to say the least.

I was able to root Denver on with a couple other fans on the cruise ship and when the news came out we all magically found each other on the ship and were all equally distressed by the firing. way to go bowlen.

After watching Trevor Pryce, Bertrand Berry, and Foxworth play this weekend... I have to be honest, I think it was the right decision. We've had a lot of talent slip out the door (and it shows).

Is it because of his insistence on a new stadium with higher ticker prices and a very sanitary feel to it? Unfortunately, outside of GB, that is the new direction of the NFL....

It was and still is a major mistake. One that we are going to pay for over the next 3-5 years.
