Default Mortensen 1/3/09 Broncos Coaching Search Update

Chris Mortensen of ESPN was just on SportsCenter to give his update on the Broncos coaching search. He said Pat Bowlen's preference is to hire a defensive coach and to keep Jeremy Bates in place to run the offense. Mort reported that while Steve Spagnuolo is the hot name in NFL circles, Raheem Morris is a real sleeper for the position. Most interestingly, Mort reported that Bowlen is looking to take 4-5 weeks to make his decision.

People aren't going to sit around and wait for you to make your decision Pat when there are other spots open for these guys to take.

I'm sure that's how long he'd like to take. But does anybody honestly think he's going to sit on his ass? If he has to make it sooner he'll do it.

That timetable might be out there since Spags can't be offered a position until the Giants are eliminated. Doesn't the SB take us 4-5 weeks down the road?

Yeah because a decision in less than a week would be better

out of the jobs open Denver is the best so if you want to become a HC you might as well wait with us.

If Bowlen is waiting 4-5 weeks, he's waiting for Steve Spagnuolo.

The thing about Mortensen is that he speculates so often that its hard to tell what is actual information and what is his conjecture. Its probably someone at E!SPN pressuring him to throw stuff against the wall, but it makes it hard to discern what is actual information. "Watch our for Raheem Morris" ...what is that all about?

ASAP means as soon as possible. If Spags is teh guy, then it may well be 5 weeks before its possible to hire him.

exactly what i was thinking. Let him tell you about the sleeper pick then Spags is the last one standing and he gets him by default....BRILLIANT!

Let it go, Shany is gone, now it's time to just let the process work.

The smartest thing to do when looking to hire a new employee is to look at a large base of candidates and select the best fit from that base.

Also let's not forget that the Broncos opening is the best available. If you where a coordinator and where in the mix for the Denver job would you wait or would you take a lesser job with Detroit, Jets, Rams, Browns. Those jobs are Division II of the NFL...Detroit may even be CFL rated.

I want the best coach, I want a coach that wants this job, so if there is a guy out there that wants the job then he will wait for this job. But if a coach wants one of the lesser spots in the NFL and have a 2-3 year job... so be it. That person deserves to suffer with those teams and poor ownership.

If Spagnuolo is the man, then we wait to get our man and look around at other options. Maybe another option will be more impressive than Spags and makes waiting for him less of a need.

Mike Tomlin was a coach that the Steelers had low on their list. He blew them away we he meet the front office and ownership.

So Broncos fans have to have some patience and let the best man win.

This isn't about filling a spot in the mail room. It's about find the new leader of this franchise for the next 10 years.

Sounds to me like Pat feels like there may be some deep runs with the likes of Spags, Frazier, Schwartz, and even Rex Ryan. It also sounds like Bowlen expects guys like McDaniel and Morris to be available in several weeks if that's the direction he wants to go.

It's a bad idea for the owner to determine who the next head coach has on his staff. That forces the new guy to play with somebody elses hand rather than his own. If this is true it signals that the new coach will not have anything close to Shanahan's power in the organization. Bowlen needs to let the next coach make his own decision on his staff.

Mortensen is the original sphagetti tosser. Does Bowlen have a curveball in the mix? Five weeks isn't that big of a deal, most new coaches use the offseason to get their staff assembled anyway. Still, itchy prospects aren't going to wait that long. Makes me think he's going after a known commodity rather than new blood.
