Bowlen to keep Cutler in loop about coach search
The Denver Post
Posted: 01/01/2009 12:30:00 AM MST

Concerned that his franchise quarterback was upset regarding the firing of coach Mike Shanahan, Cutler received a phone call Wednesday from Broncos owner Pat Bowlen. Indications were Cutler would be kept abreast of the coaching search.

"Obviously, he's the man around here now, so I will be talking to Jay," Bowlen said.

Cutler might have vowed to not watch the NFL playoffs, but he was watching football Wednesday.

Cutler traveled to Nashville, Tenn., to watch Vanderbilt, his alma mater, play in the Music City Bowl. The Commodores beat Boston College 16-14 for the school's first bowl victory in 53 years.

Earlier in the day, Cutler spoke on the phone to Shanahan.

.

What's next for Shanahan?
He has been at least indirectly contacted by the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns about their coaching openings. The Browns, though, may be getting ready to hire New England general manager Scott Pioli, who has his own ideas about a head coach. And the Jets' situation would be considered difficult for any experienced coach because of the constant uncertainty surrounding the future of Brett Favre.

"I'm not going to make any decisions whether it be this year, next year, two years from now," Shanahan said. "I'll sit back and get away for a couple weeks and look at your options and opportunities and go from there."

Elway speaks on Shanahan.

Former Broncos quarterback John Elway issued a comment on the firing of Shanahan through opensports.com.

"There's an old saying that the NFL stands for Not For Long," Elway said in a statement. "But Mike lasted a long time, 14 years to be exact. That's an eternity in this day and age of the NFL and speaks to all of his achievements and success. . . .

"I want to thank him for all of his wisdom that he imparted on me. Mike was an integral part of my success and I will always value the lessons he taught me."

Player witnesses.

Running back Michael Pittman, long snapper Mike Leach and receiver Brandon Marshall were the only three players who attended the news conference in which Bowlen addressed the firing of Shanahan.

"It was impressive they went together like they did," Leach said of Shanahan following Bowlen to the podium. "I thought they showed a lot of dignity and class. I'm a little worried about the guys walking past us right now."

He was referring to the Broncos' assistant coaches, all of whom are under contract at least through 2009, but were told following the news conference they could seek employment elsewhere.

Family considerations.

After Shanahan's brief meeting with Bowlen on Tuesday, he returned home to see his wife Peggy, daughter Krystal, and Krystal's fiance. Those three, as well as son Kyle, the Texans' offensive coordinator, were all sympathetic, Shanahan said.

"They understand the business, they understand how tough it is, they understand how I felt being in positions to let somebody go," Shanahan said. "They understand how tough it was on me, so they can relate to what Pat had to go through last night."

Yeah he said that in the press conference. Said that he talked to Cutler and he understands the business side and will be kept in the loop.

I drove by Dove Valley today. A lot of cars in the player/personnel department parking lot. Plugging away finding the new coach.

It's been reported that Cutler told Bowlen he is ok with any coach that is hired just as long as he will still be able to listen to his ipod on the sideline.

Who cares? This is just to prevent another Jay Cutler whinny ass quote from showing up on the ESPN Ticker Scroll.

Jay needs to worry about taking the steps to ensure he's still a Bronco in 3 years.

That sounds like an answer to whether Bates, Turner, Dennison, etc...stay on or not.

Like him or not but our success revolves around Jay Cutler. That said it only makes sense that he will probably be the first player to know when we choose a new coach. He IS the face of the franchise at this point.

I'll bet Dennison wants to stay. Look at this Oline. This could be one for the ages. Same with Bobby Turner. If they get a HC that let's them continue to operate the running game they know why would he mess with it? The Broncos are famous for the plug and play running game. Dennison learned at the foot of the master. So did Bobby. I can't imagine any HC wanting to mess with that.

Absolutely with Turner. The Broncos have been known for their running game for 13 years now and that's in large part due to Turner.

I have a real problem with Dennison. He is listed as our OC. I don't know what I missed but why is he not the OC now. He was an atrocious ST coach, I hated it when he was made OL coach. People around here were impressed, I wasn't. Gibbs was here part time when the OL still looked good, when he was gone it sucked. Excuses were made for Dennison and when you start making excuses a guy is given longer to have things deteriorate. The OL looked very good this year. We had the talent finally. But I will not shed a tear if Dennison is gone. I still don't believe in his talent.

that was a Shanahan thing. most teams that are currently having success running, are teams who went and drafted a RB early. that leads me to believe, that even if we keep Turner and Dennison, we will probably look at bringing in a RB early in the draft. everyone around the league sees what we could do just passing the ball, and if we got a good RB we could really explode on offense.

Also, with the coaching candidates we have been linked with. the fact that Cowher isn't mentioned is giving me a thought that he is the guy we are really targeting.

also the DPO might ought to get together on their statements!!

By midway through Bowlen's remarks, the assistants heard from Bowlen what they feared: Most, if not all, of them would be fired, too, just as Shanahan had been.

"I don't anticipate keeping any members of the coaching staff," Bowlen said, though later in the news conference he clarified through a team spokesman that the future of Shanahan's assistants would be considered on a coach-by-coach basis.

We are going to see Shanny taking his guys with him.

Now, it's not just Slowick and a defensive draft/FA, it's a total overhaul.

It just is.
