Parallels to 1995 and 1996

I am very happy with Shanahan's firing. It got real stale and it was necessary in my book.

On to the parallels:

1. Any chance Shanny now replaces Fatso Phillips for the 2nd time in his career?? I'm not buying Jerry Jones' vote of confidence now that Shanahan is a free agent. It would be classic to see Shanahan replace Wade Phillips for a 2nd time, just like 1995.

2. Just like 1995, we will be going into next season facing the NFC East.

3. In 1995, modest changes were made to the Defense, as the 1994 Broncos were seen as talented on Offense but horrific with Charlie Waters coaching the Defense.

Britt Hager, Dante Jones, James Jones and Michael Dean Perry were all added by new coach Mike Shanahan. Obviously, those FA moves were modest advances, with only Perry showing some flashes of brilliance. The Broncos Defense lacked a Speed rushing end, were completely devoid of any pocket collapsing abilities, and had no young energy guys and had no "nasty streak" to speak of.

But in 1996, the 2nd year of addressing the problematic Defense, the orange and blue struck gold.

Jumpy Geathers - perhaps the best pocket collapser the NFL has ever seen. Jumpy would've lost a foot race to Craig Morton, but he could drive OG's back into the pocket, like no other.

Alfred Williams - athletic speed guy off the edge, who cleaned up alot of Jumpy's dirty work.

Maa Tanuvasa - Energy guy promoted from the practice squad after only one game dressed in 1995. Tanuvasa approached double digit sack numbers.

Bill Romanowski - leadership and a beautiful nasty streak. Not to mention excellent skills.

John Mobley - rookie draftee, speed rushing, instant upgrade in athleticism.

ALL OF THESE CHANGES were made in the 96 offseason, before the season starting. Hard to find an NFL Defense addressing more pressing needs in one off season.

There is precedence folks. If we keep the young Offensive core together, and get someone who can upgrade this Defense, we'll be competitive for years to come.

Well done. My only fear is that the new guy hoses the only phase that sorta works on this team, the O. If they address the D and bring in a real ST Coach without seting the O back 3 years I will be very pleased.
