Default PFW Whispers Re: Woodyard

http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW...apup122108.htm

"Broncos WLB Wesley Woodyard took snaps as an in-the-box strong safety in Week 15, and sources say Denver will continue to employ the 4-4 set against run-heavy teams the rest of the way. We hear a more complete transition to strong safety could be in the works for Woodyard after the campaign, since the Broncos aren’t thrilled with anyone they have at the position and want to avoid moving WLB D.J. Williams back to the middle."

Interesting, I just thought it was a 1 game gimmick to try and confuse the Panthers. I know we've beaten it to death here, but this is the first I've heard of it as an actual rumour out there in the ether.

He does not have the build to play SS.

This gimmick won't work - he's not a strong safety.

Woodyard to strong side, Larsen to middle, and DJ to weakside

They make it sound as though the season is just getting under way. Last time I checked, it's week 17.

Get Webster and/or Winborn off the field and put Woodyard in. He made more plays in 4 weeks than those sorry asses have their whole time in Denver.

At least Winborn has shown flashes. He absolutely took over on that one series against Buffalo. Webster is a joke.

Winborn has been arguably our best defender after DJ went down.

I just keep watching Winborn getting smoked by Jackson and wonder... "What if WW was covering on that play?"

Woodyard would have mugged that mf'er behind the line of scrimmage because he (like the rest of us) just learned that it was allowed.

As long as we play one safety twenty-five yards off the LOS, I don't think it matters. That defense rocks! You NEVER give up the big play!

No it didn't.

I don't think we'll keep this 4-4 system after this season. Woodyard even said that the Broncos SS is like another linebacker.

No way. Winborn was overmatched out there in space. Then he just trailed the remainder of the play. If WW was out there Jackson may have caught the pass, but noway he gains that much yardage. Younger, faster...

The mentality among most people here is that Winborn sucks because he's loud and Woodyard is pure win just because, and this just isn't true. Winborn is a good Linebacker and Woodyard isn't some sort of superhuman god of a linebacker who can cover Fred Jackson, a pretty fast RB, 40 yards downfield.

A: Yes Winborn is a good backup linebacker. That was to be his 2009 role.

B: It wasn't 40 yards down field. It about 10 or 12... it turned into 40 after he cuaght the pass.

Line of Scrimmage was at the Buffalo 32. He caught the ball at the Denver 42. 30 yards.

If this is there off season answer to SS then Broncos really do need to fire everyone and start over.

Winborn definitely played better than Boss this year. And, he did indeed improve the defense when the backups came in.

I love the thought of keeping Woodyard in the game, but he's a WLB. Let me change that - he is stud linebacker, who should only get better and better.

We will probably screw him all up trying to force him back into a Safety. If we had a stellar D-line it would probably work, but Woodyard will start getting abused by good pass catching TE's. He's not ready to cover an elite TE 20-30 yards down the field. And, if we get lucky enough to beat the Chargers, that stud TE will be named Dallas Clark. Game over...

Barret should be covering Gates or Clark if he gets the chance, and if he isnt, there will be some really pissed off folks here! How Coyer manages to F this one up aspect of the game up will be yet another reason to want to kick him in the nads.
