Default Shanahan allowed team to watch KC/SD game before facing Carolina last Sunday

I'm a Shanahan guy, but this is inexcusable IMO, especially after the 98 Broncos almost got themselves beat at home by the NYJ by admittedly paying more attention to the ATL/MIN NFC Title Game...

Blackout in the locker room

Go ahead, San Diego Chargers. Beat Tampa Bay. Or don't beat Tampa Bay, for all the Broncos care.

Either way, the Broncos won't pay attention to the early game Sunday between the Chargers, who trail Denver by two games in the AFC West, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"We're not going to have the TV on," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "Hopefully, it won't be up on the scoreboard. We're going to try to work with that if we can. We're going to try to take care of business and try to play our best game and not worry about something we can't control."

The Chargers and Tampa Bay kick off at 11 a.m., and the Broncos play the Buffalo Bills at 2 p.m. at Invesco Field at Mile High. If the Chargers lose, the Broncos will clinch the AFC West title, possibly before kickoff at Invesco. If the Chargers win, the pressure will be on the Broncos to beat the Bills to avoid a final-game showdown with the Chargers in San Diego.

"I think that's smart," Broncos cornerback Josh Bell said. "We could relax a little bit (if Tampa Bay wins), thinking: 'Playoffs, man! Playoffs!' You never know the mind-set of certain individuals on the team. So to prevent that from happening, Coach Shanahan is doing what a coach should do and minimize the distractions."

Upon reflection, Shanahan indicated the early game Sunday between the Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs might have affected the way his team played against the Carolina Panthers.

The Chargers rallied from a 21-3 second-quarter deficit to defeat the Chiefs 22-21. The Broncos watched the first half of that game, when it appeared the Chargers were going down. It was some time after kickoff they discovered the Chiefs failed to finish.

The Broncos then were trounced 30-10 by the Panthers.

"I think I made a mistake by allowing that — I normally allow that to happen, except for about an hour and a half before the game," Shanahan said. "So we get a chance to watch the first half of most games, because we get in the locker room early.

"But it does take some emotion out of you, just watching. So we won't have any TVs on. We'll take care of business and not worry about Tampa Bay and San Diego and hopefully control our own destiny."

Honestly, he should take it a lot further. The defense should have to live in cages and be raised by Mike Vick.

Exactly

So by saying it was a mistake are they saying if the Chugger lost we would have rolled over even harder then we did.

Just play the ****ing game on Sunday and be done with it.

At least as of a couple weeks ago, no west coast team has won a 1:00 pm ET game on the East Coast this year.

This is BS.

If the team came out flat, then fine, blame it on the "KC letdown" effect.....but the team as a whole looked FAR better in the first quarter than they did later on in the game.....so there's no blaming anything that happened pregame.

They lost to a better team, plain and simple. It happens. There's no need to look any further and try to blame anything that happened in the locker room prior to the game.

It's funny when people over react. Who cares if he let them watch the game?!?! Like that really had any affect on anything.

To the sky is falling crowd, stop over thinking things. Even if they didn't watch a single play of that game they would have still gotten their asses kicked by the Panthers because they are just a middle of the road team playing at a pretty good team.

I wondered about this.... in fact, I specifically wondered if Shanahan chose to tell them that SD won at half-time. Interesting stuff.

What does not make any sense is blaming the performance on watching the game or hearing the news. If anything it should have lit a fire under their ass's........well unless they are heartless and just wanted to coast into the playoffs for their 15 minutes of fame..........I'm just saying

Yes we did. It would make more sense saying it was a mistake if we went 3 and out on the first drive or something.

Seriously? Is anyone going to blame a tv for a failure at Carolina?

I blame the defense. WW out of position, DJ not running full speed on any play. Bly getting schooled by Steve Smith. Bad gameplan, bad defense, bad result.

My jaw was hanging open on one Carolina rushing TD when DJ came jogging down the line and let the guy (Stewart?) run in uncontested. He could have hit him on the one yard line and tried to dislodge the ball / make a stop. I have a feeling Woodyard would have tried to contest the play rather than letting it happen. Oh well...

The team better remember that Buffalo can run it straight down our throat as well. I might have another nightmare about Jeff Shoate being pushed ten yards into the end zone by Marshawn Lynch...

yep. it's on the players to get the job done but I think a number of factors contributed to the loss, this wasn't the main reason.

Whether they watched the game or not, we still didn't have an answer to Steve Smith except to drop a safety like he was ready to return a punt.

That was one of the oddest things I've ever seen. What was he 20-25 yards off at the snap

WTF

We flat don't have an answer for Steve Smith without Champ Bailey on the field. It could have been a lot worse.

We're not considered a west coast team. Plus, we beat Atlanta under these circumstances.

I may be wrong, but I think he's referring to the SD game at TB next week.
