Default Introducing Cory Boyd

This kid does have some skills. At 58 seconds in there is a really good play by him that shows his strength and heart.

I thought he was a good back at South Carolina.

I would like to see him get a handful of carries this week.

Positives: Has good upper-body muscle tone with broad shoulders, thick chest, developed arms and legs, big bubble and good calf and ankle thickness...Runs a bit too erect coming out of his stance, but has enough looseness in his hips to sink his pads on contact...More of a north-south runner, but has a good feel for the cutback lanes and does a very good job of squaring his shoulders and running behind his pads...Patient runner who follows his blocks well and has the functional lateral agility to sidestep trash...An instinctive downhill runner with the vision to read blocks...Shows quickness into and out of the hole...Has the ability to stick his foot in the ground and make jump cuts in traffic...Smart player who needs just minimal reps to retain information...Shows alertness and awareness to the sticks and boundaries...Tough and physical back who dishes out as much punishment as his body will allow...Has been durable throughout his career and is the type who will perform with aches and pains...Leads by example...Has inline quickness to juke defenders and displays adequate quickness and acceleration to the hole, hitting it with power...Has the athletic ability and quickness to bounce runs to the outside when needed...Breaks tackles and can run over cornerbacks and safeties once he gets into the second level...Runs with the ball tightly secured to his pads in traffic...Appears to have natural hands as a receiver...Even though he is used mostly as a check-down receiver and on middle screens, he is quite effective lining up as a bubble receiver on screen plays...Possesses good hands and shows flexibility to make shoelace catches as a safety valve...Extends to make catches on screens and can swing out of the backfield to extend and high-point the ball...As a blocker, he will use a generous shoulder lift for pop and will not hesitate to engage blitzers head-on...Steps up and butts defenders, using his hands effectively to pop with shock and slides to mirror for sustained blocks...His work habits on and off field have improved since his 2005 suspension...Runs hard under his pads and is an effective red-zone performer, with the body lean to fall forward for extra yardage after the tackle...Has the frame to add more bulk, if a team desires to convert him into a fullback or short-yardage runner...Has the loose hips to redirect and spin away from the crowd and uses a strong stiff-arm to break tackles when the hole is being squeezed.

If the kid is so good, why has it taken us getting to our 8th RB option on the year to give Boyd a shot? That reason in itself should say that he's not that good. But then again, we were beautifully surprised with Hillis, and we're all PISSED he's gone now!

While I'm risking sounding like Debbie Downer, I'm also hoping with all my might that this kid surprises us like a couple other young guys have done so far this year. I'm all for diamonds in the rough, so hopefully this is another one!

Compares To: OLANDIS GARY-ex-Denver...Boyd is an efficient north-south runner with some hip shake and lateral agility to redirect to the cutback lanes, but lacks explosion coming out of his stance, the result of getting too erect before dropping his pads at contact. He is a capable safety-valve type receiver or as a receiver on screens out of the backfield. He will never win a foot race in the open field and needs to add more bulk to his frame. He runs hot and cold as a blocker, but some teams could look to use him like Justin Griffith as a "tweener" fullback, a position he has experience playing earlier in his career.

If we pull off another UDFA steal like Woodyard with Boyd, Goodell will fine Shanahan.

I like what I read, he was drafted by the Bucs and they had Dunn and Cadillac so it was doubtful he would get any playing time but he reminds me a lot in his skillset of hillis. Great hands, not a great blocker but tough insider runner, not huge speed but probably has more moves than Hillis. You never know. I do know it wont hurt to have him and it might be useful.

I think going down the stretch, a runner who can laid some wood is much, much better than a finesse edge runner like Bell.

That is why the loss of Hillis hurt so much and why i am hoping Boyd can emerge.

I want to go to Pittsburgh or Baltimore late in December with a hammer...not a scalpel.

That looked like something you'd see Barry Sanders do. I counted about 10 missed tackles on that thing. The more I read about this kid the more I'm impressed with him. I'm not saying he's TD but he's the same size as TD and he's faster. He has sick change of direction skills and he looks like he's patient waiting for holes to open. He even runs through tackles with power. I know you can't tell the whole story from highlight reels but thre's no denying he's an intriguing runner. It's worth noting they were targeting him BEFORE we lost Hillis.

Next year promises to be interesting with the RB's we have returning. We have Torain coming back, who Shanny likened to TD. We have Hillis who can play either position and he's a chain mover. We have the Alridge kid who went for 7.1 a pop at Houston and can catch passes out of the backfield. It remains to be seen what Cory Boyd is but I have a feeling he's going to surprise us. We even have Tatum Bell...and nobody's expecting much from him but how many teams have a 1000 yard rusher who is just hoping to make the team? Then there's Young and Hall...who knows if either of them even makes the roster but they can play in the NFL somewhere. Will we draft a stud runner? I don't know...probably not...but all the guys we have now look capable. It will be interesting to see who emerges from the pack.

If this kid has learnt the offense quickly enough while on the PS and is activated Sunday, he will be the redzone/goal-line back. Far more powerful and a better receiver out of the backfield than anyone else we have.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Aqib Talib vs. Denver Broncos RB Cory Boyd
Talib and Boyd, who were both drafted by Tampa Bay, entered the history books last summer by jawing, trading punches and then wrestling in the middle of a workshop on money management during the league’s rookie symposium. A Buccaneers source said the two had been exchanging words since the Bucs brought their rookies together following the draft. Eventually the trash talking escalated into a donnybrook at the symposium. Forget money management. Sink the rookie budget into anger management.

I'm looking forward to seeing what this kid brings. There's something about his running style that I like. He reminds me of Marshawn Lynch how he looks a little awkward with his upper body moving all over the place, but I think that style is difficult for defenders to get a bead on.

He seems like he has decent vision and an NFL worthy combination of speed and power.Given the way this season has gone though, durability better be his greatest asset.

I think that we might as well start him and see what he's got. We know Bell isn't worthy of starting, so why not. I hope he gets 15-20 carries so we can get a good look at him.

Great thread...look at the moves he makes from 2:39-2:51 in the first video. He is elusive, he can break tackles and he has a motor that doesn't quit.

Very impressive! If he can pick up the playbook and ajdust to live game action, he could be a great asset down the stretch. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do for the Broncos!

I'm going to hold you to this statement Rock Chalk!

In all honesty, this guy doesn't look like a pretender. He is a fighter with a strong natural ability, and he runs like an animal. I hope he does well and stays healthy.
