Maybe this has been discussed in other threads, but just throwing this out there.
With Williams, Bailey, Winborn and Woodyard all back and presumably healthy next year, who starts and who sits at OLB? Bailey's contract ... and ability when healthy ... indicate he'd have to start w/ DJ. But Winborn and Woodyard have certainly earned their PT this year. Might we re-visit switching to a 3-4 defense w/ the whole offseason to work on it ... maybe a 3-4 coordinator brought in? If we can't land a stud DE in the draft or FA, maybe that's a good way to turn. Moss could be looked at as a pass-rushing OLB as was brought up earlier in the year. |

I personally thought Boss was getting back into the groove right before going down, but he ALWAYS goes down. I don't see how he can be depended on to stay on the field.
I still think Winborn = Nate Webster, he's a big play waiting to happend both ways. I'd rather have a consistant tackling machine outhere, even if he isn't as flashy. Assuming Boss could stay healthy, I'd like a DJ-WWIII- Boss LB corps. Since that can't happen. I'd at least like to See DJ- Larsen/rookie- WWIII |

I hate the 3-4 and fortunately Shanny said it wouldn't come up again this year and hopefully that edict will continue into next season.
Fact is right now we have very few players who fit the 3-4 as we have already discussed multiple times. I think we have seen the last of Bailey as a full time starter. Winborn is better as a backup where he is a good player than as a starter. Williams is clearly a guy who would start on many teams and Woodyard has been very far ahead of what could be expected from a guy with his background and size. I think we will see a move to have Woodyard and Williams play the OLB spots and a MLB to be named later starting in the middle. |

In before someone says we have to draft Moore or Mays!
IMO the 3-4 won't resurface here again, at least as long as we have Slowik :S If Bailey returns to full health, I think we'll be looking at DJ and Woodyard with him, who's in which position is anyone's guess. |

I still think there is a chance the 3-4 shows up in a playoff game if we make it to the playoffs. They have had the best results getting pressure that way. Shanny just saying this to throw off people so they dont know what hit them in the playoffs.

I like the problem.
DJ is very good, Wesley is very good, Boss when healthy is good, Winborn is pretty good himself, and Webster's not bad. Just get a ****ing super Mike, please... |

Cut Boss.
Guy could play decent enough for us if he could stay healthy for longer than a 3 play stretch. But he has always been and will always be an injury waiting to happen. |

Just saying I would not be surprised if they sneak it in on a third down here or there in the playoffs. They wont be using it all game because of the reason you said but to give a different look to throw someone off they are capable of doing that.

I would like to try WW at the strong side.
If he can make it there, then DJ, a top rookie, and WW would be a fantastic trio IMO I would rather us get another DE and a FS first though and possibly wait till the 2010 draft for a MLB but I would not be dissapointed if we got someone like Curry in the first round assuming he lasts that long |

People say bailey would be mad if we cut his Brother, but I think Champ's too much of a pro to not understand the circumstance. He's played on a Shanahan team for most of his career now. He knows what happens to players who can't stay healthy.

You don't HAVE to cut Boss to put someone else in his starting job. Depth and competition is a good thing.

Easy open competition between Boss and WW for the SLB starting job next year. the loser could backup up SLB and WLB. We need to draft a MLB with Larsen for depth. Webster is a FA no? Probably let him walk, koutovides is gone unless he restructures as a pure ST player. Winborn as the 4th OLB.

The defense got better when Boss got injured. The dude stinks I don't get how some people around here think he is a good player. Broncos only signed him to keep Champ happy IMO. Hopefully Boss will have a setback and we won't have to worry about Broncos trying to play him again.

It all depends upon whether Woodyard can play Sam or Mike ...
I am 100% for keeping DJ at Will forever, but we also must get Woodyard on the field. |

Boss Bailey has played all three linebacker positions and his contract isn't all that big.
I'd be very surprised if he's cut. I'm personally betting on one of two scenarios next year. Scenario 1, my preference: DJ at WLB, a stud MLB from this deep class in the middle, and Woodyard + 10 pounds of muscle at SLB. Boss Bailey, Winborn, and Larsen are the backups. Scenario 2, sadly more likely: Woodyard at WLB, DJ at MLB, and Boss Bailey at SLB. When Boss gets hurt Winborn takes over at SLB and Louis Green/new draftee and Larsen back up Woodyard and DJ respetively. I'm REALLY hoping for scenario 1. There is a scenario 3 but you really don't want to know it. Here it is though. ![]() scenario 3: DJ at WLB, Webster back at MLB, Bailey at SLB. Winborn first off the bench at either OLB spot, Woodyard still on STs and waiting for significant injury to see the field. |
