I like Brandon Marshall and what he brings to this offense - but I think that he's soft. I'd like to see him more consistent and reliable in traffic.

There is no reason to have to wait until the offseason to fix a case of the dropsies. Dropping the football is a matter of mental focus, and doesn't need months to fix. Marshall just needs to slow down the game a tad, make sure he catches the balls first, then worry about YAC. He's looking for more every time, and that's good, but he does need to focus on making the catch no matter what, then go about the heroics.

Brandon Marshall is like Barry Bonds or Babe Ruth. He always tries to swing for the fences. When that happens, you will also strike out quite a bit. That's why you have a team of other gifted athletes to also play the game.
Even if Marshall drops 50% of his passes, he serves a huge purpose for this team - he demands double coverage almost the entire game. It allows other guys like Royal, Scheffler, and Stokely to do their thing and win games. Ask 31 other teams if they would like Marshall on their squad. |

We drafted him in the fourth because he was so raw, particularly in the mental aspects of the game. He has come a lot further than anyone could have expected, but he still has plenty of growing to do.
He is having a down year and is still on pace for 1300. This year is teaching him a lot about dealing with being the focus of defenses. Assuming he can keep his head on straight his future is very bright here. |

Obviously I want to see Brandon Marshall drop less passes, but the other aspects of his game are pretty tight.
I specifically do not just want to see him run upfield after catching the ball. Sometimes that would be best - say when he can get a first on a 3rd down situation. What scares defenses is his ability to take a ball the distance on almost any given play. It is huge. |

For those interested according to Stats Inc. as of 11/30 Marshal leads the league with 134 targets and is third with 9 drops.
http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/l...e=NFL&rank=052 http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/l...e=NFL&rank=232 I do think he is fighting the ball a little bit when he has people draped over him. |

Aren't we second in the league in drops? With 26 or something? At a certain point, you have to take a hard look at Steve Watson.

Marshall has proven in 06 and 07 that he has great hands. Especially in 07 i thought he had better hands than any other receiver in the league. So to say that he can't catch is obviously retarded.
However this season he's struggling a little bit when he gets the ball over the middle, those short slants to the inside. I think he just tries to do too much. When the ball goes to his direction he's already thinking about how to break 1-2 tackles and then create a bigplay. Instead of just catching the ball and then see what happens. He never has any troubles with 20+ yard throws, he never drops those. Makes incredible catches down the sideline, one handed catches in the endzone and all that. It's always just the short ones to the inside. Let's not forget that the field conditions were awful yesterday. Royal couldn't even hang on to the ball when he was laying on the ground - on top of the football. He had another terrible drop, so did Stokley. Also Marshall was arguably playing the best corner in the league (along with Asomugha) in Revis. And while this has nothing to do with the short balls our receivers drop, it would certainly help if Cutler could work on his deep ball. It's the ugliest thing in football. Almost as ugly as Kurt Warners wife. Last edited by BabyTO; 12-01-2008 at 09:22 AM.. |
