Default Why take holding penalty on Dumervil sack

I don't post much, but I was wondering why take that penalty. There was a play for -5 yards and you put the other team on 3rd down with only one more chance to make a first down. You only gained an additional 5 yards but I don't think giving back a down is worth it. And in this instance the next play was unsuccessful for the fins which would have lead to a 4th down instead of 3rd down.

I think it was only a loss of 2 in the end, so it would've set up 3rd and 10 I think from the 45. I thought they should've declined the penalty, but oh well.
Still can't give up a 18 yard pass on 3rd and 19.

Defense caved in there on the last drive, it was brutal to watch.

The worst play of the entire game had to be when they picked up that 3rd and 19. Why do on all out blitz in that situation?

That was the right call, to take that penalty. It ended up 3rd and 19 anyways? Why the **** would you even ask that question?

It would have been great if we got a sack, but Slowik got outsmarted on that play... he decided to play soft all game and then he finally decides to blitz. He probably wanted to try and knock them out of FG range...but at 3rd and 19, most, if not all, teams will run a short play to try to maintain their FG range or just chew up extra yardage when the game is on the line.

It was stupid to take the penalty. If you can give this defense a chance to get off the field in the next play, you don't keep playing with fire.

Agreed. I thought time on the clock was more important. Did not make much sense. The 3rd and 19 play was a real bummer.

2nd and 19 > 3rd and 10 in most situations.

This is the type of thinking that causes defense to NOT make plays.

You can think, don't take the penalty and lets just get off the field asap!

Or you can think

Take the penalty, and give ourselves 2 more chances to force a TO.

Obviously your thinking falls into the category of how our defense has been playing all season, piss poor with no turnovers.

They did, but to their defense, they had been on the field an insane amount of time because of the ineptness of the offense most of the night.

3 turnovers and a couple of 3 and outs and like a 42 second scoring drive from the offense really hurt the defense's performance down the stretch.

They really did look good for most of the game though and at least they had some heart.

It went from 3rd and 14 to 2nd and 19. The ball went from the Denver 48 to the Miami 47. A difference of 5 yards. And it is not based on the play of the defense, I don't think it is the right call one way or the other. And forcing a 4th down at that point with one more play is turning the ball over with more time on the clock.

Do you know how much time was left at that point?

Please post it to let me know that you know, I have a feeling once you know, you'll realize how ignorant your post was.

I didn't understand that, either.

Jesus... take the sack and the lost yardage, and don't give the Dolphins another down to work with.
