MONEYBALL #38
Default What is harder to deal with? Losing with or without talent?

So San Diego has talent on both sides of the ball and they are worse than we are.

We have some decent talent on O but we have no real talent on D, what we do have is out nursing a groin.

LJ had the best game of the year yesterday breaking 100 yards and they still lose in yet another shootout.

Teams run up and down on the Broncos but they have the 2nd worst amount of talent, KFC has no D at all, in the AFC west.

Would you rather be content with the way our team is now or lose with very good talent on both sides of the ball.

We have talent, so losing would be the hardest thing to deal with BECAUSE we have the talent to win consistently.

this team has the talent to win, we just lack the coaching to pull it together.

Losing with talent. Losing without talent isn't bad because you can accept that another team is just better. When you have the talent and still manage to be the worst unit in the league it's hard to swallow.

The way the NFL works, I'd rather lose without talent as the ability to make a quick turnaround is more likely for a team with higher draft choices and more cap flexibility. The team with talent that is losing will have difficulty improving as it's likely that only a coaching change can bring on the improvement they need.

Now for a team like San Diego, they have so much talent that - while they should be winning more now and it will be hard to keep that group together a whole lot longer - a new coaching staff and a few mid-level FA's and draft choices could make a huge turnaround. The worst position, IMO, is to be where Denver has been most of the decade - not god awful but not good enough. It makes it very difficult to climb out of that whole.

This is so true. There was a poll up a few weeks ago about which Broncos could start on defense for other teams. The reality is that the Broncos defense is middle-of-the-pack talent wise. For all the crap they get on here on the Mane, guys like Dre' Bly, Boss Bailey and Nate Webster would be UPGRADES for some teams with better defenses. The Broncos defensive talent is good enough to be in the 15-20 range and has no business being last in the league. I personally think Lowry and Manual are the only "clearly not starting caliber" players on defense. I'd obviously like an upgrade over Webster, Dumervil, Engelberger, etc. - but teams do a lot more with far less. In fact, I was sitting next to a very knowledgeable Bucs fan in our game against them when he was of the opinion that, as a unit, we had as much or more talent on defense then they do.

Losing sucks no matter how you look at it, but when you throw losses away like the Broncos have this year, it's more disappointing. The KC and JAX games were definitely decided by turnovers.

jesus, we lost a couple games to pretty good football team the last two times we played. it doesn't mean we are the worst team in the league. when the broncos play well they can beat anyone. this constant negative thread bs is just lame. you mother****ers need to man up and root for the team to play better.

Losing with talent is not as bad because a coaching change could change everthing unlike a team without talent. But, the broncos have talent. Although pretty much all of it is on the offensive side of the ball.

Jacksoville isn't all that good 2-4 not counting the denver game. Plus the game was at home. The Patriots are good but 41-7 come on

I disagree with the lack of talent on D.

The majority of the problems we have are both systematic and scrubs at one important position (SAFETY).

Loosing sucks, loozing sucks,

Actually losing is tough to take with or without talent. I dont think we have alot of talent on defense that other teams do, so if we did have alot of known talent and still found ways to loose err lose, that wouls suck even more, imo.

We have 3 guys on our defense that would potentially start on NFL teams.

Robertson, Thomas and Bailey. One is out with injury, the other two cannot make up for the crappiness of the people around them.

Offensively, our talent is good but a bit overrated. Cutler isnt quite there yet but has promise. Marshall is a beast and Royal has much potential but Scheff has injury issues, Graham cant catch consistently, and none of our RBs are really great (good maybe, great no). Our offensive line does have promise and is why our offense is in good shape for the future.

Several teams would gladly give a first day draft choice for DJ Williams - especially the way he's playing. Also Dumervil is someone a lot of teams could use. Bly, despite everyone asserting he sucks, would easily make a team and start somewhere in the league. Moss and Crowder, for all the hate they get, are playing better and better. We're not world beaters, or even above average, but this idea that we have no one good on our team is not true. Our safeties are the worst in the league, but our other areas are middle of the road. We should not be the worst defense in the league and yet we are.

Slowik is the problem. His defense looks exactly like it did all the other areas he's coached. Unfortunately he's Shanahan's friend so we're stuck with more crap and a bag of excuses because Shanahan's in denial. "Oh you take away those touchdowns and we're a top scoring defense." Gee, thanks Shanahan. If we take away all the big plays we gave up, we are pretty good. That's really useful. I'll remember that next time I see a running back getting twenty yards. I'll think to myself "if I take this play away, we're stopping the run!" I wonder if we miss the playoffs Shanahan will say "if we take away our loses we're in the playoffs!"

This thread wasn't meant as negative, I was fishing for the SD poster takes, so far only Khan and Alec got the feel of the the thread and delivered good takes.

SD being rated worse than us with the talent they have is not good.

Doesn't mean that solwic knows what he is doing though.
