Patriots’ Brandon Spikes suspended four games

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...ed-four-games/

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 10, 2010, 3:49 PM EST

The New England Patriots will play the last four games of the regular season without rookie linebacker Brandon Spikes.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Spikes has been suspended and has decided not to appeal so that he can serve his suspension immediately and return for the playoffs.

Spikes apparently tested positive for a banned substance that was, according to Rapoport, not a steroid. There’s been no further information from Spikes, the Patriots or the league.

Spikes has played in all 12 games this season, starting eight. He has 61 tackles.

Giants-Vikings headed to Monday Night

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-monday-night/

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 11, 2010, 10:13 PM EST

We hope the Giants packed some extra clothes for their trip to Minnesota.

After a day filled with travel delays and a blizzard in Minneapolis, the Giants-Vikings game will be moved to Monday Night, the NFL has confirmed. Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger was the first to report the possibility Saturday night.

The Giants, stuck in Kansas City, were planning to leave for the game at 8 am Sunday. It’s possible that continued poor weather and other complications caused the NFL to re-consider that plan.

We are still waiting to hear more details, such as when the game will be played and whether it will be available on television other than in the home markets. (Historical precedent says it won’t.)

Either way, Brett Favre has another day to let that shoulder heal.

Maybe they can do some "skitching" behind some Camero's in the snow or get some hair cuts that are business in the front and a party in the back!

Raiders fans have to be excited about rookie Jacoby Ford (4th round pick, WR/KR, Clemson).

Ford has returned 3 kickoffs for TDs, scored 2 TDs on receptions, and rushed for another TD.

He is pretty damn electric when he gets the ball in his hands.

Tom Brady (319 straight attempts) passed Bernie Kosar (308 straight attempts) for the NFL record of most consecutive passing attempts without throwing an INT.

Josh Freeman has developed into a good QB pretty quickly.

I underestimated him when he was a draft prospect in 2009.

Freeman threw 5 TD passes this week.

He has 3,196 yards passing (60.3 completion percentage) with 23 TDs and only 6 INTs. He also has 353 yards rushing.

In addition to his stats, he displays a lot of leadership skills as well.

Tampa Bay is headed in the right direction and will finish with a winning season.

I still can't believe the Titans let LeGarrette Blount go. He has basically started 10 games and has 941 yards rushing and 6 TDs.

He is averaging 5.2 ypc and has 4-100+ yard games.

You know who has had a nice rookie year....Joe Haden, CB, Browns.

Haden has 6 INTs and is going to be a shut down corner for the Browns for the next decade.

Eagles hire Jim Washburn as defensive line coach

The Eagles announced today that they have hired Washburn, who previously held the same position with the Titans. Jeff Fisher had said he was hoping to keep Washburn in Tennessee, which suggests that Washburn got a better offer from the Eagles than the Titans were willing to make.

Washburn had a great relationship with Albert Haynesworth in Tennessee, and the speculation has already begun that the Eagles might be interested in Haynesworth if the Redskins cut him loose.

Carson Palmer will ask the Cincinnati Bengals to trade him and will contemplate retirement if he does not get his wish, according to several sources.

talk about a QB who has taken a serious nose dive over the last 3-4 years. He used to be one of the top QBs in the game and now he's asking for a trade from a talented and relatively young team who swept the AFCC last year.

Do you mean two years ago? They were terrible last year and don't appear to be headed anywhere in the short or long term.

Don't really want to make another Cutler thread but I thought this was interesting:

Quote:
In defense of Josh McDaniels, he never had a chance with Jay Cutler.

On Jan. 12, 2009, the day that McDaniels was officially announced as the Broncos' head coach, Cutler called the front office and demanded a trade, according to three NFL sources.

Read The Denver Post's Terms of Use of its content: http://www.denverpost.com/termsofuse

For me it reassures my belief that Elway shouldn't have made those comments on Friday, if Cutler never really wanted to play for McDaniels how could you keep the guy?

The Bengals are an odd sort of team in the NFL. Mike Brown the owner is the GM and grand poobah. Son of Paul Brown, the owner of the old Cleveland Browns, who of course got their team name from him. The only comparable franchise is the Raiders with Al "Manager of the General Partner" Davis.

The Bidwill's used to be comparable, but wised up. Hell, even Crazy Al has had monumental success compared to Mike Brown's Bengals. The NFL is still full of crazy stories. Unfortunately, Denver is one of them right now.

Palmer should not have signed an extension with that team, so it's his fault from his first contract. Now he's washed up.

Falcons DE Jamaal Anderson and S Erik Coleman are candidates to be released this offseason.

Anderson is coming off his best season in Atlanta as a key component of a better than expected run defense. The Falcons have to decide if he's worth $3.6 million with reinforcements needed at receiver, tight end, running back, pass rusher, and secondary. Coleman, due $3 million, would have to take a major paycut to return.

The Steelers' run defense has actually improved since Ziggy Hood took over for an injured Aaron Smith at left defensive end in Week 8.
Smith has a reputation as the league's best 3-4 end against the run, but the stats suggest Hood has been just as good. The Steelers allowed 63.8 rushing yards per game with Smith starting versus 62.1 per game with Hood. The 2009 first-rounder is yet another draft "hit" for a franchise that rarely swings and misses.

Free agent LB Adalius Thomas hopes to play football in 2011.
Thomas received in-season tryouts from the Bengals and Dolphins, but never signed. Turning 34 this August, it's hard to imagine him latching on for more than a minimum-salary deal. He pass-rush skills evaporated in 2008.

According to Profootballtalk's Gregg Rosenthal, the NFL expects the franchise tag to be in play as normal in February.

Rosenthal is reporting from a league meeting at NFL offices on Thursday. It was a widely held belief that some mechanism similar to the franchise tag would be available in the next CBA, but it's somewhat surprising that teams are still planning to use the original tag in the coming weeks. Michael Vick, Haloti Ngata, Logan Mankins, Vincent Jackson, Sidney Rice, LaMarr Woodley, Tamba Hali, Marcedes Lewis, and Johnathan Jospeh are candidates for the tag. Jan. 27 - 1:55 pm et

1. By the league’s estimate, 569 players will be affected in March by a lockout. Of those, 495 players are scheduled to be free agents in 2011, with the assumption that the league goes back to a system where four accrued seasons are needed to become a free agent. That number includes 170 starters and 70 Pro Bowl players.

It will be the biggest free-agent class ever, and it will have the highest percentage of starters available ever.

They also counted 74 players with roster or option bonuses due in March, which have a total of $143.5 million due to those players.
