Bucs let go of Derrick Ward

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-derrick-ward/

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 31, 2010 1:38 PM ET

Tired of a lackluster attitude and sluggish running, the Bucs didn't even allow running back Derrick Ward to stay with the team until final roster cuts this weekend.

The team admitted their mistake from 2009 free agency, announcing they cut Ward after only one season with the team.

(This Bucs regime is getting good at quickly admitting mistakes; they dumped two coordinators last year and probably will cut ties with Michael Clayton this week one year after his big deal.)

We thought the Ward signing in Tampa for reasonable money made sense last year, but he didn't perform in 2009. The team didn't seem happy with Ward's work ethic, as he supposedly showed up to training camp this year out of shape.

The move cements training camp sensation Kareem Huggins as Carnell Williams' backup and a favorite fantasy sleeper for everyone drafting this week.

I didn't watch the whole thing it was kind of pointless. Kind of just skimmed through it. I have no idea wtf they were doing to be honest, why he recorded it was completely retarded.

The Bucs have cut Derrick Ward...

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...e=HP_headlines

If memory serves me correctly we took a very long look at this guy last year and were subsequently outbid for his services by Tampa. Imagine the uproar if the roles were reversed. Thank f ark we didn't!

Time for some more Greg Olsen trade rumors
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 1, 2010 12:44 PM ET
Greg Olsen isn't one of the best 15 tight ends in football, but he makes good copy.

Now that the cycle of "Hey, Mike Martz really does love tight ends" summer fluff is over, we can now return to the usual Olsen fare: trade rumors.

Mike Mulligan of the Chicago Sun-Times -- who calls Martz's love of Olsen "tireless propaganda" -- has a league source that says there is "still talk" that Olsen is available in a trade.

The only problem is that the Bears apparently would still want a second- or third-round pick for him, which is hard to imagine happening at this time. The Patriots may have been interested back in April, but they have two rookies they like now.

We'd guess that Olsen stays put in Chicago, but doesn't wind up as a big part of the offense. Mike Martz is going to use Brandon Manumaleuna for his blocking skills, and he's not going to use two tight end sets.

That all probably means we will write more about Olsen trade rumors during the season.

Raiders call out Schefter, too
Posted by Mike Florio on September 1, 2010 2:44 PM ET
ESPN's Adam Schefter is having an interesting day.

It started with a report that the Redskins have cut Byron Westbrook, which the Washington Post, a publication which one of its columnist recently confused with The Onion, thereafter refuted. (As of this posting, Westbrook is still on the roster.)

Then, Schefter reported that the Bills, Giants, and Raiders have discussed trading for Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart. The Bills responded by calling the report erroneous.

The Raiders, who once called Schefter a "false rumor monger" for reporting that coach Art Shell would be fired not long before, well, coach Art Shell was fired, have also joined in the anti-Schefterfest.

In a front-page item on the team's website titled, "Schefter makes untrue statements regarding Raiders," the team says: "ESPN's Adam Schefter is once again making untrue statements about The Oakland Raiders, this time regarding Matt Leinart. The Raiders have never discussed trading for Leinart. The Raiders are very happy about their quarterback situation."

The Giants have yet to publicly respond to Schefter's report.

If you're a team who uses the TE a lot in the passing game then surely you'd give up a 3rd for Olsen?

He's improved every year he's been in the league, 8 TD's last year, and is still only 25 and looking like he has room to improve.

As far as I know he's never been in trouble, would have thought he'd be a good pickup for a 3rd.

Darnell Dockett gets four year extension

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 1, 2010 6:41 PM ET
Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett is finally going to get paid.

After years of pining for a new deal, a league source tells PFT's Mike Florio that the Cardinals and Dockett have agreed to a four-year contract extension. The deal will take him through 2015.

Dockett is known well for his personality and his Twitter account, but he's also quietly developed into one of the most disruptive pass rushers in football the last few years. He's listed as a defensive tackle for Pro Bowl purposes, but usually lines up as an end in Arizona's unique 3-4 defense. He's just hitting his prime and has overcome an amazing amount to get to where he is.

The team called a press conference, which will be streamed live online. It will provide a welcome dose of positive news during a drama-filled week for the organization.

Ochocinco buys dinner for 64 strangers in Indy

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...ngers-in-indy/

Posted by Mike Florio on September 2, 2010 5:18 AM ET

On November 14, the Bengals will play the Colts in Indianapolis. On Wednesday, receiver Chad Ochocinco spread some advance goodwill by buying dinner at St. Elmo's Steakhouse in Indy for 64 of his closest friends -- whom he had never before met.

Ochocinco posted an open invitation on his Twitter page, and our pal Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio (who has a St. Elmo's source) said that folks arrived in droves.

For those of you wondering, the magic number was 64 instead of 85 because the room in which the dinner occurred holds only 64 people.

Wright says that Ochocinco was very cordial and took great care of the employees.

St. Elmo's, as you may recall, was the location of the alleged pilfering by Saints coach Sean Payton of a bottle of wine that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones supposedly had reserved during the Scouting Combine.

Ochocinco has promised additional dinner outings at road games, particularly in Atlanta on October 24 and New York on Thanksgiving. (Why do we have a feeling that Chad will be showing up for that one dressed as a Mexican pilgrim?)

Regardless, Chad is a genuine character, a brilliant self-promoter, and apparently a nice guy. He likely plunked down close to $10,000 last night in after-tax dollars and he gave 64 people he didn't previously know an experience that they'll likely never forget.

The $10-15 thou he spent on that dinner is nothing compared to the publicity it gives him, popularity, and endrosements in return. He's genius at PR.

I understand this was a good business move.

I guess I'm talking more about numerous $150,000 to $250,000 cars and the houses and all the **** like that.

If he makes $50 million for playing football before taxes....that doesn't leave you with the kind of money to buy millions in cars and homes. Scottie Pippen made a lot more than that during his career....and he is broke right now.

He markets himself well....but I don't see him being a huge and marketable star once his playing days are over.
