Bengals bag first-round pick

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...st-round-pick/

Posted by Mike Florio on August 2, 2010 5:16 PM ET

For the Bengals, a holdout from the team's first-round pick has become the rule, not the exception. Few teams like to pay big money based only on potential, and the bargain-hunting Bengals are usually one of the most reluctant franchises when it comes to making an unproven player a multi-millionaire.

This year, the team's first-round pick held out once again. But the holdout has ended. Tight end Jermaine Gresham has agreed to terms.

Receiver Chad Ochocinco broke the news via Twitter, besting the likes of ESPN's Adam Schefter by a minute.

Greshman missed all of 2009 with a torn ACL, an injury that may have caused Gresham to slide a bit, making him available when the Bengals used the 21st overall pick.

As pointed out in our AFC North training camp one-liners, Gresham had been placed at the top of the depth chart, even without signing his contract. We'll see whether he can stay there once he starts practicing.

The Detroit Lions and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh reached an agreement Tuesday on a five-year contract, according to team sources.

The two sides have agreed on the terms of the deal, but still are signing off on the language of it. The deal will not be signed until the language is completed.

The numbers were projected to come in north of $12 million a year, which means the deal will be worth over $60 million dollars. Suh is guaranteed $40 million.

At the risk of having the appearance of someone having been hidden under a rock, does that mean Suh signed?

Getting down to brass tacks of Tebow deal
Posted: 08/04/2010 01:00:00 AM MDT

Tim Tebow, right, and quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels go over a few things Tuesday. (John Leyba, The Denver Post )The contract details on Broncos rookie quarterback Tim Tebow show that his five-year deal is worth $9,713,500, not the $11.25 million the industry reports, according to a union source.

The difference is a one-time playing time bonus of $1,537,500 that the players association counts because it's "easy to earn." Almost all first-rounders hit the one-time playing bonus, but Jarvis Moss and Brady Quinn from the 2007 draft are among those who have yet to hit their one-timers. Tebow will be well on his way to his first NFL million on Friday, when the Broncos pay him a $975,000 advance, which essentially will be counted as a signing bonus for prorated salary cap reasons. Some details on the Tebow deal:

Base salary
2010: $1,295,000 (fully guaranteed)

2011: $1,618,750 (fully guaranteed)

2012: $1,942,500 (fully guaranteed)

2013: $2,266,750 (fully guaranteed)

2014: $2,590,500 ($567,500 guaranteed)

First payday Friday
Advance-signing bonus:

$975,000 on Friday (salary reduced to $325,000)

$6.275 million due 29 days after start of 2011 league year. Typically season starts March 1, but it's written this way in case work stoppage delays start of season. (Salaries from 2011-14 reduced to offset advance.)

Put me in, coach
One-time playing time bonus: (contractually considered likely to be earned)

Tebow collects $1,537,500 if he plays 35 percent of the offensive snaps in 2010, or 45 percent of the snaps in any of the seasons 2011-14.

The bonus rolls over from year to year until Tebow reaches the playing-time threshold, and expires the first time he hits it.

High thresholds
Mid-tier incentives: (contractually considered unlikely to earn)

Value of Tebow's contract doubles from $11.25 million (including one-time playing time bonus) to $22.5 million if he reaches multiple thresholds, including:

55 percent playing

Post Poll - Broncos QBs

Which quarterback do you wish to see take the majority of snaps as the starter this year for the Denver Broncos?

Kyle Orton: The incumbent will flourish in his second season under coach Josh McDaniels.
Brady Quinn: Given a second chance in a new system, his vast potential will be realized.
Tim Tebow: Why wait? He has proven himself a winner at the highest levels of college ball.

time in two of his first three seasons, 2010-12, or 70 percent playing time in 2013.

The Broncos make the playoffs, he reaches certain QB ranking thresholds, and receives unspecified honors.

Playoffs, honors equal bigger check
Max value: (contractually considered unlikely to earn)

The total value of Tebow's contract can escalate to $33 million if the Broncos reach the playoffs multiple times in his first four years, he has multiple top-five QB rankings, and he has multiple league honors such as NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP.

The Lions have parted ways with veteran safety Marquand Manuel, per a league source.

Manuel, 31, will be cleared out presumably to make way for C.C. Brown at strong safety.

The move comes as a mild surprise, given that Manuel re-signed with the Lions in the offseason, getting a $50,000 signing bonus on a one-year deal for the veteran minimum.

Manuel previously has played for the Bengals, Seahawks, Panthers, Packers, and Broncos.

You have to use a very short thread title to get it posted. I just type 4 random letters and then edit the thread title after the thread is posted.

Sergio Kindle remains hospitalized

Posted by Mike Florio on August 4, 2010 1:42 PM ET
We're starting to think that Ravens linebacker Sergio Kindle suffered a far more serious injury than originally reported. Yes, a fractured skull is never minor. But Kindle remains hospitalized nearly two weeks after the accident.

Pregnant women get sent home roughly a day after they pop. Bypass patients are wheeled out not long after they get zippered shut. So we'll infer that Kindle, a second-round draft pick from Texas, sustained a very significant trauma, and we wish him well as he continues to recover.

Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun reports that Kindle will be moved to a rehab facility next week. "He's in great spirits," coach John Harbaugh said.

Kindle surely would be in even better spirits if he'd improve to the point where he could go home, and if the Ravens would sign him to his first NFL contract. The fact that the Ravens haven't completed the deal makes us wonder whether the injury was sufficiently serious to call into question Kindle's ability to play professional football in 2010, or ever.

We hope that's not the case. Based on the fact that Kindle is still hospitalized, we have a feeling that we're not getting the whole story as to the extent of the injury.
