CHIEFS ADD CARTHON

Posted by Mike Florio on February 19, 2009, 4:40 p.m. EST

The Kansas City Chiefs have added another assistant coach to Todd Haley’s staff.

Joining the team will be Maurice Carthon, who served most recently as the running backs coach in Arizona. Before that, Carthon was the Browns’ offensive coordinator.

In Kansas City, Carthon’s title will be assistant head coach. But while most assistant head coaches typically have other responsibilities, it appears that Carthon’s role will solely be to serve as assistant head coach.

The Chiefs also identified the job duties of several assistant coaches. Chan Gailey will continue to serve as offensive coordinator, Bob Bicknell will coach tight ends, Joe D’Alessandris will work as the assistant offensive line coach, Steve Hoffman will coach special teams, Bill Muir will be the offensive line coach, and Dedric Ward will serve as receivers coach.

JUDGE REFUSES TO REDUCE TRAVIS HENRY’S CHILD SUPPORT OBLIGATION

Posted by Mike Florio on February 19, 2009, 10:39 p.m. EST

Former NFL running back Travis Henry has nine kids. As to one of the children, Henry is required to pay $3,000 per month in child support.

Even though he no longer plays pro football and despite the fact that he’s facing federal cocaine charges, a judge in Georgia has refused to temporarily reduce Henry’s obligation.

While being questioned in court regarding his spending habits, Henry refused to get into specifics regarding multiple cash withdrawals of up to $70,000 since he was cut by the Broncos after the 2007 season. “All those big withdrawals have to do with my [criminal] case,” Henry said.

Henry also is seeking a permanent reduction of the support requirement, and he ultimately might prevail on that issue in front of a jury.

Meanwhile, Henry is under house arrest in Colorado while he awaits arraignment in his criminal case.

Hopefully, this means that he won’t be adding child number ten to the mix.

REDSKINS DUMP WASHINGTON

Posted by Mike Florio on February 20, 2009, 1:59 p.m. EST

Redskins coach Jim Zorn says that the team will be active in free agency.

They’ve created some cap room for the coming spending spree by cutting linebacker Marcus Washington, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

The move frees up $4.5 million in cap space — which will allow the team to make a big splash with another big name who’ll eventually be cut a few years from now to make room for the next big name with which they hope to make a big splash.

Washington, 31, instantly becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Meanwhile, the Redskins’ approach to free agency has yielded zero Super Bowl appearances and counting during the salary cap era.

I guess Oakland released Gibril Wilson. Nobody but their official site has said anything about it though.

REPORT: HARRISON NOT INTERESTED IN TAKING A PAY CUT

Posted by Mike Florio on February 22, 2009, 8:41 p.m. EST

Well, it looks like the term “Colt” will be relevant to Indy receiver Marvin Harrison’s future only if he fires a gun of that make.

Allegedly.

Per the AP, Harrison “probably would not be interested” cutting his salary from $9 million.

The Colts “probably would not be interested” in paying Harrison $9 million.

And so Harrison probably will be cut, and he probably will be signing with another team for a lot less than $9 million in 2009.

The Texans and Vikings are close to a trade that would send quarterback Sage Rosenfels to Minnesota, possibly for a fourth-round draft pick, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday.

RUMORS FLY THAT L.T. WON’T TAKE A REDUCED DEAL

Posted by Mike Florio on February 23, 2009, 2:37 p.m.

Though no specific reports have surfaced regarding the outcome of Sunday’s efforts to strike a new deal for Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, a league source tells us that there’s talk of Tomlinson refusing to reduce his current compensation level.

If true, this sets the stage for the Chargers and Tomlinson to part ways, either by a trade or by Tomlinson being released.

The problem, as the source explained it to us, is ego. With running back Darren Sproles certain to be paid $6.6 million for 2009, and likely to get a multi-year contract that averages close to that amount, Tomlinson won’t want to be making less than Sproles.

So even if another team wouldn’t pay Tomlinson as much as the Chargers would pay to keep him around, the thinking is that Tomlinson would be more willing to take less total dollars from another team than to suffer the perceived indignity of having to take a pay cut to stay put.

SOFT MARKET FOR HAYNESWORTH?

Posted by Mike Florio on February 23, 2009, 5:41 p.m. EST

Lately, we’ve been chirping the phrase “caveat emptor” whenever discussing Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. And it could be that some of the potential emptors are indeed, um, caveating.

According to Peter King of SI.com, there won’t be a long line of teams chasing Haynesworth come midnight on February 27.

As one unnamed coach told King, “Everybody I’ve asked this weekend says, ‘We’re out of that,’ or ‘I don’t think you’ll see us involved in Haynesworth.’”

The coach to whom King spoke also said that his team has some interest in getting Haynesworth “at the right price” — “which is about half of what Haynesworth is hoping to get.”

It’s believed that Haynesworth wants a $100 million contract, with more than $30 million of it guaranteed.

King says that the Redskins might in the end be the team that gets him, as evidenced by the fact that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was spotted having dinner with Haynesworth’s agent, Chad Speck, in Indy.

As we’ve said a few times lately, if neither the Titans (for whom Haynesworth has played all seven NFL seasons) nor the Lions (who are now coached by Haynesworth’s former defensive coordinator) make a serious play for the guy, it’s the strongest possible message that could be delivered to any team that toys with giving him huge money.

RAIDERS CUT KWAME

Posted by Mike Florio on February 23, 2009, 6:30 p.m. EST

As expected, the Oakland Raiders have jettisoned yet another free-agent acquisition from last year’s misguided spending spree.

Gone, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, is tackle Kwame Harris.

The move saves the team $7.2 million against the cap.

Also gone, per Schefter, is fullback Justin Griffith. The move creates another $1.1 million in cap space.

As Schefter reported over the weekend, the Raiders also are expected to cut receiver Javon Walker.

I'm doubting that Andre Smith is gonna get farther than #7 in this draft.

CHIEFS CHOP SURTAIN

Posted by Mike Florio on February 24, 2009, 5:27 p.m. EST

The Kansas City Chiefs, as expected, have parted ways with veteran cornerback Patrick Surtain.

The move, as reported by Adam Schefter of NFL Network, frees up $6.18 million in cap space.

Next up could be linebacker Donnie Edwards; cutting him would create $4.5 million in 2009 cap room.

Given the team’s existing cap surplus, new G.M. Scott Pioli will have plenty of money to spend, if he so chooses, when free agency launches.

I have a feeling Pioli will be a thorn in our side during FA. They need lots of help on D just like we do, and Pioli probably likes a lot of the same types of players McD likes. The "winner" will be backed by the owner more willing to spend/overpay...
