Frankly, this is just embarrassing. Cities that can't sell out home playoff games should lose their teams.......period.

The NFL has given the Vikings one last chance to sell out the Metrodome for tomorrow's playoff game against Philadelphia. The Vikings have until 4:30 p.m. today to sell the remaining 3,100 tickets to avoid a television blackout in local markets. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have sold enough tickets to today's game against Atlanta for it to be televised in the Phoenix area. The NFL gave the team two 24-hour extensions, the last expiring yesterday afternoon. About 2,400 tickets remained yesterday morning.

You may see this more and more if the economy continues to worsen.

People are bucking down and are realizing that they can save several hundred dollars and watch the game at home.

Eric Mangini, fired on Monday by the New York Jets, is emerging as the favorite to become the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, team and league sources said Saturday.

The Browns have continued their search process, interviewing other candidates, but sources say Mangini had a "compelling" interview and owner Randy Lerner is fascinated with him.

NEW YORK -- Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons has edged Tony Sparano of the Miami Dolphins by one vote Sunday for The Associated Press 2008 NFL Coach of the Year award.

Both coaches oversaw sensational turnarounds, leading their teams from last-place finishes in 2007 to playoff berths this year. Their achievements were reflected by the closeness of the balloting, with Smith getting 23½ votes and Sparano 22½ from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL.

The Patriots have decided to ensure that quarterback Matt Cassel won't be an unrestricted free agent, as scheduled in March.

Sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the Patriots will use a franchise tag on Cassel that will give the team two options: Trade him if all goes well with Tom Brady's rehabilitation from a knee injury or keep him because all is not well with Brady.

If that's true, the Pats will have zero room to make any decent sized splashes in FA because of the lack of cap room. Their defense was old and bad this season.....they'll be even older and even worse next year. Not good in a division that is quickly improving around you.

JAMES HARRISON WINS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Associated Press has announced the latest of its NFL postseason awards based on 50 votes, which apparently can be divided into a potentially infinite number of fractions.

Linebacker James Harrison of the Steelers is the 2008 defensive player of the year.

Harrison grabbed 22 of the 50 votes, nine more than Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

Ravens safety Ed Reed received eight votes, Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth got five, and Steelers safety Troy Polamalu finished with two.

Shut out was Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, despite having more sacks than Harrison, and playing in a defense that had lost Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor.

(Man, we can’t wait to hear Porter b**** about this one.)

For Harrison, the award caps the remarkable ascension of a guy who was cut three times by the Steelers and once by the Ravens.

Harrison also is the reigning two-time Steelers MVP, and he received three votes for league MVP.

The Green Bay Packers have cleaned house, releasing defensive coordinator Bob Sanders and five other assistant coaches.
Also let go Monday were: defensive ends coach Carl Hairston, defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn, secondary coach Kurt Schottenheimer, nickel package/cornerbacks coach Lionel Washington and strength and conditioning coordinator Rock Gullickson.
"These are difficult decisions," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. "I hold each of these men in high regard on a personal level, and I want to thank them for their service to the Green Bay Packers."
Assistant head coach/linebackers Winston Moss and defensive quality control coach Joe Whitt Jr. were the only defensive coaches to keep their jobs.

Chargers | Tomlinson could miss rest of playoffs

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports no one within the San Diego Chargers organization truly expects RB LaDainian Tomlinson (groin) to play in the team's playoff game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the team will not place Tomlinson on Injured Reserve, in the hope that he still could play in the postseason. The likelihood, according to sources, is that Tomlinson's severely strained groin will keep him out the rest of the postseason and will require surgery.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt confirmed Monday that Anquan Boldin's hamstring is strained.

Whiz admitted the injury was at least partially due to Boldin's two-week layoff before the Cards' Wild Card win. He strained the hamstring towards the end of a 71-yard touchdown Saturday and Boldin's status for the Divisional Round won't be known until late this week. Expect him to be a game-day decision.

The best thing about the most obvious, superficial analyses of NFL coaching connections is that, sometimes they’re accurate.

We suggested last night that former 49ers coach Mike Nolan could be the next defensive coordinator in Green Bay, due to the fact that Packers coach Mike McCarty worked as Nolan’s offensive coordinator in 2005.

A league source tells us that Nolan curently is in the process of lining up a staff of assistants, and the thinking is that Nolan will be the next defensive coordinator of the Packers.

The Packers announced on Monday the termination of defensive coordinator Bob Sanders and four defensive assistants.

REPORT: VINCENT JACKSON ARRESTED FOR DUI

We’ve been hearing rumblings all afternoon regarding rumors of Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson being arrested for suspicion of DUI.

Now, XTRA 1360 in San Diego is reporting, with confirmation from the authorties, that Jackson has indeed been arrested. (10News.com has a link, too.)

Jackson’s status for Sunday’s playoff game at Pittsburgh currently is unknown.

Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams do not have the authority to discipline players for alleged criminal conduct involving alcohol or substances of abuse. Instead, the league office has the exclusive ability to mete out punishment after the legal matter is resolved.

This hasn’t stopped teams from imposing discipline, however. During the 2008 season, the Steelers deactivated receiver Santonio Holmes for one game after he was cited for marijuana possession, and the Colts cut defensive tackle Ed Johnson after a similar offense.

With the Chargers likely to be without running back LaDainian Tomlinson (groin) for Sunday’s game, we’d be shocked if the team tries to take a stand on principle over this one — especially since doing so technically runs afoul of the league’s agreement with the union.

NO SURGERY FOR PALMER

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer won’t need surgery to repair his injured elbow. Palmer had an MRI near the end of the season, and Benglas PR director Jack Brennan said that it revealed that the healing process had started on its own.

“We did get back those late exam results that (Palmer) had made reference to, and the word is that — as Marvin had stated he expected — the results continue to indicate No. 9 will heal without surgery in time for full 2009 offseason work,” said Brennan.

Palmer injured his elbow during a September 21st loss to the Giants and last played on October 5th against the Cowboys. He began throwing a football in early December and should be ready to go when training camp begins this summer.
