Endorsement Tally -- Obama Widens Lead to 115-38

By Greg Mitchell and Dexter Hill

Published: October 20, 2008 11:50 AM ET updated Monday

NEW YORK (Updated Monday) The Obama-Biden ticket maintains its strong lead in the race for daily newspaper endorsements, by 115 to 38, a better than 3-1 margin, picking up 70 or more papers in the past three days, including (see separate stories), the Detroit Free Press, Buffalo News, Cleveland's Plain Dealer, Palm Beach (Fla.) Post, New York's Daily News, Miami Herald, Philadelphia Inquirer, Portland's The Oregonian, Denver Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Salt Lake Tribune, Kansas City Star, and Chicago Sun-Times.

In a real shocker, two solid Bush papers in 2004, the Houston Chronicle and Austin American-Statesman, also came out for Obama today. So did the more traditionally Democratic the News & Obsever in Raleigh and the Orlando Sentinel, both in key battleground states.

Obama's lopsided margin, including most of the major papers that have decided so far, is in stark contrast to John Kerry barely edging George W. Bush in endorsements in 2004 by 213 to 205.

We have also added up the circulation of the papers endorsing each candidate. Here Obama leads almost 4-1: 13.4 million to 3.7 million.

McCain did pick up a Texas nod from the San Antonio paper, plus a big one from the Columbus Dispatch in Ohio, as well as The San Diego Union-Tribune. All backed Bush in 2000 and 2004.

Note: We are updating this story and list often so return for additions.

The NY Daily News was yet another paper, now numbering at least 25, that backed George W. Bush in 2004 and now support Obama. The Long Beach (Ca.) Press-Telegram and Asbury Park (NJ) Press did the same. So did the San Gabriel Valley (Ca.) Tribune, Salt Lake Tribune, The Naples (Fla.) Daily-News, the New Haven (CT) Register, the Times-Reporter in New Philadelphia (Ohio), Las CRuces (NM) Sun-Newsm, Mason City (Iowa) Globe-Gazette and the Yakima Herald-Republic in Washington, among others. In addition, the Plain Dealer of Cleveland, which sat out the 2004 contest, endorsed Obama. McCain has picked up only one Kerry paper so far: The Daily Press of Newport News, Va.

Some of the other Sunday endorsements in no particular order:

For McCain: Las Vegas Review, Jackson (Miss.) Sun, Fargo (ND) Forum, Bakersfield (Ca.) Californian, Leaf-Chronicle of Clarksville, Tenn., The Daily Press of Hampton Roads, Va., several papers in Texas (Lubbock, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Longview, Wichita Falls).

For Obama: Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News, Salem (Ore.) Statesman-Journal, Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader, Idaho Statesman, Las Vegas Sun, Akron (Ohio) Beacon-Journal, Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal, Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune, The Olympian (Olympia, Wash.), Daily Breeze of Torrance, Ca., Rockford (Ill.) Register, Nashua (NH) Telegraph, Concord (NH) Monitor, Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune, Eugene (Ore.) Register-Guard, Daily Herald of Arlington, Ill, Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, Mid-Columbia Tri-City Herald.

Please send any endorsements you see or make to:
gmitchell@editorandpublisher.com.

Obama also yesterday gained the backing of two major weeklies: The New York Observer (NYC) and Willamette Week in Oregon.

Here is the latest chart of dailies which we are about to update for Sunday. As always, we include in brackets who the paper went with in 2004 with B=Bush and K=Kerry.

Newspaper endorsements really don't matter a whole lot. But there are some nutjobs out there who will folow the "recommendations" religiously.

Oh, wait. That's the Evangelists. Okay, follow them........somewhat.

FWIW I am endorsing the only man in the race who has truely fought for you.

Or something like that. I see the Gunny paper is on the wrong side of the aisle. Trying to get the hippys on the north end of the valley to buy subscriptions is my guess.

See this: , or this: . Use them, it helps loosen up the situation.

I'll loosen up in about 20 minutes. Chasing all my employees off the job and heading to the seafood shop to grab a bunch of Clams.

Mississippi Mud and steamed clams with a side of butter and hot sauce at game time.
