No trade indicates receiver Royal ready to return
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 10/15/2008 12:10:20 AM MDT

As the NFL trading deadline passed Tuesday afternoon, the Broncos were confident they had picked up a quality receiver.

The receiver: Eddie Royal.

All signs of Denver's inactivity Tuesday indicate they are planning for Royal to return from his ankle injury to play Monday night against the New England Patriots. The Broncos did not swing a deal before the deadline Tuesday, as the Dallas Cowboys did by surrendering a whopping three draft picks for Roy Williams, nor did they sign a free agent.

"I want to get out there as soon as possible," Royal said. "When you're out there watching on the sidelines, you want to be out there, in the huddles going to battle with them."

Even with missing last week's game, Royal continues to lead

rookie receivers with 30 catches and two touchdowns. If Royal stays down another week to heal an ankle that left him hobbling on crutches after the Tampa Bay game nine days ago, the Broncos would bring a dangerously thin receiving corps to New England.
Slot receiver Brandon Stokley will be questionable with a concussion, and veteran wideout Darrell Jackson is playing but not fully recovered from a strained calf that sidelined him four games.

That leaves No. 1 receiver Brandon Marshall and Glenn Martinez, who was signed off the street two weeks ago, as the Broncos' only healthy receivers.

Lynch update.

Veteran safety John Lynch is the only player who played for both the Broncos and the Patriots during training camp. By the start of the regular season, he was with neither. Lynch had the choice to stay with both teams but declined. He felt the Broncos were phasing him out and said the Patriots were going to keep him on their 53-man roster but probably on their game-day inactive list early in the season.

"I'm not retired," Lynch said. "I'm staying in shape. I'm ready if a team calls. But having said that, if I've played my final game, I'm content with the career I've had and what I was able to accomplish."

Tryouts.

The Broncos worked out several running backs and receivers Tuesday with the idea of possibly signing one in the future. Two of the more familiar names were running back Vernand Morency and receiver Chad Jackson. Morency was Houston's third-round pick in 2005, and Jackson was New England's second- round pick in 2006.

I would say Chad Jackson could be a decent pickup. You cannot say it's because his QB was bad, because Brady wasn't.

Sorry, John... we don't need you. We have some guy we pulled out of a lumber yard and threw some pads on.

Morency would be a pretty good pickup, I think.

no trade doesn't indicate Royal is ok. No trade indicates Denver wasn't desperate to unload a 1st, 3rd, and 6th round pick to get another receiver.

I'm telling you, Martinez is a competent #2 or #3 guy. The guy catches every ball that comes his way and may be our best kick returner. I'll guarantee you Shanahan isn't worried about it in the slightest. Yes, we need Royal... but we're lucky to have a fill-in like Martinez.

I'm with you on this one. The guy's not flashy, and seems lanky to me, but he takes care of business. That catch against the Jags was an example of determination.

Martinez is ok as a WR and decent in the return game.

But there's no way he should be starting. He has a limited set of patterns he can run because he can't box out defenders and doesn't win 50-50 contested balls.

With a guy like Cutler who likes to fire it in, we need strong WRs who can either get open cleanly because they run great routes (Royal, Stokely) or physically imposing guys like Marshall/Scheff who can consistently fend of defenders and win the ball in the air.

Is Klis trying to say because our 2nd round, #2 WR hurt his ankle and was out 1-2 games, we should've unloaded a 1st, 3rd, and 6th in the Roy Williams running?

This article is dumb. Anyone we could've traded for would've been a zero impact player considering he wouldn't have been able to learn the plays/system by the time Eddie came back to the line up, regardless.

One big problem with Glenn though, No Separation! You're right, he does a good job catching most everything that is thrown his way but he makes it difficult for the QB b/c the room for error is so small with him. Brandon and Jay's timing cover up this issue and Eddie and Stoke can get separation on just about anyone.

I am not apposed to bringing Jackson in and Morency was someone I thought would be really good for our system out of college. I still think that eventually Royal will be our slot machine (think wes welker of last season) with someone else as the #2 but if Stokley could stay healthy I dont mind Eddie at the #2 spot I just think he would be better utilized out of the slot.

True, and I think Martinez' route-running is just average. But, he's a capable fill-in, certainly good enough that we don't need to go signing guys or making trades.

He's not a world beater, but Martinez knows or at least should know the plays.
