Default McCain sat on board of racist, anti-Semitic group

NBC's Tom Brokaw talked to Paul Begala about how the McCain campaign is attacking Barack Obama's association with William Ayers, who was a member of the Weather Underground.

Brokaw played a clip of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin criticizing Obama's connection to Ayers by referencing a New York Times article published on the subject.

"It turns out one of his earlier supporters is a man who, according to The New York Times, is a domestic terrorist," Palin said.

After pointing out that Obama was eight years old when Ayers' planned the attacks, Begala believes "guilt by association" attacks are dangerous territory for McCain.

Begala said, "This guilt by association path is going to be trouble ultimately for the McCain campaign. You can go back -- I have written a book about the candidate. A dozen researchers go through him. I didn't even put this in the book. John McCain sat on a board.

"It was the U.S. Council for World Freedom. It was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub who wound up involved in the Iran Contra scandal. It was an ultra conservative right-wing group.

"The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981 when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League, the parent organization which ADL said had increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racist and anti-Semites."

This video is from NBC's Meet the Press, broadcast October 5, 2008.

McCain tied to radical anti-semitic, racist organization

I wish I could say I was surprised by this, but let face it: there were signs. There was John McCain's long opposition to a national holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr., his use of racial epithets, his love of racist jokes, and the increasingly racist tone of his campaign.

It seems that John McCain was a member and sat on the board of the US Council for World Freedom ("USCWF"), an organization noted for its extreme ideology, racism, and anti-semitism. This organization has been described as "largely a collection of Nazis, fascists, anti-Semites, sellers of forgeries, vicious racialists, and corrupt self seekers." Why on earth would John McCain associate himself with such a group? Why would he take a leadership position with it?

McCain's connection to the group became news when Paul Begala mentioned it on Meet the Press:
This guilt by association path is going to be trouble ultimately for the McCain campaign. You know, you can go back—I’ve written a book about McCain. I had a dozen researchers go through him. I didn’t even put this in the book. But John McCain sat on the board of a very right-wing organization. It was the U.S. Council for World Freedom. It was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub, who wound up involved in the Iran-Contra scandal. It was an ultraconservative right-wing group. The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981, when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League, the parent organization, which ADL said, "has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and Anti-Semites."
Watch the video:

John McCain's membership in this group goes a long way towards explaining why his brother Joe McCain goes around referring to everything he doesn't agree with as "communist." In the eyes of this group Jews, Blacks and Communists are all pretty much the same thing.

I don't see how anyone who calls themself a friend of Israel could be involved in any way with such an organization, let alone sit on its board and coordinate its activities. When it comes to racism and anti-semitism, John McCain has a lot of explaining to do.

I am afraid its true, he is not a communist... soon, that may be grounds for Big Brother taking all you have and giving it to pay the debt in California and bloated programs -- as that is what would be fair to those in Montana.

I have a serious question -- what is the connection with this domestic terrorist and Obama -- so he served on some boards with a whack job? I dont think that is a big deal... What campain did Obama launch at this whack job's house? Was it his presidential bid, or his run for the Ill legislature? If this latter part is true, a tad surprised that it was not exposed when Hilary was running (before He became The Chosen One.)

What happened was when Ill outgoing senator decided Obama was going to be the replacement they held a meet and greet. The meeting took place with all of Chicagos liberal elite and took place at the terrorists home. Where they all sat down and had dinner together and gave Obama there stamp of approval.

This actually isn't all the associations that John McCain does not want to come to light. He is all over the map with this kind of stuff but the real problem isn't his associations so much as his complete lack of ideas and real character flaws.

Just because Bush was one doesn't mean Obama won't be. Cmon that's not logical. I agree though Bush has been a bad President. There I said it.

So go vote for the most extreme liberal in the senate and consider yourself a bad man.

McCain sitting on this racist board is shocking. His black child must be a beard.

Are those mutually exclusive choices, or can there be a (wink) compromise on that? I'll have to get back to you on that, you betcha....

The problems that this country is dealing with is so severe that all talk of leftist politics, in my opinion, is absolutely stupid.

Let me simplify things. George Bush has poisoned this country. Once you bankrupt a country there are only a few things you can potentially do to fix it. This whole bailout was a criminal ruse where the entire direction of this country was hijacked and no matter what Obama wants to do the problems ahead will dictate the solutions.

If Obama really wanted to screw this country he would quit campaigning and say "My bad!" Pass out a few fist bumps and leave this pile of crap to The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and see just how far this ship sails.

What part of the article did you miss, the whole thing?

Sounds like a potpourri of McCarthyism, Ku Klux Klan, and John Birch Society. This would explain his lack of respect for Obama during the debate. I'm wondering if he'll try to clean this up in tomorrow's debate. Nothing funnier, or sadder, than a bigot trying to act like he's not.

No more shocking than those gay republicans who work to deny rights to gays.

Not surprising that this is a huge issue for you, poopsie. This is the issue that all the others revolve around for you, right? Certainly explains your Palin-phobe.

Also Obama came out and said Jerusalem will never be divided and will always be the Jewish capital. That right there should be all the Jewish people need to hear.

Throw in a little McCain is an anti-semite and you're right Obama might be onto a good smear job.

The fact Obama can get dirty makes me more comfortable with him being President. Men like Carter get eaten alive. We really do need a President that isn't above getting dirty.

"Smear job" would imply that the charges are false.

Such is not the case here.

Playing the "guilt by association" game could get really expensive for McCraven.

Having a minority child doesn't mean or make you not a bigot. I have 6 minority children and find myself often condemning and most judgmental against the rest of that race.

I think he's probably already lost so it won't matter. Especially here in our state, no way McCain takes California.
