Default Old lady who shot herself is given back house

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/03/evi...l?iref=topnews

(CNN) -- Fannie Mae said it will set aside the loan of a woman who shot herself as sheriff's deputies tried to evict her from her foreclosed home.
Fannie Mae foreclosed on the Akron, Ohio, home of Addie Polk, 90, after acquiring the mortgage in 2007.

Fannie Mae foreclosed on the Akron, Ohio, home of Addie Polk, 90, after acquiring the mortgage in 2007.

Addie Polk, 90, of Akron, Ohio, became a symbol of the nation's home mortgage crisis when she was hospitalized after shooting herself at least twice in the upper body Wednesday afternoon.

On Friday, Fannie Mae spokesman Brian Faith said the mortgage association had decided to halt action against Polk and sign the property "outright" to her.

"We're going to forgive whatever outstanding balance she had on the loan and give her the house," Faith said. "Given the circumstances, we think it's appropriate."

Residents of Akron have rallied behind Polk, who is being treated at Akron General Medical Center. She was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon, according to Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville.

See sometimes the little person get's a break. You have to shoot yourself first but just don't be a good shot.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that ammo sales have jumped in poorer neighborhoods across the country...

They could have saved her the pain and been reasonable from the start.
There are always exceptions and a 90 year old woman should have qualified as one.

But then they would fail to teach us regular folks appropriate free market discipline.

If there was fraud involved and some material misrepresentation made about whether she would be able to afford the house, that would be a fine exception, but not just because she's elderly and/or poor. It's an irrelevant factor.

Yet the mortgage company went above and beyond and gave her the house.
I would have suggested simply finding a way to help her with payments rather than add another senior to the roles of the homeless.

Ofcourse the mortgage company gave her the house. It was well played by that old lady. She was willing to risk her life on the (smart) assumption that where the PR case goes, everything else will follow.

It's still not something I approve of or like or think is justified. It was a poor decision. It's not rational. If she was lied to, or conned into this mortgage, then she should have the home in order to disincentivize this kind of conduct, because the company would have moral blame and because it would save the taxpayers in the long run by cutting down on this conduct. But if that isnt the case, we don't bail someone out just because it would be "sad" or add more to the homeless. If the opposite was true, then we would have to bail out virtually everyone who couldnt pay because they would also be added to the ranks of the homeless.

Housing, feeding and caring for that 90 year old would cost the taxpayers, it's always cheaper to find a more practical and charitable course.
Which is why I ask if you do any work for the homeless.
You've answered the question in a round-about way.

Actually I have helped those less fortunate (including the homeless), although its not relevant to this discussion.

Then you should know that it's cheaper and more desirable to keep the elderly in their homes if homelessness is the alternative.
If you have 'worked' with the homeless, you'd know that simple truth.

Sorry, but how the hell did a 90 year old woman get qualified for a multi-decade mortgage in the first place?
