McCain Minus Palin Equals Smaller Crowds Elizabeth Holmes reports from Jacksonville, Fla. on the presidential race. John McCain began Monday with his first solo rally since he named his running mate on Aug. 29–and there was plenty of room to spare. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, it seems, took the crowds with her. Roughly three quarters of the 16,000-seat Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena was empty when McCain took the stage with his wife, Cindy. The empty spots were littered with dozens of signs prepared in advance–the hand-painted ones meant to look like supporter-made signs but were actually made by campaign staffers. Among the discarded, untouched signs: “We (heart) Todd” and “The Winning Team McCain Palin.” To be sure, the unofficial crowd estimate of 3,500 is much larger than many of the events McCain held over the summer. But it is a far cry from the more than 15,000 that have shown up at joint McCain-Palin appearances both before and after the Republican National Convention. The campaign contained the attendees to key spots within the view of the cameras. They encouraged folks to stand on the hockey rink around the stage and seated others strategically in front of and behind the podium. Despite the early, humid Monday morning, the crowd was energetic. While waiting for the senator, the audience—led by cheerleaders with pom-poms in hand—chanted “Sarah Palin!” and “Country First!” At one point, they attempted “the wave.” A line of young men painted their chests with white paint spelling out “McCain” and “Palin.” On stage, McCain repeated much of the introduction he usually gives to Palin and her husband, Todd–despite their absence. To applause, McCain proclaimed he couldn’t wait to introduce Palin to Washington. He also bragged about the snow-mobile accomplishments of Todd Palin. McCain had plenty friends to surrounding him, including Florida Sen. Mel Martinez and a pair of former Sunshine State governors: Bob Martinez and Jeb Bush. McCain won’t be without his running mate for long. The pair have a four scheduled appearances together this week, beginning in Ohio on Tuesday. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/0...maller-crowds/ |

The CLUELESS ONE speaks and what is really mindboggling is that the idiots attending his "rally" applaud after that comment. It would be ok if he just made the statement, but for the crowd to essentially agree is SCARY! |
